I have another quick query leading on from my questions above, if I decide to host the server for me and my friend can it be the world I have already created, and I invite her? Presumably she would need to start with nothing though but that's OK, just think it would be awesome if it could be the world I have already worked on, even if she starts out alone in another part of it. I saw an option in the menu something like "invite to LAN".

Regarding Creepers, they are a pain, particularly at first but I ended up turning the difficulty down to "Easy", which is unusual for me, however may ramp it up again now as have some decent armour and actually found one helped me out last night as I am digging a big open-caste mine. The biggest killers now for me are falling in lava with no water nearby, or occasionally falling from a great height.

Build with more explosion resistant blocks?

Yes, but I'm asking how do others deal with their habit of silently sneaking up behind players.

@Tyger: Ugh, lava. My biggest enemies aren't zombies, skeletons, spiders, and whatnot but that darn lava. Back when I was fairly unfamiliar with the game, I died to it at least twice. Ever since then, I always carry two buckets of water with me so I can get rid of it.

Yes, You can use your existing world.

I would suggest setting up a Bukkit server. It's what all major server run on including my own. Let me know if you would like some help.

May need an Admin to assist me.

I was just about to claim my house, but overnight the person who built near me decided to claim over it. :l

@ Niop007 - Your claim under the mountain affects my home on the top of it.

You built near me, not the other way around. Me and RPH built that house long before you built above us.

To be fair, we gave you several months to claim that area. Now I have an addition planned to go further into the mountain. I saw that area still wasn't claimed and decided to claim it myself.

I couldn't use those several months as the claim was still taking up a good chunk of the facility I was planning. I was waiting to ask you to kindly remove a few blocks of the claim but I guess that fell through.

DQ, is there any chance or way of implementing a big pointy mountain similar to the one I built on? I'm interested in converting the whole thing. The Rainbow home will be situated on top with numerous tubes and waterslides cascading through and around the mountain. It will be the best thing since Condom Castle!

Here's where I fall down again, as I know precisely next to zip about hosting a server for anything. Can I host it on my regular PC when it's just the two of us playing, or does it need to be a separate PC or server? And from what you've said, there is more to it than just using the game itself to hook us up, do I need a third party service for my PC to act as the server she uses? Perhaps I was being a little naive about what is actually involved here :)

It depends how powerful your PC is. Some would have no problem hosting a server and playing minecraft at the same time, others may struggle.

It's not that involved. You set up the server on your PC, then forward the port on your router and give your friend the address.

Just post your PC specs.

If my laptop from 2010 can run a server for a handful people, then it shouldn't be that hard, unless... :indiff:

i7 3.4GHz 12MB RAM GeForce GTX 560Ti, should be OK I think?

Looking at the Minecraft wiki page on setting up, it seems far from simple though, well for a layman like me. For a start, although we use a router my PC is connected via ethernet cable, so I think bypasses the router anyway, so can't use the router to forward the port? Or am I off the mark there? And I don't have wireless. I did read something about Hamachi VPN but not sure that is any less complex. Will give it a crack one way or another some time I guess.

Frankly overkill(Though it better not have 12MB of RAM! You seem to have mistyped "GB"). You forward the port through the router(Login information should be on the router) if you are connected to it with a cable.

^Yup.

Even if you're using a cable, you'll be connected to the router.

I originally thought that was the case as I needed to forward my port for something else, then noticed I still had internet when the router was off once...odd. I guess it leapfrogs it when it is off.

Anyway at least I know how to forward the port now, just have to configure the server software I guess. Thanks for your help guys :)

I've still got some stuff to do when I come home that I want to have finished before GTA5 launches :D

Server updated to 1.6.3

How do people feel about a map reset when 1.7 comes out? It may be possible to shrink the world and then run a second one at the same time.

New perk for sponsors, do /co i to use the coreprotect inspector and check griefing.

I didn't want to do much on my new laptop until I wipe it tomorrow but I had to find out how well it runs minecraft. I must say I'm impressed. I will be playing minecraft more often.
