Don't get me wrong, I love the strategy aspects - in fact, that's what pulled me into the series in the first place - but in "true" endurance-racing, as in every motorsport, you have to be fastest over the distance: The only difference is what distance. But when you can pull a 5-6 seconds advantage (which is massive on an oval) on every green period, only to lose that every time some backmarker crashes out, it turns it back into a series of short sprints - especially since these cautions only become more often near the end, when everyone pushes hard.

My gripe isn't with luck, and it's obvious that you need equipment, good pits and all - my gripe is that all that's important about the race gravitates towards the end of it. You can pit under green early on and recover, you can spin and pit for repairs early on and recover, lose a lugnut early on and recover - all three of those happened during the Sprint race at Darlington, they went a lap down or more and then recovered into the top ten thanks to cautions. However, if you had the same problems in the latter stages of the race, it'll put you out of contention immediately.

To put it more simply: My "peeve" with NASCAR is that you can run the first half badly and recover to win, but you can't afford a single mistake (or misfortune) in the latter stages, even if you ran three quarters of the race absolutely perfect.

A simple fix to this would be to shorten the races

I can sit through the entire 24 hours of lemans so a 4 hour NASCAR race is nothing to me, but to alot of people thats too long

A writer at CBS sports line said no race, except for the Daytona 500, coke 600, and Brickyard 400 should last longer then 3 hours

and on a different note, the season is too long

Instead of 26 normal races and 10 chase races, it should be 20 normal races and 10 chase races.

Also on another note, the points payed out between first and second needs to be increase.

In Formula 1 the winning drivers receives 20% more points then the 2nd place driver

In NASCAR the winning driver receives 12% more points then the 2nd place driver

Tony Stewart becomes the first owner/driver to win a race since Ricky Rudd in 1999 after taking the checkers at Pocono

Boy you can save alot of fuel in stock cars

After watching the telementary I think i know why

with openwheel cars and over racecars on roadcourses you can short shift to try and save fuel but that's only about 1-2 thousand rpm lower on average. For example if your redline is 10,000 and you short shift at 8,5000 your car will probably drop to 7,000, then you go back up to 8,500 and short shift again.

That's a range of 3,000 rpm, from 7,000 to 10,000 where you would normally shift.

In
tony stewart's
onboard he was dropping all the way down to 2,500 rpm in the corners, when the car redlines at 9,200. That's a difference of 7,000 RPM

So now i see why you can save so much fuel in a COT. and you can cut the engine off

Couldn't you accomplish the same thing in an open wheel car by dropping it into neutral and letting it coast?

Congratulations Tony Stewart for your win at Pocano.
Although I did not see this race,I understand he came from the last starting position to get this one.

Good job Tony.

I guess so.

From what I've seen today there I think there will be a ton of guys going for it at the end of future races if they think they are 2 or 3 laps short on fuel

How about Marcos Ambrose

6th place finish, 18th in points

Not bad for what really is his rookie season in Sprint Cup

Someone give him a better ride

I swear to god if I ever met Kyle Petty in real life I'd punch him in the neck. It's tough to listen to a guy who hasn't won a race since 1995...

Dale Jr. did something similar to that last year at Michigan, except under caution.

I would have to agree with you, they should put Larry McReynolds in the booth with Weber and Wally Dallenbach and leave Petty on the set.

I've never seen Pocono before, and it sorta looks like a flat Darlington. Little banking, narrow track, high speeds. 👍

Yeah its great, and when you get to run it on a game you will see how tough it is. All 3 turns vastly different. Its a real challenge to do a great lap there.

Here's my thing. People talk about how Pocono is boring. To me, at least this is a different kind of oval. Not any of the so-called cookie cutter ovals. What's common with me on message boards is that I hate something, but someone's always there ready to defend it saying that "at least it's different." Well, that's the stand I take on this course. Loudon is more boring than Pocono.

On ESPN's "Pardon the Interruption," Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon talked about Kyle Busch's celebration at Nashville. You know... is it fair or foul to trash a trophy you just won. I can understand that celebration. You got a guitar... and you smash the daylights out of it when you're done. I think it was Rowdy Busch being... rowdy. It was a pretty cool celebration from what I saw. This, from a guy who isn't crazy about rock music. It was awesome for Kyle Busch to have that wicked celebration.

Good luck to the NASCAR teams competing at Michigan this weekend. I've always liked that oval in Brooklyn, Michigan.

People were absolutely going nuts over it. I'm not surprised really given how last year (and during the race) he promised he was gonna do so what did they expect? Even more funnier is that Sam Bass, the guy that painted it, didn't seem to have a problem. I agree with you, its Kyle Busch so you can't say you didn't see it coming.

