So, I requested a beta code last week from my work email in hopes of getting one. I then went out of town on Friday. I come in to work this morning to find one waiting for me in my mailbox. WEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will inform you all of my thoughts after I get it downloaded tonight.

For those with it already, how big is the download?

If I remember correctly it's 960MB, and even though it's a chame that the beta is almost over, they'll launch a demo a week before release.

There won't be a demo, IIRC.

btw, proof LBP is the real deal.

Can't watch You Tube at work. It's not blocked, they have just begun cracking down on bandwidth usage.

But I have all the proof I need in the beta. I've just done the tutorial levels so far and am having a blast.

My only issue is that every time I complete a level it says Score Upload Failed. I see other scores, so I know it must be working. But my Internet was acting weird last night. The first half of the game download went by in about 20-30 minutes, but it took two and a half hours to get the other half. And D-N messaged me to ask if my PSN crashed about the time the slow down happened. So, I don't know if it was me or something weird on Sony's end.

I'll try rebooting my modem and router before playing again tonight. I also got an error the first time I attempted to download it, which seems to happen to me on occasion when accessing the PSN Store. A quick reboot of the PS3 remedies that though.

Is the beta closed already? How could i sign up?
I got a key last Thursday from the PlayStation Blog. I was refreshing it expecting to see a Store Update at any moment when a post popped up showing the second "Life in LittleBigPlanet" mockumentary (and here we see two sackpeople making "Love" )and at the bottom it said that he was also sitting on a stack of of beta keys for anyone who emailed them, first come, first serve. I had an email sent within 4 minutes of the post going up. It updated 30 minutes later saying that they had too many emails already and asked people to stop.

I think all the keys are out, considering the beta ends this weekend.

I saw some good stuff on YouTube at the weekend, but that is....

I just know that I am going to be too lazy/inept to make anything even remotely decent - praise be to the internetz for letting me download other people's stuff :D

I am tempted to pre-order on Amazon right now, but will it be available via PSN, and is it likely to be any cheaper?

One thing is for sure, it is now top of my shopping list

And you can heart the levels you like so it is easier to pick out the good ones by their heart rating. It shows you teh number of hearts it has received and the number of total players.

If you pre-order check out the pre-order bonuses. If you get it from certain places you get different things. There is a Kratos in-game skin, Nariko in-game skin, burlap BD holder sack, sticker book, and level creation guide.

No, it won't be on PSN. It will supposedly fill a Blu-Ray. And the online multiplayer level creator is coming later in an update.

After just playing it for a little bit last night after watching Heroes I can say that is a good place to put it.

It has the charm of Mario, Sonic, Crash, etc as a platformer. You can make your sackboy emote with button presses, so it has even more charm. It will lip-synch to your voice communications or you can text chat. Shaking the controller will make him dance.

This is definitely an awesome game from a technical standpoint. I haven't gotten in-depth enough to judge it fully yet.

👍 Thanks, FK. It certainly sounds like it is living up to the expectations. I am hoping that it will justify me bringing my PS3 home for Xmas and playing it with the family - although my nephew will be a bit too young for it yet (6 months :P ), he should be good to go in a couple of years time! And who knows, GT5 might even be out by then too :D

I will shop around, since I usually just order from Amazon without looking elsewhere... there is a specialist gaming store just down the road from me, so I might see what they have in the way of extra goodies if I pre-order it from them...

 Blimey heck...

I'd say it's more of a problem at Sony's end because hat happens to me quite commonly, the weird thing is that if I play on multuplayer it does upload the the score.

If you pre-order from gamestop you get the kratos, medusa and minotaur sackboy plus a GoW inspired level. at Best Buy you can get the nariko sackgirl costume.

All the games i've seen so far that are available on blu-ray as well as in the PSN are no cheaper anyway. I think Warhawk was only cheaper in the PSN because the blu-ray came with a headset.

Now you're just being optimistic.

