Rusty: "There are a lot of people that just hate me and they hate Steve and they're jealous of what we've been able to put together"

 Ah Rusty, still blind as ever.

Also, Stephen Wallace will be making his Sprint Cup debut in the #77 5 Hour Energy Toyota, racing for his dad as he is the only who would actually hire him.

Why?

He's hardly had success in Nationwide. Keep him there until he shows he's good enough to move up. Because right now, he's not.

Same goes for any other driver.

Rusty wants to have a cup team and Steve has a sponsor, that's why.

He will start at the rear, crash and everything will be back to normal.

Seems like this car is alot more changed then first mentioned. Not only is the nose changed, but the spoiler seems like its been reshaped at the edges and are more round. The Shark fin also seems more flush along the roofline to the trunk. One thing I'm curious about is if those braces on the spoiler are gonna be there for the entire season this time or just for the restrictor plate races like last year.

Edit: Kasey was texting (with his helmet on) while in the car. Isn't that illegal?

Not at all, I recall some years ago in talladega they were showing in car footage and edwards was texting on his blackberry while getting up to speed. While the commentators where talking about that the camera changed to tony stewart who wasn't even holding the wheel already at speed down the straight drinking from his cup.

Oh god, really?

Well, consistency is always a key factor in any sport. I can understand this deal as best as possible. I'd seem okay with it even if the point system was issued in multiples of 5 or something. I have to wonder even if the Nationwide and Trucks series would adopt similar systems. I think in Trucks, first place would get 36 points there are 36 or so trucks that race.

I do think this is an interesting point system being considered. Just don't know what to really make of it.

Yeah, the number of points will depend on the number of total runners I guess.

It's very logical obviously but it doesn't really reward finishing higher up the table. Obviously you get more points the higher up you finish, but not proportionately more.

If you finish five places ahead of 40th place you'll get five more points... and you'll only get five more points than 5th place if you finish first. Surely it's easier to move from 40th to 35th position on the track than it is to move from 5th to 1st, yet you aren't rewarded any better for making up those five top positions.

And apart from bragging rights, there's no real advantage in finishing first to second. Or third. Or even sixth. You could finish sixth a bunch of times with somebody else winning every race, yet if they retire in one race and lose those 43 potential points you'll probably still end up with more points. Not really fair on the guy who keeps on winning...

The more I think of the 43-1 table I dislike it even more. I really wish NASCAR would leave the points the way they are and just get rid of the Chase as there is no reason for it and would actually make it more exciting(mainly Johnson wouldn't be 5-time champion).

This seems to the progression.

-Matt Kenseth wins title convincingly with only 1 win, so NASCAR introduces the Chase. Doesn't add much excitement.

-They realize that doesn't work so they add more bonus points for winning and add 2 cars to it. It's revealed the standings would have been more interesting with the old setup.

-Still rather bland so now they make it 15 and introduce a 43-1 points table.*

*Rumored 2011 changes.

Really seems like instead of fixing the problem they just try patching it which only makes it worse. At this pace they will just introduce that stupid system they were thinking of doing for F1 and just basing the title on who has the most wins.

[/rant]

I suppose the Chase does reduce the risk of one driver running away with it but to me it seems NASCAR would be better served by a points system more like the old F1 10-6-4-3-2-1.

Obviously not exactly the same since grids are much bigger in NASCAR so most of the field would never get any points, but a system where the winner gets a decent percentage more points than the second-place driver, to place the emphasis on winning yet with a decent amount of points for lower positions so that you can still benefit from consistency.

You've got to reward winning drivers more than other drivers or there's no real incentive for winning races beyond pride. And prize money of first, but I do like to think that top racing drivers still place more value on wins than they do on the money they earn.

The one thing that gets to me in sports is... what IS a champion? Is the champion of a sport one who consistently plays hard and wins, or one who is at their best when it matters most? Think of this past season when it looked like Jimmie Johnson probably wouldn't make it into the Chase. Then when in the Chase, and albeit by a slim margin, who won last year's Chase? That guy who's the multi-time defending Cup champion.

