Just saw some live footage from Kesennuma City... it wasn't clear, and I couldn't make out the scale, but it looked quite unbelievable... fires everywhere, and if it was on the scale that it looked like, it's like nothing I've ever seen before :nervous:

This seems like things are getting worse, but I pray for the not...

My thoughts are with the victims :(

Seriously? Is that necessary?People have died and more will die before this is over and you're trying to make jokes?Wow,just wow.

It was a mere question. My sympathy goes out to those involved and affected but msnbc thought it necessary to show this image on their front page to lend images to the horror we are all hearing about.

Just because i didn't express my sympathy in a forum doesn't mean I am joking.

Apologies. Just curious.

Low lying island nations in the south Pacific such as Tuvalu might be affected by the impending wave. Places like this are barely 4 metres above sea level, so a wave could cause substantial damage. There are very few places for people to get away from it if a wave does end up hitting these islands.

Also, there are large fires raging in Miyagi Prefecture.

Yes, there was the great quake back in the '20's that wiped out Tokyo mainly due to the subsequent fires.

I would like to hear more news about the nuclear issues than anything else right now to be honest, really frightening.

EDIT:
#
1528: An update now on the nuclear power station in Japan at the centre of a huge evacuation order: Officials have said the reactor cooling system that failed after the quake at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant is expected to return to normal soon, according to the Jiji Press news agency. Thousands of residents were evacuated as a precaution.

Crazy stuff... news is saying now that the coolers on a nuclear plant broke from the tsunami and if they dont get restored in time the fuel could melt.. don't know how credible it is this early but.. damn. :S

This is terrible!

I really hope they get that under control as that is a far bigger threat in the long run.

Just one question: Has Tokio been hit by the tsunami?

No, and hasn't been hit by the earthquake either. The earthquake was at Miyagi but since japan is kinda small, all of japan could feel it.
My girlfriend's mom just went back to Japan and we're hoping to hear from her tonight. She's in Kagoshima so she should be fine. They have a lot of family and friends in Tokyo so I hope they're all OK.

If it would melt down we would have a catastrophe similar to Chernobyl.
See the INES what all of that stuff means: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Nuclear_Event_Scale

EDIT: Or here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_meltdown

But look at what I posted above, seems like they gained control and can cool it down again.

The video footage showing dozens of houses being swept away in Ofunato is extraordinary, the sheer scale of this disaster just continues to rise. At least there's some relatively good news concerning the Fukushima Daiichi Power Station, hopefully they will regain control of it.

Is Kaz ok? i know that PD is in Tokyo, but was Kaz there? theres any report?

Several game makers have reported to be ok, like Kojima and the guy from Suda.

We had a 8.9 earthquake here in Chile a year ago and i now how terrible can be, mostly because of the Tsunami, those are horrible and im watching the ones in Japan, im still amazed how much damage those things do.

My best wishes to all japanese people.

It's really horrible. It's a good thing that Japan is always prepared for these kinds of disasters. I hope they'll make a good recovery and that most of the people missing can be found safe.

I saw a couple of posts mentioning the PD headquarters, so I checked Kazunori Yamauchi's twitter. There are two posts 7 hours ago:

"はい、怪我した人もいません。みなさんは、大丈夫ですか?"

"ポリフォニーデジタルは、2つのスタジオとも無事です。"

I'm not speaking Japanese, so I used Google translate. Here is the translations:

"Yes, some people were not injured. Do you guys okay?"

"Polyphony, the two studios are also safe."

Obviously, Google translate doesn't handle Japanese in the best way, but it seems like the studios (and the staff?) are okay.

I'm just waiting to see if the tsunami is gonna hit my home town. The first wave just hit, and no I dont know whats going on.

Meanwhile, the World Nuclear Association has said it understands the situation at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant is "under control", and that water is now being pumped into its cooling system. The Japanese government earlier declared an emergency as a precaution and evacuated people living nearby, after there was a malfunction and the water level began to fall. A WNA analyst said the back-up battery power system was now online.

Looking at the live images now. Scary footage of some kind of giant whirlpool at the coast. There is a little boat being sucked to the center of it. Hopefully that boat is empty. Forces of nature are incredible.

I've seen several images of this whirlpool. It is gigantic, and only a short distance offshore. There is no visible tornado or waterspout apparent. Quite what physical mechanism would cause such a sustained vortex is a question.

My thoughts go out to all Japanese people.

When I saw the live images I was simply stunned by the sheer scale and destructive force of the tsunami.

It really makes you think how small and helpless us humans are against the wrath of Mother Earth.

Stay safe people!