And if you do preorder they have two special Week 1 only costumes for the launch. One is a Spacesuit (for launch, they say pun intended) and a I was there Week 1 T-shirt.

Ok guys,

With about two weeks left until the big launch, we wanted to finalize the info for pre-orders and sum it up for you in one nice neat package...

First off, the main reason you want to pre-order is to make sure you're online with us for the free, limited edition, week one only, 'I was there for Launch' SpaceSuit SackBoy costume. This is a fair and final warning - we don't want to see any sob stories on our News Site / Forums, and we promise not to give you the "I told you so" line (but we'll be thinking it on every post) :)

Secondly, with so many great pre-order items from our retail partners, why wouldn't you pre-order to bet bonus stuff.

From stickers, pouches, strategy guides, and in-game costumes, there is something for everyone. Please feel free to visit our retailer sites to get more details...

Also, it appears that you can get Kratos just by picking up a copy of OPM UK with the LBP cover, so you can preorder from wherever you want if Kratos is your desire.
http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/09/09/kratos-sackboy-for-littlebigplanet-in-next-issue-of-opm-uk/
The cover of the Official PlayStation Magazine in the United Kingdom pretty much explains it all -- the next issue of the publication will include a card with the code for the highly-desired Kratos Sackboy costume for LittleBigPlanet. Looking for Nariko instead? She's over here.

Additionally, "the first 50 subscribers to the magazine will also be sent an exclusive Sackboy plush toy." We are not sure exactly what this means, but we are assuming 50 new subscribers to OPM starting ... now? Anyhow, issue number 24 will on sale on September 30th. We have a feeling this issue will sell out quick!
I can't find the other info for Europe as it is convoluted. Apparently with so many different countries involved it is a mess and you just have to check retailers.

 Blimey heck...
That's what I said when I saw this.
http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/09/10/littlebigplanet-takes-a-big-amount-of-space-up-to-40gb/
Although Sony never introduced it as such, many assumed the Network-friendly LittleBigPlanet would be a downloadable game. That notion is impossible, it appears, as a new interview with GI.biz reveals otherwise. Media Molecule's Alex Evans says that "a dual layer is 40GB, but we're filling up the Blu-ray. One of the things on there is we're having a lot of tutorial content - basically there are two paths through the game, the player's route and the creator's route."

The tutorial content will be extensive in LittleBigPlanet. "We're filling the Blu-ray up with is tutorials, and a lot of video stuff showing exactly how it's done, it's narrated by Stephen Fry and so on. It's really useful that thanks to Blu-ray we haven't needed to worry about file size, it's never crossed my mind." However, this doesn't mean the game will be bloated when sharing levels and creations on the web: "The game itself and the levels you produce are relatively compact."
After posting that I should add that having the voice of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy narrating is immensely awesome. I keep waiting for him to tell me, "Don't Panic" and that LittleBigPlanet is "Mostly Harmless." He even voices the intro video, which is kinda cool so I won't give the details away and spoil it, but it explains what LittleBigPlanet is and where it comes from. This has a very Hitchhiker's Guide feel to it because he uses his Guide voice and tone. The best part in one of the tutorials is the line, "We would like to tell you that no Sackboys are harmed in this, but......"

I'd say it's more of a problem at Sony's end because hat happens to me quite commonly, the weird thing is that if I play on multiplayer it does upload the the score.
That makes me feel better.

Gamespot or GameStop?

Yeah, I think it is the same reason why you can't buy HD movies in the video store: After all the fuss with the HD format war Sony doesn't want to hurt its proprietary HD disc format. Imagine buying HD movies online and DLing any game possible, if you are willing to wait for the 25-50GB download (the store is quicker for me), then they wouldn't be able to tout the BD sales rate as being equal to DVDs in the same amount of time. That and our hard drives would be full after one game.

It's fine with me though, as I prefer a disc.

