I believe this is the new Amazon Racing game that Creative Director Craig Sullivan left Ghost to work on. Keep in mind its pre alpha footage.

DLC central with hacky voice over and enough overpriced content to lure fanboys. Also paid talent doesn't equal a quality product, especially when there's an amateur in charge. Amazon haven't a clue about creating a product, just buying and seling.

Craig Sullivan worked on Burnout Paradise, Hot Pursuit, NFS Rivals and NFS 2015. I wouldn't call him an amateur.
Neither was I. I was refering to Amazon in context of actually making something or directing a creative process. They're traders and processors, not founders and creators (with one exception). Odds are with Amazon at the wheel they'll want as much as they can get into the game for as little outlay to make as much as possible. Call me cynical, but given what we have with the likes of GTS, Forza 7, NFS etc, all new games have a lot to prove and all will need to be better than shovelware to turn a buck in the long term. Craig was hired for his talent and will doubtless put a lot of talent into the game, but he isn't in charge and it won't be his direction dictating the output imo.

I love the series, but not sure exactly how it would translate into an entertaining game. Not enough information to go on with this simple trailer. Will wait and see.... Interesting... thanks for sharing helvetica bold.... but little more than a blip on my radar until seeing more of the nuts 'n' bolts.

Under The Hood: Chalking Up Another Year

Not a new update, but it is mostly about rewarding players during the week:

New Abandoned Car

Next week’s Abandoned Car is one that you’d normally find cruising around the streets of Olympic City in Need for Speed: Underground – Rachel’s Nissan 350z. Get behind the wheel of one of the most iconic cars in the Need for Speed series, but remember, it can only be found in Fortune Valley for a limited time.

Double Rep

August 28 will be a Double REP day. Just picture the scene: you’re flying around the streets of Fortune Valley in your new Nissan 350z, earning double REP as you tear in and out of traffic. You own these streets.

Double Cash

August 29 is the time to earn yourself some cash, because we’ll be activating Double Cash for 24 hours. If you’ve had your eye on a brand-new set of wheels, or even multiple new rides, then don’t wait! Splash the cash and complete that dream garage.

Birthday Presents

August 31 is the big day, and we’re tearing up the traditional birthday playbook and giving you the gifts. Hit the streets of Fortune Valley that day and receive five Premium Shipments. But wait, there’s more!

From August 31 – September 3, play Need for Speed Payback and you’ll receive a special vanity item: the Firework Animated Underglow. Make that sweet ride even sweeter.

The post ends with what is essentially "No more significant content updates for Payback, see you in 2019!"

Next year, we’ll be back and celebrating an even bigger milestone as the Need for Speed series turns a quarter of a century old. You can bet that birthday will be special. We’ll bring the cake.

Got a good run at the double money. Have all the cars in the racing category down to under 200k. I've all the million pounders across the board so I've just to mess with the racers to build the money for the others (a lot of solar runs then) :)

Is it more or do these new NFS titles don't have a long life time.. a year or so, and then people move on.

What metric are you using to determine "life time"? A game's life is as long as you make it... Unless it is an always-online game which has had its servers taken down (RIP NFS World).

Guys I remember when there was no such thing as DLC or updates beyond simple bug fixes. Then the gaming world sort of lost its mind with DLC's for everything... now we've come to expect it. Ten years ago if a person told you that a NFS game would get content updates for a year after release they would think you were crazy. Sure I wish they would go even longer, but I'm appreciative of what we've already gotten.

Haha, I should've been more specific. Its been almost a year since its release, and people got rather bored of it really quickly and shelved it. Its not like the old NFS titles, where you could play for hours and not get bored.

I think nostalgia is playing a key role in that. Look at Need For Speed 2015; within the 12 month period of the game's launch, the negative sentiment outweighed the positive and the general feeling was that people grew bored of the game fast. Fast forward to the present day and you hear more about people appreciating NFS 2015 much more than they did when the game was receiving post-release support.

