Well, GB was never going to win the football. They're awful at it and their players always have over-inflated opinions of their skills (my opinion).

So I was quite happy that they lost anyway.

This. None of our players ever seem to be able to follow through with the hype and they often don't deserve to win. The save from the Korean keeper was pretty good anyway.

Oh my.

Penalties did them in AGAIN! Saddened for my British friends and the great posters here on gtp.

I wouldn't bother being sad about us losing on penalties as it always happens

They said that today was going to be 'super saturday'..how right they were!! its been an INCREDIBLE day!!!!

Tomorrow then its Andy Murray in the mens tennis final and the 100m final!!

Nght night everyone!!

Don't forget Murray and Robson in the mixed doubles final too...

Was looking at the track finals list today and saw "Men's 20km Walk." At first, I was really confused. Then I looked it up on YouTube, and it looks like he really has to go #2 but has to finish the race.

As soon as it went to penalties then I knew that we had lost. If anyone wants revenge however you could always frame their keeper as a peado. Imagine the headlines in the papers "peadophile Bumyoung".

Sorry, I'm 16 so once I saw that name on the back of his shirt I had to make a joke.

The Korean keeper was a sub. So more kudos for him for saving it!

However, other sports are FAR more successful with FAR less sponsorships from adverts and the like that the football get in this country. If the track and field or the cycling/swimming/rowing got even a 10th or a 5th of the sponsorship that the whole football sport get in this country, it would totally guarantee medal positions for the next 12 years, at least in terms of the back up and so on.

Its just insane at the waste of money (I see it as) that is thrown at football for VERY little in return.

Tbe presentation for Jessica Ennis was beautiful, just beautiful  A well deserved gold medal.

Almost makes me want to train for Olympics just to meet her.

Also I saw Shelly-Ann Fraser win the 100m, WOOOOOOPP!!?! Go Jamaica!! (My mum's Jamaican)

I couldn't agree more even though I am football fan. The amount of money wasted on the so called premier league is ridiculous. The gulf between the lower league teams and premier league is getting bigger all the time. I support my hometown team and our highest trsnsfer fee paid is less than half a million pounds. The wages they are paid for so little work is crazy. I work full time and don't even earn half of what Tal Ben Haim earns in a week yet his club Portsmouth are about to go bust.

My sport is swimming and its just insane the gulf in sponsorship between football and swimming. Mark Foster was a 6 time World Champion for 50 metres freestyle. So even though he was rather successful (as successful as Usain Bolt for sprinting, for example) he was an unknown to the normal public just because it wasn't advertised or the public saw it as "boring".

There was a British breaststroker swimmer who moved to New Zealand just because New Zealand could guarantee her a steady consistent cashflow for her training cost and living cost. Before she did that, she had to actually achieve world record times for 50 metres breaststroke all the time and 100 breaststrokes as well. Its insane when competitors just HAVE to do that because it devalues the world record times itself. It should become special, not an expected thing to achieve a "pay day".

With football, its insanely out of control. There needs to be a stricter payment and performance related pay for the game itself. Its just stupid.

Football is the biggest sport in the world, therefore it attracts the most money.

Deal with it and stop trolling what has been a very good day for GB.

Not trolling.

I could actually present facts that it isn't the biggest sport in the world.

Running would be the biggest sport, because that doesn't involve other people to make the game of football work.

Jess, Greg, Mo. You make me proud to be British tonight very well done!

HOWEVER... the football made a dent that frankly was to be expected, and I don't think the men's team deserve any form of sympathy for loosing. The women's on the other hand I respect 👍

Athletics may not be the most covered sport but it does attract quite a lot of money for those at the pinnacle of the sport.

Yes, I train for athletics; a young kid with raw talent and a dream.

Seriously though, being at the pinnacle of track & field disciplines means that brands will want to have you as their ambassador because of the masses and what appeals to them.

If you want to include £, €, and $'s spent in the discussion, then tevision ratings are automatically a factor.

FIFA (and Reuters, just read three stories) list the worldwide viewing audiences for the last to World Cup Finals at 700 million people - each.

You would have to add up total viewers for how many running events to get to that figure? 5, 10, 25? More?

I think the name of the football shows how much the organisers were bothered about it as a sport for the games:

-The Albert

I don't know, but Olympics (not athletics in general) probably attracts more viewers than the FIFA world cup because absolutely every part of the world is involved, and because a number of sports are involved.

As for athletics on its own, sadly I have to admit I don't think it receives as much attention as football does.

Hey everybody, Bolt is looking for another gold medal tomorrow :)

If Yohan Blake wins I won't be too disappointed because he's Jamaican too 👍

I want to see Gemili do well, it's good to see a brit representing us in the sprints :) hopefully one day that will be me...

All the other ones are named

Volleyball
Tennis Ball
Handball
Shot
Table Tennis Ball

A name like The Albert is actually quite something in comparison.

Incorrect.

The World Cup Finals have outdrawn the Opening Ceremonies (which is by far the most watched part of the games) ... and has outdrawn that event for years and years - every time.

If you want to compare total viewiership of the Olympics to one football match, then I find that a bit silly. In the United States - Thousands of hours of Olympics are televised for example

It would be a bit like adding up the viewers for 300 episodes of The Young Ones and then coparing it to one episode of Seinfeld.

Hype? What hype? GB weren't tipped to even get out of the group.

Didn't then non-league Crawley recently spend over a million pounds on a player?

Whilst I do agree they are paid too much, what can anyone do? Supply and demand.

Don't know about that. I'm sure more people will be watching the CL final or WC final than they would the World Championships. Admittedly, the 100m final will have a massive audience but how many of those would consider themselves running fans.

Why not ? Penalties is pot luck and I think the team performed to expectations. Sturridge was visibly upset at the end, it's not like they just shrugged it off like some players from other teams, *cough* Cavani *cough*.

Obviously they lost, they didn't have Rooney. :sly:

1. I said I didn't know
2. A number of us aren't American and have no clue what "the Young Ones" or "Seinfield" are.
3. Where are your figures that you base your statements off?
4. Why are we so off-topic with this?

Ben Ainslie should be interesting tomorrow :P

BTW has anybody found Idowu yet???

Serena Williams is a beast! If Federer wins, then both Olympic good medalists won Wimbledon.

I absoultely love the story of the last few month of Mens and Womens tennis.

How about that! The two greatest players on the men and womens side to ever play the game after being down and out against all the youngs players! To be 30 and 31 and be the dominant players in there game. They were meant to rule the courts together. They did it in the past and they returned. I love how the commentators try to talk up Serena's opponents. Before the Sharapova match people were saying that this was a toss up. 3 setter. Tight sets. Well. Serena clearly wasn't listening. She was just thinking "Die Blondie Die!"

Roger has little respect for Murray so I suspect he take it in 2. Not serena style but maybe 7-5 7-5/

1. That's why I gave you the correct information
2. Young Ones is decidedly English, and a great show
3. Fifa.com and Reuters, as I stated. If anyone likes, they can look here to read how nearly half the planet watched World Cup 2010 and then compare that to running races? Ludicrous.

http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/archive/southafrica2010/organisation/media/newsid=1473143/index.html

4. It began with posts about how too much money is spent on football in your country (but it seems revenue was decidedly ingnored in my opinion) and continued from there. A GB loss today, leading to football discussion, expectations placed on the squad and the sport in general in the self proclaimed (and rightly so in my opinion) "Home of Football" is not off topic at all.

Noticed that when one of my friends bought the ball.
