Anyway i know it doesn't matter, but still why no 1080p?!!!
Could it have to do with the rumor that some things had to be cut back to make it fit on a Blu-Ray disc?

If I had to guess I would say that Kojima tried to put so much content into this that he had to cut back on the graphics.

And why is everything about the PS3 reliant on this game so much for you? Have you played any of the other games? This is an MGS4 thread, so I won't go off-topic to talk about other games, but this month marks one year of owning a PS3 for me and I have been completely happy with it on an SDTV with the other games that are out for it.

Too many people rely too much on the resolution being 720p or 1080p when some of us without HDTVs are still awestruck with the graphical quality.

I mean, did you say, "Halo can't even do 720p, the 360 is crap"?

Well MGS4 and GT5(and prologue) are the only games i will buy for the PS3, with the exception of COD4 wich was brilliant but is still a port off the 360.

Maybe i was expecting too much from the console.
I just thought there was alot of untapped potential in the PS3 because of the majority of the games being ports and not realizing its full power.
MGS4 is a massive game for the PS3 being a long standing exclusive, and being the best games ever made:tup:
i just thought the console was being held back, And this was the first game that would show off its full potential.
And it still will.

I won't doubt Kojima San!:)

Peace

1) I suggest you check out more games. There are some real gems, especially in some of the PSN games.

2) So far Prologue is the only game to really try to pull 1080p at 60fps, and its issues were minimal considering we don't even have the full product to make a final judgment yet.

3) From what I have been hearing I think MGS4 just has too much content to do 1080p properly. When we get finished and realize that MGS4 has more video sequences than any movie on Blu-Ray I think we will appreciate that.

Expecting the first set of games to be the ones to show off a console's abilities is always foolish. The PS2 wasn't really shown off until just a couple of years ago. I would put money on expecting to see so much more from the PS3 over the next three to five years. The fact that I am already amazed with my system has me truly excited for what stuff will come out that has yet to even be conceptualized.

I have a feeling that once you start playing the game and get into the story that you will quit noticing that it is only 720p.

You can play every game in 1080p (even the ones that only say 720p like warhwack, all you have to do is uncheck 1080i and 720p in the Screen options
its not FULL 1080p for some games if game does not support 1080p
Games like GTA4 supports that so it looks better a bit on my tv (less jaggies)
Games like warwhack looks the same on 1080p as in 720p as well other 720p games that i play on 1080p looks really the same or similar.

So in the end, you can play all games in 1080p haha

COD4 was not a port of the 360 version, the PS3 version had its own development team.....

http://www.psu.com/PS3-development-was-easy,-says-COD4-developer-News--a0001806-p0.php

...and resolution alone seems a strange reason to dismiss games. You say that COD4 is brilliant (and I agree), yet that has a native resolution of around 600p, its then scaled to 720p or 1080p.

Agree 100%

Again 100% agree

If early reviews are to be believed is has around 20 hours of gameplay and 9 hours of cut-scenes, if they are all running at 720p native (with full 7.1 uncompressed audio) then that's a lot of disc space even for a dual layer BR. Keep in mind that the comments that they ran out of disc space could actually be a factor in this as well.

Again 100% agree, many of the best looking and technically advanced PS2 games came out well into its 5 year (or more) of life.

I have a feeling that once you start playing the game and get into the story that you will quit noticing that it is only 720p.
Again 100% agree. Its never been something I have to say that has put me off a game, plenty of the PSN games run at 1080P, that doesn't make them better games (or better looking) that the likes of COD4 (running at around 600p).

Like I've said, I am playing Metal Gear Solid for the first time right now and the first thing I noticed was that Snake didn't have a face due to the low PS1 graphics.

That was quickly forgotten when I heard, "Hey, whose footprints are these?"

Similarly, I imagine some videophile will start up MGS4 and say, "Hey, it's only 720p," and then ten minutes later, "OMFG, did you see that!?"

People who hark on about the resolutions when the game looks as good as MGS4 does really need to look at what they are actually saying and then stop. MGS4 is one of, if not the best looking game I have seen regadless of it running in 720 or 1080 or whatever, the fact is that it is high definition and it does look amazing. The real icing on the cakeis that it's supposed to be an immensely brilliant game, expecially for fans of the series. Which is nice.

Don't get me wrong im not dissmissing the game because of its resolution, i bought my ps3, a Toshiba 42Z3030D and a set of Logitech Z5500's for this game and GT5 alone.

I just want this game to be the best it can be.

Same thing with my ps2 only games i owned were MGS2 + 3 and GT3.

Reason i dont check out more games is because i dont play many console games or 1 player games, Metalgear is the only one i play.
Multiplayer is the best part of gaming wich is why COD4 was so good coz it matched PC play in terms of online.

I wish I knew where this came from.

Maybe it is an age thing? I grew up playing games before Internet was widely popular and so to me the heart and sole of a game is story and/or gameplay. Too many shoddy games are immensely popular due to the online (I'm looking at you Halo). If a game requires a "Yeah, but the multiplayer is awesome" then it isn't a good full game. The only game I have given a multiplayer pass to is Warhawk, and that is because they charged a discounted rate, or threw in a Bluetooth headset.

