Well my Dad owns a Civic Type R as a second car and it really is sporty. It is light and the the 200 hp Vtec runs up to 9000 rpm - Honda is known to produce world's best engines - the S2000 is still holding the world record for most hp per litre !
I drive a slightly modified Subaru Impreza WRX STi ( which can be compared best to the Evo ) with about 300 - 310 hp and of course it is faster than the Civic !
The Civic Type R is still an awsome car with superior handling - tuning without installing a turbo/supercharger ist not a big deal though which limits the high end capacity of the car. Honda is NA - I really hate those guys who install turbos and such...but that's another story...
class 1 : Civic / Integra Type R - Mazda RX8 - Subaru Impreza WRX
class 2 : Subaru Impreza WRX STi - Mitsubishi Evo
class 3 : Nissan Skyline GT-R R34, Honda NSX-R, STi spec C, Evo MR, Supra
sth like that... that is stock competition, massive tuning can change everything a lot and is not the question.
Concerning WRC :
Mitsubishi is recovering and might be fighting for the win again within the next two years or so.
Subaru is still a car that can win almost every rally, but since the PSA company
invested like 5 times more money than Subaru over the past years, they ruled the WRC ( more testing, more research etc etc, of course Loeb had his part,too), but now they can't /don't want to afford it anymore...
