That's a spot-on post, FK, and quite demonstrates what most educated Americans would think. It is unfortunate that the freedom to express oneself, while being helped along by the various media, can have both its pros and cons; one only needs an internet connection today to spread maliciousness.
I'm of the opinion that, in general, New Yorkers would be quite thrilled to have a born and bred New Yorker win that title.
Where Nationalism comes to play in this, of course, is the fact that it is countries that are vying for this title. She assumes the new face of America - until the next face comes along, I suppose. But she also demonstrated all that America can do for an individual, irrespective of caste, creed, or race.
The rather loud (noisy internet, isn't it?
) naysayers only highlight the fact that bigotry is the lowest form of derision, and in fact, the most ignorant.
