Just call it AMG GT3-LT and actually make the tail longer, unlike that other manufacturer.

2 years before Porsche first put the GT3 moniker on the 911

Time isn't that important in this situation, though. Porsche is, rightly or wrongly, the name most-often associated with GT3 badging. They're the Edison to Lotus' Tesla.

I just don't get why Porsche have to be 🤬 about who can and who can't use the GT3 name for homologation cars for the GT3 series. I've seen plenty of cars named GTO, GTR, GTS, etc. without the manufacturers who "own" the name kicking up such a fuss.

Because Porsche wants to be "that brand".

Earlier today while watching The Masters (I rarely follow golf), I saw a commercial featuring the AMG GT. This car may not look very imposing, but it is certainly a beautiful machine. The spot on TV featured a yellow AMG GT going around Circuit of the Americas. It was pretty cool. I'd love to see one of these AMG GTs in person.

*rubs hands* 600hp AWD convertble. Oh wait...

Seriously, I do hope it has a different name other than Black Series. I'm going with SLR.

It's really early for a Black Series though, isn't it? I swear I read an interview that said that name wasn't on the cards for the GT, either.

Well, all I can think of is either an AMG version of a car they haven't AMG'd yet, a Black Edition for a current AMG car OR a faster version of the AMG GT.

Merc said they were working on a more hardcore GT based off their new GT3 car and that a Black Series would arrive near the end of the life cycle.

Well then this is likely the GT3 then. If this car is indeed the AMG-GT. It could be a C63 AMG for all we know.

Not going to be a Black Series when there's a model under the GT-S (AMG GT) still to be released in the Fall.

The Mercedes C-Class coupe is on its way. It could be the C63/S.

Oh look, they added a static wing and slightly more aggressive rear diffuser. I'd guess there's more power too but that will remain to be seen.

Saw one the other day on the road, and by coincidence saw an SLS shortly after. I prefer the looks of the SLS, it's more aggressive and exotic looking, lower and wider.

Back on the subject of the AMG GT. I saw one for the first time in the wild today. Well, quasi wild...an outdoor car show in ann arbor. It was parked between an Alfa 4C Spider and a Triumph Dolomite. Needless to say, it looked rather un-special next to it's neighbors, and it doesn't have anything like the street presence that the SLS did. Still, it's an attractive car.

I'd get this instead of the MX-5 but, those taxes man. We get killed here.

Mercedes-AMG GT pricing*
GT S (a) $295,000
GT S Edition 1 $314,900
*Excludes on-road costs.
MERCEDES-BENZ’S flagship sports model – the all-new AMG GT S – has officially gone on sale in Australia with the blessing of five-time motorcycle grand prix world champion Mick Doohan.

The AMG brand ambassador could be expected to heap praise on the mighty twin-turbocharged V8-powered two-seater sportscar, which is priced from $295,000 plus on-road costs and made its Australian debut this week at the iconic Mount Panorama raceway.

But after taking GoAuto for a few hot laps of the punishing Bathurst track, the motorsport legend was genuinely impressed by the vehicle’s performance.

“I haven’t driven it on the street just yet but I don’t think I need to,” he said. “Most cars, you put them onto a racetrack and it’s almost like you know what to expect, but this far exceeds what I was expecting.

“As a circuit car it’s amazing. The feedback it gives you and the thrill it gives you, I can’t wait to drive it on the street.”

While the new model has been generating considerable attention in Australia, Mercedes is not planning to dent rival brands’ sales with huge volume. Instead, the company is pitching the GT S as a new halo for the company.

Speaking at the ‘Festival of AMG’ and the vehicle’s launch at Bathurst, Mercedes-Benz Australia/Pacific senior manager of public relations, product and corporate communications David McCarthy explained the vehicle’s positioning.

“You’re only talking, first year, 150 cars,” he said. “Porsche will see a lot more 911s than that and that’s probably its closest competitor. Some people say Maserati but I don’t think so.

“Jaguar perhaps but again I don’t classify it as a competitor. Stealing sales? We have more buyers than we have customers.

“A 911 buyer has a very different view of the world to a GT buyer.”

Despite relatively low volume predictions, Mr McCarthy said the sporty coupe would allow Mercedes to compete in a new segment, and that all sales counted.

“It fits in a price strata where really we didn’t play before,” he said. “It is much cheaper than an SL63, more expensive than when we had CLK63, and we haven’ t had an AMG E-Class coupe in the current generation. SLK55 is, again, a different car.”

While the GT is expected to win some conquest sales from rival brands, Mr McCarthy said a majority would be from existing well-heeled AMG customers, and was not seen as a replacement for the now-discontinued SLS supercar.