Just saw this on Jayski

Source: drug named that triggered positive test of Mayfield: Jeremy Mayfield tested positive for methamphetamine during a random drug screening May 1 at Richmond International Raceway, ESPN The Magazine has learned from two independent sources. In court documents filed in the past two weeks (Mayfield sought a temporary restraining in order to return to the track; NASCAR countersued), it was revealed that Mayfield had admitted ingesting a double dosage of Claritin-D [note: which contains pseudoephedrine which is used in the illicit manufacture of methamphetamine], an allergy medication, and the prescription drug Adderall XR immediately prior to the Richmond drug test conducted for NASCAR.(full story at ESPN the Magazine)(6-9-2009)

Hopefully he gets help, meth is a very dangerous drug.

In a interview I saw with him,Kyle said the reason he was trying to do this to be able to give each one of his crew members a piece of the trophy. When it did not break the way he wanted it to,he took it back to the shop, put it in a bandsaw, cut it up,autographed every piece, then gave each member of his crew a piece of it.

In the meantime,he did order 2 more trophy's of which he did pay for himself.1 for himself, and 1 for his crewchief.

I saw where Jeremy is trying to sue Nacar over this...........good luck on that !!!!!

I think that was just him trying to spin it as much in his favor until the news was out.

Also, Petty may switch to Toyota. If this happens I think Dodge will just pull out like they did in the Truck series. I don't see the point for them to stay in if they are only going to have 1 competitive car.

I'm wondering exactly what Nascar is gonna get out of contersueing and the fact that not only did they wait for a long time to tell everyone makes me wonder if NASCAR themselves have made a big mistake. How do we know mayfield is making this a bigger deal then it is? What if he knows something that NASCAR doesn't want us to know? Their questionable calls as of late (minus the Double file restarts) don't ease my suspicions any further.

Northstar
Also, I saw in my paper today that Petty may switch to Toyota, I will try to find an article online.
Uh-oh, looks like Dodge may not be giving Petty the results he wants. Looks like Penske will be the only team left with Dodge (assuming he doesn't decide he wants to switch too).

Dodge didn't pull out of the truck series, they just ceased their factory backing because there was only 1 team that was going to run Dodge this year and they didn't see a point in funding just the one team in their current financial situation.

What I think will happen is either Penske and RPM form a technical alliance (like Hendrick and Stewart-Hass deal) so all the teams can stick with Dodge and run the same engine, regardless if Chrysler pulls the plug on factory support or not.

Or RPM could use a little logic and put Allmendinger in the 19, give Sadler the boot and run 3 teams that can run the full race, instead of two or three teams running the full race and having the other one doing the 'ol start 'n park.

Switching manufacturers would only be a final option, and if it did happen, it would probably have to wait until season's end so the team isn't bombarded to get engines ordered/built for all the cars with enough spares for testing and as backups.

Petty, Braun teaming up for five Nationwide races

NASCAR.com
Richard Petty Motorsports will partner with Braun Racing to compete in five Nationwide Series races this season.

The Petty team competed full-time in the series until this season when it chose to run a fourth Sprint Cup Series team. Team officials said the agreement with Braun Racing makes a successful return to the series more likely.

Elliott Sadler will drive on June 27 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Kasey Kahne will drive the other four races:
• July 3 at Daytona
• Aug. 21 at Bristol
• Sept. 5 at Atlanta
• Oct. 16 at Charlotte

Well guys, it appears closer to a Manufacterer switch. I don't see Braun running Dodges in Nationwide anytime soon.

I was tuning in and out of today's race, Jimmie Johnson made it a snorer for the first 3/4 of the race. But the last caution made things real interesting with fuel strategy, and the last 5 laps were real nailbiters!

Jimmie Johnson and Greg Biffle battled for the lead until Johnson ran out of fuel coming to the white flag, Biffle takes the lead but runs out down the back stretch. Mark Martin, who had been saving fuel for the last 40 laps blows by Biffle and took the checkers, still under power!

Lol @ the spolier text...... the INFOLINKS popups, that highlight the words... right now, the spoiler text just reads **** ******, the race winner!!! lol

+1 on Montoya's 6th place finish. He's in contention to make the chase now. He keeps surprising me every weekend. I bet he's a contender for the win next week at Sonoma. :)

This was the very first NASCAR race I've ever watched

The 1993 Michigan 400

It made me a NASCAR and Mark Martin fan

But what's intersting about the race is the fact Mark Martin didn't win. He dominated the race but lost because he had to make pitstop for a splash of fuel late in the race.

Seeing Mark Martin win a fuel race today at Michigan felt like Mark got what he deserved 16 years ago

Quickly...

* Congratulations to Texas' own Colin Braun in NASCAR Trucks at Michigan.
* Congratulations to Joey Lagano at Kentucky in NASCAR Nationwide.
* Congratulations to Mark Martin in NASCAR Sprint Cup at Michigan.

Up next is one of the more interesting weekends for me- Infineon Raceway. Only that the NASCAR Trucks and Nationwide Series are too good to race road courses this weekend. Shame. Or at least I know the trucks will be in Milwaukee on Friday night.