The only other game I have taken online so far is GT5P and that has been rare. Unless the goal is to create a solely multiplayer game then multiplayer is a feature and should not be better than the game itself. I know more people who can tell me the story lines behind Red vs Blue than can tell me the storyline in Halo 2 and Halo 3. Heck, I beat Halo 2 and I still don't know what the point was. It was like someone forgot the plot. Well, they had the plot, Earth is invaded, but then they went, "Look over there!" and next thing I knew I wasn't on Earth.

Wonder why I like MGS.

Anyway, I think my point is that I want my game to entertain me whether or not my friends are playing it.

^Amen to that FK, I agree completely. Even if a game is fantastic online I rarely actually play online. I'm much more interested in a sold game than a solid multiplayer. Sure there's a time, place and plenty of fun to be had from online, but it's no substitute for a fabulous single player experience.

It's the best it can be at 720p. Stop posting.

Gamestop has a list of stores that will have midnight launches for MGS4.

Warning: PDF http://www.gamestop.com/gs/landing/mgs4/MGS4Midnight.pdf?affid=3346&wt.mc_id=mgs4

I hope I can score a PS3 bundle.

Hey, that looks familiar... https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showpost.php?p=3042074&postcount=1036 :D

Are you gonna go? I don't think I will. I'm getting mine in the mail from Best Buy. However, I could just get a copy from GS at midnight and then return the Best Buy copy to GS when it arrives and say, "My kid already got it."

Oh, man. Sorry Solid Lifters, I didn't see that. This hang over hasn't been treating me well today. :ill:

If Gamestop has the bundles in stock, I'll go. I usually have Thursdays off.

Well, it's official. Jackasses all over the World are beginning to spoil the game by posting exactly what happens by every cutscene they encounter and are providing the pictures to prove it. Moderators over at MGS:TUS have already banned, for six months, several people trying to spoil big secrets of the game.

So, with that, I'm out'a here. I'm taking Ryan Payton's advice. He made this post over at NeoGaf forums, and it sounds like sound advice.

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.

I'm breaking radio silence to first, thank BruceLeeRoy for the most amazing Official Thread the internet will ever see. You're giving our official site a run for its money, and now our webmaster hates you.

And secondly, I'm here to to ruin the party by begging all of you to avoid this thread until you finish the game. I guarantee there will be spoilers coming out today that will ruin some of the MGS4 experience.

You and I have waited too damn long for June 12, 2008. Unplug for seven days, you won't regret it.

See you guys in a week, or so. ;)

So it's Snake Kills Dumbedore for adults. Nice.

I've been a devoted MGS fan since I played MGS on the PSone and it was and always will be my favourite game of all time!
MGS2 SOL was my least favourite but still very playable .. then along came Snake eater and the whole game was transformed to another level .. again I was stunned and addicted from the release date and will never forget the tension when trying to find the end for the first time and listening in for him snoring to sneak up on him, and how he caught me out with his crazy breathing and then my death was simply awesome!

Thats how I like to remember the MGS series and was looking forward to more of the same .... Until! I downloaded and tested that beta download :ill: absolute garbage control of the character and it seemed like I would need a degree in rocket science just to get him to move through a simple test level

Now my question is this! ... Is MGS4 going to be controlled in the same way as the beta was all complex and crazy? or are we going back to the old fashioned controls the way we did with the DS2? because if the new game plays anything like the beta? I will not be buying it :( and will say goodbye to my fave game series and thats not what I want 👎 I want to play it like everyone else but I don't fancy the mental torture of such a crazy layout of controls.

I prefer the simple forward and left right controls and shoulder buttons for navigating the menu's etc ... somebody tell me that beta was a bad attempt at improvement and they have scrapped it and went back to basics please!

cheers
Ron.

Thanks for the info Jeremy 👍 I just hunted out the old beta thread and read what was there and see I am not alone in the disliking of the new controls, I'm torn here  I really want to play this game but I don't think my brain can control all 10 fingers for seperate tasks at the same time haha :sly:

I suppose I will end up giving in and buying it when I see all you lot going on about how wicked it is ;) .. and then i'll get my son to show me how to play it
Cheers
Ron.

It's not as complex as you make it out to be, if you spend some more time with it, it'll come around. It really is much more fluid than previous entries into the series.

The controls in MGO didn't bother me, it was the camera position, but MGS4's is supposed to follow Snake which will e much better.

This contains no actual spoilers, but I'm going to stick it as such just in case, because it comes very close to brushing the subject ... it's more an opinion on the spoilers than anything else, but don't say I didn't warn you.
Well, as I won't be able to play the game for a very long time, I've been on the active hunt for spoilers. I haven't got the full picture here and obviously won't post any, but having read some forum threads where secrets were divulged (usually in thread titles by people with the mentality of an eight-year-old), I can say that I think the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull effect may come into play: some of the things I've read have been very polarising in nature. Mind you, most of it was posted and replied to by fanboys with the mentality of an average garden-variety salamander, all of whom seem to think they know better than Hideo Kojima when it comes to making a Metal Gear Solid game. In fact, most of them seem to have forgotten that this is a Metal Gear Solid game made by Hideo Kojima, the man who has previously given us boss fights against men with power over bees. While some of the spoilers do seem a bit out there, I'm sure Kojima-san will make them sound perfectly reasonable in-game.