However, I am not going to deny the reason for that is because those who disliked the game have moved on from discussing it, leaving only those who enjoyed the game to sing its praises.

Same thing probably happened with the Black Box era titles; there must have been NFS purists who disapproved the lack of open roads, supercars and police when the Underground series was launched. Now that the critics don't share their disdain towards the game anymore, the only time you hear about that era of games is when people are sharing fond memories of it.

You'll find that trend with most games. Between casuals and nit pickers those who buy games en mass will have their fun and move on, but those who savour a product usually keep it going for long after the next new thing arrives. Look at gta online and world of warcraft. Titles long past prime, but still have their fans and still gaining updates.

Has EA already moved on from this game? I just bought it not too long ago and it seems I came right after the last update. It seems as if EA has already abandoned Payback and moved on to the next title..

Pity, cause Payback to me was VERY enjoyable but left a lot to be desired tbh. I feel they're getting closer to making that ideal NFS game that hits home on all bases.. One thing I hope that doesn't return is speed cards.. Probably the DUMBEST idea Ghost had for the game.. It's like they tried to throw an mmorpg type of grinding tactic in the game.. It failed miserably.

One thing I did like however, was the derelicts. I hope that makes a return. But instead of having it being designated cars you find one time, it'd be dope if they would randomly scatter the parts of an abandoned car or 2 across the map. The car could be a 67' mustang, or an old Civic that someone scrapped or maybe even an old Porsche from a rich tycoon who went bankrupt.. Idk, just wishful thinking I guess.

Is there any way to unlock everything or at least parts and cars in the game without much effort? A cheat, glitch or something, because I dont wanna invest my time to play the game, I just wanna mod cars, dont care for gameplay.

Yeah, other than a few abandoned cars that have yet to be released, Payback is done. I agree with you however that they are on the right track. The speed cards was a strange decision indeed, although I'm in the minority who actually didn't mind them so much. I hope they keep the abandoned cars thing going, and I even hope they still include off-road in the next one if the setting permits... I greatly enjoyed the variety, not just in racing but in customization opportunities.

I just picked this game up during the black Friday sale, after resisting to purchase it at launch after the last game. And I must say, I am really enjoying this, the cars do feel better to handle, but still have some improvements to be made. Not a fan of the speedcards though, I prefer a tuning system like the old gran Turismo's. The overall gameplay, customisations, missions, especially finding the derelicts, its a lot more enjoyable that the previous game. Hopefully they keep improving, and add a dynamic weather system for the next game.

Okay so I saw this game for about $20 at Wal Mart recently and I have considered getting it for a while now, however I have one burning question to ask. How is the collision detection in this game, like is it as easy to crash in this game as the previous one?

While I liked NFS2015, the constant crashes was one of my biggest problems with the game.

Personally, I find it far easier to get the hang of the physics in Payback than 2015. For the most part, crabwalking is not an issue in Payback (though you can still trigger it if you have a collision while drifting) which means the walls don't have the magnetic properties they had in the previous game.

With that said, brake-to-drift is still the preferred handling method in Payback.:indiff:

Okay, it's good to know the physics are better, but what about when you close to a wall? Is it one those games where sometimes if you some much as tap a wall, it registers as a wreck? NFS2015 and NFSMW2012 had this problem and most of the time it felt like I couldn't get anywhere near a wall without crashing and it annoyed the crap out of me.

I'm pretty sure the wall impact physics are pretty similar to those games (in the sense crashing into a wall will prompt a cutscene), but this hasn't been an issue for me personally.

I would say no - the walls do not suck you in like they did in 2015. The physics are much better, despite the aforementioned "brake to drift." Driving in Payback is actually fun - at least to me.

Worth noting that while driving in Payback is improved, it is still fundamentally based on the handling model from 2015 and you will encounter the same issues as that game, although to a lesser extent.

The game overall is a two steps forward, one step back sort of dealio.

Handling and overall customization is improved, but stuff like upgrading is very rear-backwards.
