I've been a Martin fan for 18 years now, I'm hoping he can slay the giant that is Johnson and save NASCAR from a 4-peat that can only hurt the sport

I disagree.

It's not that I'm hoping Martin won't win, it's just that I think it would be equally as great to see Martin win his first championship as it would be to see JJ win his 4th consecutive.

If it goes Johnsons way he'll deserve it and it will be astonishing.. If Martin wins is I'll be happy, I've only been watching NASCAR 3 years, but I've got a lot of respect for the guy, and after the seasons early expectations for him, he's done an amazing job, and would also thoroughly deserve it...

.. that brings me to Montoya ... IF he gets there... all of the above times 10, because he's not in the best car on the grid and he hasn't been in the sport for 20 years, it would also be great for the sport and I would go freakin nuts.

I want either Martin or Montoya, or anyone who isn't Jimmie Johnson to win, I don't have a problem with the guy, but this is starting to get old.

+infinity. I hope he doesn't win another championship, it'd make NASCAR look even more boring than it's been lately. Although, Talladega and Martinsville will probably throw a monkey wrench into the thing... hopefully.

I said that last year, and look at a replay of the big one at Dega, and look closely, and Jimmie snakes his way straight through it, now I don't dislike Johnson, and I think he is a great driver, but I was pissed when he finished that race and all his competition didn't.

Okay, who wants to admit to the rain dance?

50% chance of rain during the race?????????

Damn that clint bowyer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Damn that mark martin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The pair of them went and ruining montoya's race!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To end the misery of one of the most boring seasons in Nascar history (except Spring race @ Talladega and July race @ Daytona), they should've just awarded Jimmie *mycrewchiefisacheatingbastard* Johnson his 4th straight championship last night. 👎 As crazy as that sounds, history has proven that once he gets the points lead, it's damn near impossible to wrestle the lead back. :grumpy:

We're now five races through the Chase. Now, we're having a better idea as to who's still in it and who will have to try again next season. So... who are all OUT of the Chase at this point?

Ask after Talladega.

Well, would you rather have a chase points system where a Jimmy Johnson can be 500 points behind in the "regular" season but turn it on for the last 10 races and win the championship,

Or would you rather have a F1 scenario where a trick diffuser earns a mediocre team/driver a massive championship lead early but towards the end of the season the championship leading driver who built up such a huge lead runs mid pack for the last 10 or so races and still wins the title

Both scenarios suck, but that happens sometimes.

Jimmy Johnson wont be able to turn it on like this forever and at some point there will be an exciting chase

Mark Martin was at no more fault then Montoya. The leader led them slow, someone tried to jump the start, dont remember who, but they mistimed it, hit the brakes, montoya stopped and martin got into him.

On another note, looks like NASCAR listened to the fans media whatever and cooled it with the debri flags

Everything in your post is wrong.

  1. That was one of the better races of the year, Lowe's is almost always a good race, lots of side by side racing, pit strategy, wrecks, etc.
  2. Knaus isn't a cheating bastard, he just knows how to find loopholes in the rules and use them to his advantage. He's one of the few crew chiefs in this day who isn't afraid to fight the rulebook.
  3. The championship battle isn't over yet, 90 points sounds like a lot, but he can easily lose it all in the next 2 races and find himself in a big hole instead of a big lead.

This.

Somebody will beat Johnson someday, it could be this year, it could be 5 years from now, but he won't win the next 30 championships.

I agree, I don't want to see Johnson win a fourth title in a row. On the other hand, it's not luck, they are just that good when it comes to the chase and point racing all year to be in the position to make the chase.

I expect JJ will win MANY more championships in his career, if he wins this year, I have no doubt he will be contending with Earnhardt and Petty for 7+ titles. I think it does somewhat hurt the sport, but it's not the 48 team or JJ's fault. Some group of people just need to step up and show that they are better. It will happen eventually. Kyle Busch could have done it last year, he choked in the chase though and that's where it really mattered.

I'm not a 48 team fan, it's boring to watch them constantly whipping everyone in the chase, but I can't really have anything against them for being good, it will just be that much sweeter for whoever can dethrone them.

If this Lowe's dominance keeps happening, does anyone think the chase format will be modified? Or a modified old points system brought back? I'd like the latter of the two.

I think if NASCAR cut back on the points awarded (instead of 190 for the winner, maybe half of that, which is 95) it wouldn't let the points leader get out to too big a lead unless he did something like Jenson Button this year.

How about score the chase and non chase drivers separately?

For example whoever finishes the highest of the chase drivers gets 185 "1st" place points, and whoever finishes worst of the 12 chase drivers gets 127 12th place points.

Currently Jimmy Johnson can win the race and get 185 points while a chase driver can get a flat tire and finish 42nd and only acquire 37 points, basically ending his hopes at a title.

Shouldn't the chase drivers be scored depending how how they rank among each other and not how they rank among the non chase drivers?

With the current system and so many good teams one flat tire at the wrong time can destroy your title hopes.

Also wins should be worth more to start the chase. Not sure why Mark Martin, who led the series in wins, only starts a puny 50 points (50 points = puny ten positions on the track) ahead of montoya in the chase even though Montoya didn't win at all this year.

Were you watching the same race I was? Because I saw a lot of the same "follow the leader" racing that has plagued this entire season. Sure the restarts were good, then it quickly strung out again within 3-4 laps. Also, to quote Richard Petty: "The race should be won on the race track, not in the pits." Chad Knaus was caught for cheating multiple times in the past. Most people know that he is still "pushing the boundaries", it's just that Nascar lets him get away with it unless the possible rules infraction is outside the Chase part of the season.

That could work, the way the points are reset once the chase begins it makes it impossible to finish worse than 12th.

Same question to you, that sounds like the race at California the week before.

Also, to quote Richard Petty: "The race should be won on the race track, not in the pits."

What does that have to do with anything?

Pit strategy has been part of NASCAR for a long time, it was a factor in several races where Petty didn't lap the field.

Chad Knaus was caught for cheating multiple times in the past. Most people know that he is still "pushing the boundaries", it's just that Nascar lets him get away with it unless the possible rules infraction is outside the Chase part of the season.

What?

It's NASCAR's new uptight rules that have gotten him caught, and to my knowledge they suspended and fined him the same as they did other crew chiefs that violated the same rules.

Off-topic of NASCAR racing, but Kyle Busch and Joey Lagano want to host Monday Night RAW. Just have to wonder if Rowdy Busch will complain about something on RAW this Monday.

Back ON topic. And... Martinsville is next. Martinsville has always been a crazy track. It's like you survive Martinsville rather than race it. Time to earn your money if you want to keep your Chase hopes alive.

I quite like this idea.

Here are some 2010 schemes, I like Johnson's new look.

Gordon should keep the Transformers look they had on last week, I really liked it. Plus it was funny when him and Newman were side by side for a while "LOL good versus evil" forget who said it, someone who was commentating the race.

You kidding, right?

He ain't kidding

When they announced it in the arena, Logano got cheered and Busch got hevy heat man

They are only doing it because they are going to be advertising WWE on their cars in Texas
