Mets re-signed both Fernando Salas and Jerry Blevins. If their offense performs okay and their pitching stays healthy they will be around come October.

I heard earlier today on The Doug Gottlieb Show that Andrew McCutchen will be moved from center field to right field. I just hope "The Cutch" can still be productive. Maybe he'll even be a better player at a new position kind of like James Harden is in the NBA now.

The Miami Marlins are for sale. Asking price? About $1.6B USD. I surely which I had that much coin. Then again, we all do.

On a different note, I hear pitcher C.J. Wilson will retire. I respect him as a pitcher and as a car and motorsports fan. I wish him all the best in his retirement from baseball.

Wilson wants to run LeMans this year.

On another note, a fellow high school upperclassman of mine is one of the bidders for the Miami Marlins.

When asked on "The Doug Gottlieb Show" yesterday if he would return to baseball, C.J. Wilson said he wasn't sure. It's cool for us racing fans for C.J. Wilson to pursue his racing passion. He was still a pretty solid pitcher almost anywhere he went. C.J. Wilson talked about racing Porsches and stuff like that. I mean, I'm proud for C.J. Wilson on the racing front and even in baseball.

By the way, Blitz24, do you see your Mets making the postseason like they did last season? And can they go farther than they did last postseason?

Can they? Yes. If their rotation is healthy they have a very good shot of making the playoffs. Will they go further? That depends if they can hit. They lost last year because they got shut down by MadBum.

Sad day for sure. He got to see his Red Wings get the Stanley Cup, but he tried so hard and has tried for so long to get a World Series for Detroit. I always hope they'll win it (probably won't happen with how shaky the Tigers were last year), but it will be really sad that Mike did his best to get the Tigers to the end, and if they do win one soon, he won't be alive to see his efforts come to fruition. At the very least, he did get to see the team go from a dumpster fire to a relevant team that usually is guaranteed a chance to go to the playoffs. Detroit sports fans will forever be grateful to him.

Wow... terrible news. My thoughts and prayers are surely with the Ilitch family and all whom have known and loved Mike Ilitch.

Brandon Phillips got traded from the Cincinnati Reds to the Atlanta Braves. The Braves will need all the help they can get considering their brutal season last season. Cincinnati has had it rough themselves lately. So I'm sure they'll be looking to bolster their lineup even in giving up Brandon Phillips.

I enjoyed BP's time with the Reds, but he wasn't going to be part of the their future. I was fine with the trade. They probably didn't get much in return with the two pitchers they got, but whatever. With Cozart and BP, they needed room somewhere in the infield for Peraza and Herrera (should he play well in the spring). 2nd base opening up should give them much more playing time.

With Cueto, Bruce, Frazier, and now Phillips gone, I think this basically leaves Votto and Bailey (who just had surgery AGAIN for bone spurs in his elbow while rehabbing :banghead:) as the only two left of the main core from just a couple of years ago.

Interestingly, they also signed back Bronson Arroyo to a minor league contract. We'll see how he performs in the spring. Even if he doesn't make the big league club, he's sure to have an impact on the younger players.

You know, the Spring Training games are coming up. So we'll get a chance to see what some of the young talents fare as well as returning players getting loose before the first "PLAY BALL!" of the regular season. I certainly am excited for my Houston Astros. And no- I am STILL not buying the "2017 World Series Champions" prediction by Sports Illustrated. I'll tell you what... I love chicken, but you may have to prepare me the biggest crow dinner should the Astros somehow make it to and win the World Series this season. At least from the Astros Fan Day earlier this month, there is some excitement and hope that the Astros will emerge after missing out on the playoffs last season.

Maybe in a future post, I'll share my division-by-division thoughts. Or you can share what team(s) you think we should look out for... even including possible sleepers.

You all enjoy the Spring Training action. Remember that these games don't mean anything towards the regular season. So just play these games to gear up for the madness we like to call the regular season.

To that end, my Houston Astros got spanked 11-4 by the Detroit Tigers in their first Preseason game yesterday. But of course, these games don't matter. Just have to get the batters swinging and the pitchers try to get into their groove.

I think I'll take this time to think about the upcoming season. Kind of a mini assessment. Follow my lead...

