I just got a 3rd in the Welsh Karate Federation Close.

In teh second round a n00b punched me in the eye twice knocking my contact out so I kicked him in the nose, not 100% prurposely but it was worth losing a point for it :D.

Speaking of Katas, I just learned Kata 1 yesterday. Can't wait for my bokken to come in.

That's just lame.

I never ever have seen the point of kata's.

Yes, that was lame because it was a performance and kata are not for performance. A solo kata is done so the practitioner internalizes a movement (commits it to muscle memory).

two (or more) person kata are done so that the persons learns proper timing and distance, as well as technique application. But, let's face it, if you have improper timing or distance you have improper technique application.

Hell yes. It was hard as hell judging and compensating movement with my sensei. It was hard for the both of us, you know? Both people have to do it perfectly, not just one, or else it all gets ruined.

Katas are good to learn to coordinate in a 3D. They're my least favorite aspect of karate, that is what I do know. A 2 person kata is a kumite I believe? I don't mind doing kumites, but of course it is kind of unrealistic because you already know what the other is going to do.

The 'kata' in the video is just gay, looks like a dance the backstreet boys would do in front of a crowd of screaming teenage girls.

It's a show you'd expect from Wushu practitioners, but not Karate...

Like Speedy Samurai said, katas are not for show. When I went to a martial arts demonstration with different styles they invited the 5th dan multiple European kata champion as the main attraction and people fell asleep watching it. Then when Wushu and Capoeira was displayed by a bunch of 20 year olds the crowd suddenly did get enthusiastic.

The 2 person kata in Karate are 'kumite' perhaps, but in many other traditional martial arts the 2 person kata are just kata.

You're probably right, I wouldn't know. By the way I added something to my previous post. :)

*edit*

You're from Japan, I can't argue about this with you. :D

A 2 person kata which is two people ding fixed moves to each other is either an Oyo (Sp?) or a Kihon. Or atleast that's what we call them.

Wel all so do team kata which is 3 people doing kata simultaneously.

(P.s. Does anyone know Kri shan ku?)

Now let's stop about kata's and have a looksie at how to fight in a bar setting, because who the hell goes there to drink and have fun anymore?

Bas Rutten himself will teach you how to savagely destroy someone in a bar. Pretty funny for me is that his way of explaining things is kind of similar to the way my karate teacher does it. I learned some of the exact same moves from him. Of course I doubt that these tricks always work in a hectic crowded setting.

yeah bas rutten is my fav. :D did you see his self defence for women video?

bas rutten is one of the coolest people on the planet. "I'm sorry bam bang bang. no i'm not!!"

Kihon in Japanese means 'basic' (more or less) Most japanese martial arts have 'kihon' a few kata that teach movements that you will use to do all the other kata. All 2 person kata, however, are not kihon.

LMFAO. I love Bas Rutten. Cool moves, though. I hope I never have to use them.

I realise that Kihon means basic. However, I that is what the WKA (Welsh Karate Association) clubs call '2 person katas. Whether I used the correct spelling I don't know.

Meh. Our freakin' "dojo" is getting renovated. They'd better put a suspended wood floor or something in that park assembly hall.

What do you train on now?

We train on a tile floor once a week and suspended wood floor once a week aswell. Tile floors are great for practising break falls :ouch:

We use disgusting public park "utility" tile. You know....that generic crap that's in the lobby of pretty much every public city/county building. At least I have some good calluses from it. There is one area that is totally uneven and crap. If we're sparring, it feels like walking on cheese graters if you step over there. Our half of the room is funny, too. My old sensei cracked so many tiles on our side because of his awesome fumikomi. The side where the karate people were is all neat and clean and crap. They use mats like little cupcake-warriors.

Cup-cake warriors? We don't get fricking armour!

Hahahahaha. I'm not talking about you guys, I'm talking about the people that share our "dojo". I keed, though, I keed.