Well, I got an e-mail this morning saying I recieved a beta code from the playstation underground.

Must....Buy.....

From,
Chris.

Guys, I think I've been cheating on LBP with CoD:World at War. I think I might actually cancel my pre-order for LBP and pre-order CoD. I mean, I freakin' wanna play LBP so much but almost all of my friends are getting CoD and I want to play with them and get my moneys worth. You know. I don't get $60 easily so I want to pay for something I will play A LOT and that I will enjoy. :(

I still want LBP though. I don't know what to do. :(

You should be able to wait a couple weeks and pick up one or the other used. GameStop runs 20% off coupons all the time on used games so you should be able to get a used copy of one of the games fairly reasonable. I think there will be more copies of LBP used then CoD though, mainly because I think people will get LBP not really know what it is and not really care for it, whereas CoD you know exactly what you are going to get.

UGH.

Wait and rent both, then see where you stand. CoD: World at War looks like a crime against humanity. TERRIBLE. But, I'd say rent and see what you like.

Its call of duty four, set in world war II era. The vids look good. The multiplayer is layed out just like CoD4, How could it be that bad?

Found out about this game about an hour ago (late to the party I know). Totally pre-ordered. :)

For those who have the beta how is creating levels with the controller? I've always had an issue doing anything similar to that with a controller on any system. Would it be easier to use a mouse and keyboard?

Is anyone else tired of fighting their grandfather's war? I understand that WWII had a fairly clean cut line drawn between good guys and bad guys and anything modern creates issues with political correctness and/or PR, but I have been killing Germans since the FPS genre was invented. And if it isn't Germans it is zombies (or similar) or aliens.

I prefer the idea of an alternate, non-science fictioned, reality. If Ace Combat can create fake wars with fake countries why can't a good FPS?

Welcome to April, 2007. :sly:

It depends on what you are trying to do. You can take pre-made objects and just put them in place, which is simple enough with a controller. It is side scrolling so the only real 3-D element is thickness of things and which depth plane it is on (there are three).

Now, if you are attempting to create something from scratch then you need to put forth some effort. You have plenty of tools, but when shaping I do think a mouse would be helpful. However, I cannot draw a straight line, so using large objects with pre-defined edges to cut and shape others works best for me.

I only played with creation a bit last night though. I think with some work I can get much better. Last night I did manage to build a working car. Granted it looked like a screwed up classic F1 car, but it worked and only ran when my Sackboy grabbed onto the front of the cockpit to start it. When I let go it stopped. Then I built a ramp and jumped it. I should probably use something other than bottle caps for wheels though.

To fully answer your question though I think it works fine for not using a mouse and keyboard. Some of the creations I have seen so far look and work well. With a wider variety of objects and shapes (the beta is limited) I think it will work even better. If you are used to using some kind of CAD program you will probably feel it is dumbed down, but for your average everyday person I think this is extremely well set up.

I have an idea for a level that I want to try out tonight, so once I do that I will have a better insight. I can say this though, the required tutorials can teach an idiot to do it. Ability will not be what holds people back. Creativity is.

I have a bit of a CAD background but not so much where I'm an expert in it. Do you think Sony will allow mouse and keyboard integration with the game?

I doubt it. While a mouse will make minor details easier there really is no need for a keyboard that I can see. It would be like using a keyboard in MS Paint. But I guess if they did a mouse/keyboard setup they could map the undo and pause functions to the keyboard.

Let me put it like this, as it is my only PC creation experience: I had an easier time with this creator than I do with any of my PC-based rollercoaster sims. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that it is not full 3-D (2.5-D?) functionality. You can make objects thick or thin and move them between background and foreground, but there is not much need for details on the Z-axis.

Alright, that doesn't sound to bad then. I'll guess I'll just have to rent LBP and see if I like it.

Well, just remember, if you never touch the creation mode there are supposed to be something like 150 developer created levels. So it should be a fairly full-sized platformer on its own.