By using this points system being considered, you basically have to win and keep winning to avoid being chased down by the other 42 drivers. I think the only real people who really love this system are those who have very little knowledge of NASCAR (let alone racing in general). Like I remember this topic recently being debated on ESPN's "Around the Horn" once during the Showdown segment. You know, "why do you get so many points in NASCAR?" You may well ask the same question for the Australian V8 Supercar Series for that matter.

The new point system just seems to pose more questions than answers. I don't think this proposed system will simplify much of anything. You sometimes just have to let the racing happen laissez-faire. You can't overly police everything in racing just to reach some sort of desired result.

Just got my Speedweeks 2011 plans finalized.

Bud Shootout/Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200

The Shootout was actually pretty lame last year, nothing stood out for me as opposed to other years. The ARCA race was the best I've seen though, Danica had an awesome save through the tri-oval, everyone, including myself approved. Nelson didn't fare so well though. It was nice to see them not out pretending it was a demo derby, instead to 190 mile an hour restrictor plate racing, who knew it could be done.

Daytona 500 Pole Qualifying.
Guy at my work had them for free and offered them to me at the same price. I'll say it's not edge of your seat stuff, but it's fun to watch, and hearing the cars row through the gears leaving the pits never gets old. Ever.

I'm most excited for the Nextera Energy 250 Camping World Truck Series race. I've not been since Carl Edwards won in the 99 Roush truck, whenever that was, I'm thinking '02 or '03 because it was ran in conjunction with the IROC race. Boy do I miss those... I really do enjoy watching the trucks though, and at the plate tracks, the trucks, in my opinion put on the best racing. There are just so many trucks going so fast, with so little room between them. I can't wait.

Got the same seats for both events. I've only convinced my girlfriend to go to one of them, and shes not decided on which. After our trip to the Rolex last year, I'm surprised I was able to talk her in to any

Anyone else going to any events during Speedweeks?

Watch it on Justin.tv then.

So what's this I hear about a new 43-1 points system?

Was listening about it on a podcast this morning. 43 points for first down to one point for last. Not confirmed yet but sounds like the daftest idea ever. Brilliant if you want to reward consistency, terrible if you want to reward winners.

I've kept track of an alternative F1 points system for the last four championships like this. One point per position and no bonus points. If there are 24 runners then the winner gets 24 points. Last place gets 1 point and anyone disqualified goes to the back of the results and scores no points. Whoever ends up with the most points has the highest average finishing position guaranteed. It has one major drawback. In a 20 race series. If one driver wins the first 19 races and another driver finishes 2nd 19 times, he's only 19 points behind with one race to go. If the driver who wins 19 times is the first retirement and the driver who has 19 2nd places wins, he wins the title.

NASCAR was being broadcast on a channel called Open Access 3 here in the UK a while back...

Not I as I am too far away. But you can bet I'll be at the PIR spring race. 👍

I would love to see a flat/short track race. Unfortunately, I'm too far from those. The only tracks I'll drive to are, Talladega, Atlanta, Lowe's, Homestead and Darlington. But I guess that makes Bristol within the same realm as going all the way to Talladega. I guess Martinsville is within the same area as Lowe's and Bristol... Just such a drive though.

So does anyone know what the UK TV deal for the 2011 Sprint Cup is? And also, what time is the Daytona 500 in GMT (time here in britain?) Possibly about 5pm?

I'm certainly within driving distance of Las Vegas and Fontana as well, just don't make enough money to travel that far at the moment.

My parents wanted to go to the Las Vegas spring race but they kinda waited too long to do anything and now aren't going. :(

It seems Fox Sports chairman David Hill believes NASCAR races need to be shortened to fit into a three hour broadcast window.

Hill said the length of the races is one of problems contributing to NASCAR's shrinking TV ratings.

Not really, but shorter races would be nice. Nationwide length 250-300 milers. That said Daytona, Talladega, Bristol, Martinsville, Richmond, Darlington and Lowes should have 500 mile races. JMO.

Remember NSCS is an endurance series. trucks and nationwide are shorter dash races. I just vote they throw more phantom cautions to spice it up every so often because some tracks like fontana get really boring after 10 laps.