American League: East
Would you look at me funny if I told you the best team in the American League East is from Canada? I am nowadays starting to be more sold on the Toronto Blue Jays to take the AL East. Normally, I'd roll with the New York Yankees. I'm not really sure who I'd take between Boston and Baltimore. And Tampa Bay? I don't see them making too much noise.

American League: Central
You know Cleveland will want another chance at a World Series title after falling to the Chicago Cubs in last year's World Series. While I do think Cleveland will be a competitive bunch, I am kind of rolling with the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central. Third in the AL Central food chain would probably be the Chicago White Sox. Next to last for me would probably be the Kansas City Royals. And unless a complete resurgence happens, I don't see the Minnesota Twins being any real factor in the AL Central.

American League: West
As much as I love my Houston Astros, the AL West is for Sanji Himura's Texas Rangers until someone else in the AL West can prove they are better. The "2017 World Series Champions" prediction by Sports Illustrated for my Astros is still very far-fetched. Of course I want my Astros to win it all. However, I am still fairly sketchy this team can be that lights out, baller franchise that can win it all. We didn't make it into the playoffs last season. If we manage to play hard and not concede to teams like Texas, the Astros have World Series hope. The team that concerns me the most is Seattle. I have them as that 3rd Place team, but don't be surprised if Seattle starts creeping up and trying to assert themselves to be AL West contenders. Now on to California's two AL West teams. I'm looking for Patrick's Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim to do better than their Oakland Athletics counterparts. But to me, I think the AL West goes through the state of Texas. Just remember to also account for California and [the state of] Washington as well.

National League: East
Many will think the NL East is for the Washington Nationals to lose. You'd be foolish not to have Blitz24's New York Mets as any favorites to take the NL East. What about the other three NL East teams? I have the most faith in Omnis' Miami Marlins. The Philadelphia Phillies will probably be battling among themselves sharing the NL East basement with the Atlanta Braves. I do think Atlanta will improve, however. It's going to take some time, though.

National League: Central
You thought it wouldn't happen ever again, but it did. The Chicago Cubs are the defending champions. Can they repeat? In a word- no. They could, but it's incredibly tough. Often times, the NL Central is usually the St. Louis Cardinals... then everybody else. Surely keep tabs on the Cubs-Cardinals games. The Bman's Pittsburgh Pirates will be competitive. I don't know if they can hang with St. Louis and the Cubbies, though. This leaves the bottom of the barrel between the Milwaukee Brewers and Dolph Drago's Cincinnati Reds. I think the Reds will get better, but like Atlanta, it will take some time. Though not to say Milwaukee will be leaps-and-bounds improved either.

National League: West
You could almost pick any team to win the NL West. Much like I think the AL West goes through Texas, the NL West goes through California. I'm expecting a close fight between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants for the NL West. I honestly don't know who I'd take between those two. My heart kind of wants to roll with San Francisco. Middle of the road to me for the NL West would be the Colorado Rockies. Close behind Colorado for me would be the Arizona Diamondbacks. And therefore... I see the San Diego Padres bringing up the rear in the NL West.

These aren't professional opinions, but just my own thoughts on this upcoming season. How do you see all 30 teams (or just your favorite ones)? Keep enjoying the Spring Training games!

The Reds are 0-4 to start preseason. Nice start...:)

We should be improved this year, but I still don't know if it will be enough to get out of the cellar of the NL Central. We might be better than Milwaukee, but barring any surprises, I don't foresee us doing any better than that.

For the first time following scores, we actually WON a Spring Training game for a chance. Unfortunately, that 12-2 win today had to happen against my good mate Blitz24 and his New York Mets. I'm looking for both the Astros and the Mets to respectively have good seasons. You know, my Astros and the Mets both came into the league in the same season- 1962. Of course then, my Astros were the Colt 45s before becoming the Astros you know and (probably) love.

Actually, the Mets had a split squad deal. One Mets team lost to my Astros, but the other split squad beat Boston 8-7.

Do remember- this is Spring Training. None of these games mean anything towards the regular season or playoffs. Just make sure to keep your players healthy once the season begins proper.

