Most intense fight scenes

Just seen Danny the dog (aka Unleashed) & the opening fight is superb. Its really brutal. I dont think any martial arts fight has been quite this well made ever!

Threads like this one are marvellous memory joggers as people mention movies and scenes that you'd completely fogotten about 👍.

As I've been a martial artist since my teens, it's no surprise that I like movies from the Hong Kong studios (and their more modern and more Western progeny) with stars like Jackie Chan, Cynthia Rothrock, Jet Li et al. For those who've mentioned Steven Seagal, I give you applause; probably one of the best exponents of laconic aikido on the silver screen.

It's a shame that I'm guessing most of you will never have heard of any of the 'Chinese Kung Fu' films that contain some of the best hand-to-hand (or foot-to-head :)) fight scenes you're ever likely to see.

As I also do Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu Iaido (Japanese swordwork), it's also no surprise that I like "Sword Movies". The Last Samurai wasn't all that bad for a Hollywood effort and actually had some decent scenes - even tho' amongst the JSA (Japanese Sword Arts) community it's fashionable to mock this film, I think that if you can recognise the school of the actors involved they must be doing something right :D.

Honuorable mention goes to the Sai training scene in Daredevil - Jennifer Garner does a passable job of 'faking it' and could potentially become good if she studied the art seriously (as in not just for a film).

For 'fantasy' fighting, the LOTR films are pretty darned good - when it comes to memorable scenes the Last Ride of the Rohan is quite spectacular.

For 'modern', large scale, combat, there is no beating the opening scenes of Saving Private Ryan - that is a 'must see' section of film for all those that are eager for war (in that it'll change their minds).

I could go on and on with this as more keeps occurring to me but as I'm at work I have to dash :(.

.

I've seen many of Jackie Chans crazy stunt work and yes hollywood can never compare to that straight up crazy ass ****.

Oh yeah, that was awesome. Where he fights those 2 guys, right?

For the people mentioning Jackie Chan I think you have forgotten about the scene in Police Story 2 where he fights about 30 guys in the playground and the scene in Armour of God where he fights the 4 women near the end. Those were Great!

Favourite fight scene has to be the battle at the start of Predator, and the part where Mac uses Blain's minigun to destroy the forest. Classic.

My vote goes to the "Burly Brawl" in The Matrix Reloaded. Man when I saw that in the theatre I couldn't belive how relentless it was! I've never seen any fight where the guy takes on like 30-40 guys all at once. In hindsight it could have withstood a minute or minute and half less screen time and still seemed long and intense.

Definetley my favorite all time cinema fight.

And just for giggles I nominate any fight scene from Mission Impossible 2 as the worst example of over hyped un-realistic fight scenes ever. That movie tries far to hard to be cool and fails so miserably and is so insulting to ones intellegence that it's breath taking.

So you like Reloaded, but thought MI2 was daft?? lol ok!?

At least Cruise did the stunts, half of the fight your on about in Reloaded was so clearly CGi'd it was unbeleivable.
The gunfights in MI2 i like alot, although Cruise's beretta's make an odd noise

Damn, I've yet to see even one 1 mission impossible movie. I thought troy had the best mass army fight scene. But that was CGi mostly. It's funny that the movie with the most extras used in one scene would be GHANDI, at his funeral scene. Inless that's changed?

Ong Bak had some great fight scenes, especially the last one, I'd recommend the film to anyone who enjoys their fight scenes

I liked every fight scene with Brad Pitt, in "Troy". Especially the one against Hector? the older brother?

I liked both Mission Impossible movies, but did like the first one WAY better. :)

I got that, but still haven't watched it yet.

Yeah his patented super high jump with downward jab is awesome. Orlando Bloom kinda pissed me off tho in that movie.

The fights in Troy were the best thing in that film the first fight in troy was brilliant the hector and achilles fight was the icing on the cake!

Watch it! :D let me know what you think

The Matrix fights are probably some of the best I've seen although the films got progressivley worse the fights never dissapointed. There's a lot of mention about Saving Private Ryan maybe I should watch it

The best mass army fight scene was clearly LOTR. But troy does have one of the best one-on-one melee scenes in the fight with Hector and Achillies.

I've just had one of those memory-jogs (caused by Dans's use of the word melee :)).

Some of the best 'medieval' fights were those that were in the recent re-make of "Joan of Arc" (the one with Mila Jojovich (now of "Resident Evil" fame) in it). The cringe-making wounds and general bloodiness will cure you of 'lust for battle' just as much as "Saving Private Ryan". I particularly remember the effects of dropping huge granite balls down prepared shutes in the defences of walls to repel attackers :yeuk:!

The one on one fight in Troy (Brad vs Eric) is superb, but the battle scene ones are rubbish, half it is so clearly cgi & its shot to close-up u cant tell what happens.

If we are including gun-fights, the most intense fight scene ever has to be in HEAT! that gunfight is just amazing & bleedin defining if you hav 5.1.

Yeah the fights I like better for sure. MI2 just treats audience intellegence like they have none.

I'll just ride my motorcycle at you full blast and then we'll both jump off and crash into each other. Then we'll get up like nothing really happened and have a way over the top fight.

I can take the Matrix's BS fight scenes because at the very least they are feasible in the context of the story. We're in a computer so we're not in reality. Amazing things can happen.

MI2 is supposed to take place in "reality". So every over the top thing they do just seems misplaced.

ha ha lol

Either way, the fights in MI2 are better. they just have more impact, ok they arent realistic, but they just seem better (to me).
Reloaded's fight are so limp, they have no punch no impact.

I think, I'm going to check this movie out.

One of the first DVD I watched in Dolby Digital 5.1(though I prefer DTS). The best part was at the end, by the Airport. You can hear the Jet flying in, then flying past you to the rear. 👍

All the above had great fight scenes. Seagal really showed how street effective the gentle art of Aikido is.

Jackie Chan, in my books, is the greatest Martial Arts Performer of all time so I'm suprised no one mention Mr Canton and Lady Rose.

It had some of the best stunt fighting I've ever seen. The scene in the cotton warehouse, the scene in the club where he has to prove himself to the other gangsters, the scene at the restaurant..

After Drunken Master 2, definately my favourite Jackie Chan flick

And to those who mentioned The Matrix.. bwhahahaha

Don't get me wrong, loved the series, but watching Keanu Reeves trying to do Kung Fu was like watching a robot.. guess that's why he fit the roll so well ;)

Though, I did enjoy the fight scene.. Very HK and not Hollywood. Single shot scenes meant he had to memorise 15-20 moves and combinations before the cut.. so I do applaud his efforts 👍

As said above Ong Bak is a true masterpeice of Kickboxing action. and "The Killer" has some very nice senes. and who can forget, Versus, grousome and gory in parts but if your into zombie flicks this is a must.

I would like to add the Fast and the Furious. There was that awesome fight with Paul Walker and later on in the movie you could see Vin Diesel in action.

Edge of the seat action... 'nuff said