Now that the World Baseball Classic is done for, a lot more of the Spring Training action resumes. I was watching a little bit of Dolph Drago's Cincinnati Reds take on the Chicago White Sox. It was 3-0, CHW in the Top of the 8th until CIN belted an RBI double to trim the deficit to 3-2. I didn't see too much of the game afterwards except that CHW went up 4-2 later.

But again- these are Spring Training games. They don't mean anything. I think the White Sox will probably be middle-of-the-road in the AL Central. I'm still thinking Detroit will be the best in the AL Central unless Cleveland has something to say about it. As for the Reds, I think the NL Central will be for the Cubs and/or Cardinals to lose. I don't really see the Reds making some kind of surprise run. However, never count out the possibility of a lesser team overachieving or being ahead of schedule.

One sad note to pass along, my condolences go out in loving memory of Dallas Green, who died yesterday at the age of 82. He helped manage the Philadelphia Phillies to the 1980 World Series that the Phillies eventually won. He managed several other teams including the New York Yankees and the New York Mets.

We're almost a week away from the first regular season series! Can you believe it?

If things go as I think they will, it will be the Tigers, Indians, and Royals duking it out in the AL Central with a chance that the Twins could play spoiler. KC may have been struggling more than people thought they would, but both the Tigers and Indians tend to run into injury problems mid-season and Cleveland already is dealing with injury problems as is. It may still be close in the AL Central again this year as it has been for most of the recent seasons. It's hard to say who would win because the team that plays the most consistent baseball with the healthiest roster will probably win the division (which frankly could be anyone).

Can you believe that by this time next week, the regular season starts? There will be the Opening Night game on April 2nd, but just about everybody else will start that 162 game grind by this time next week. Get psyched- it will be time to Play Ball again!

When the 2017 regular season starts up, we will see a handful of teams begin their 162-game grind. Here are some of the first games of the 2017 season (starting pitchers not listed):

I am late, but baseball is back starting today. You were waiting for years for baseball to return from the long Winter. Well? It's back! So get psyched for a new season of Major League Baseball!

Good luck to all of your favorite teams, and uh...

PLAY BALL!

Madison Bumgarner is currently leading the MLB with home runs and a 1.000 batting average. Even if it's day one and only a handful of games have been played, that's still incredible to me.

Yeah, but MadBum's Home Run performance was spoiled with Arizona going walk-off on defeating San Francisco in Phoenix. By the way, Joey D, what do you think about your Tigers this upcoming season? Or how do you think they'll do this season?

A bunch of teams started their 2017 campaign. Now, just about everybody else will begin theirs. A number of games are in progress right now actually. You can't be champions in April. Nobody is going 162-0 on the regular season. You're going to lose; just don't lose with regularity if you expect to be any kind of contender. Just take things as they are and play hard every inning, every game, every day.

Good luck to all of your favorite teams, and most importantly...

PLAY BALL!

I'm unsure about the Tigers, their team is still really good on paper but there are still too many wildcards. I think it helps that we are in the same division as the Twins, White Sox, and Royals though. Cleveland will probably win the division, even though their pitching died out they still have killer offense, so the question remains can the Tigers make a run at the wild card?

Oh and the Padres are going to lose over 100 games this year aren't they? I almost feel bad for them because we were there with the Tigers not that long ago.

The general sort of consensus I've seen for 2017 is that the Red Sox will make the World Series, and the Padres will have the worst record. A long season awaits us all. So we'll see how the season goes to see if either prediction materializes.

Earlier today, I saw Matt Trumbo hit a "Trumbomb" to win in walkoff fashion in 11 innings against Toronto. Nothing like a walk-off jack to win a game.

I'll probably chime in on how my Astros did in a later post. Meanwhile, I'm sure our Blitz24 is happy his New York Mets won today 6-0 hosting Atlanta Braves.

New year, same old Reds. Pitcher getting beat around in the 1st inning, offense squandering scoring opportunities, and mounting a comeback only to fall just short.

Case in point, we loaded the bases with 0 outs in the 3rd inning and only scored one off a sac fly. The bases were juiced again in the 4th with 1 out and we got nothin'. Naturally, New Red Scooter Gennett hit a 2 run bomb with 2 outs in the 9th to get our hopes up but inevitably lose by 1. Going to be another great year in Cincy...
