That was just an example that it was already done back in '94 on (now) ridiculously slow machines.
If they really started from scratch, they should've thought about it, with all implications it brings...being the real driving simulator and all.;) It's 2010, it's a must in my book.
btw. I think they're gonna be in, judging by his response "not to worry about 'em".

I doubt it. Some missing things are not going to suddenly appear in the final game IMO. Things that are a part of the structure of the game, i think they are hard to implement at ladt second.

I know that skidmarks, 3D trees, reverse lights are not really part of the bulk of the game engine, but i think those details (kind of like the revamped 3D curbs) would already showed up in videos if they were to make it into the final game.

I hope i'm wrong.

I hope you're wrong too, but c'mon, they gotta have some hidden features to surprise us when it's released!:sly: (and this is one feature which is easily turned on/off)

Skid marks? Really? Sure they are nice and all but for last minute surprises I'd rather have something far more interesting. Skid marks are "meh, ok then".

Well, I think they should be(already are in about every other game)one of the basic features which aren't supposed to excite you that much, but also, they should be done properly, not just cosmetically(as discussed up there(grip levels etc)) and the same goes for damage for example...

I think if its going to have drifting we got to have skid marks, why put in a drifting mode and not have skid marks?

skid marks in real life are a lot less frequent and less visible than they are in games
I don't miss it, nor do I notice it real life

That may be so, but they are there in real life, and there is really no excuse for not having them simulated accurately (at least visually, and not persistently) in GT5.

skid marks are a waste of computer power its something you have when you have everything else.
oh and isnt this thread about the demo not about skid marks:sly:

Very true, it's a bit off-topic, but I still haven't read anywhere a convincing argument for why skid marks should not be in the game.

I don't agree, skid marks can be seen even in F1 races on heavy braking or some big correction in corners, means a lot for replays.
GT lets you feel like your car is hovering above track, visually i mean.
I think that they must do some terrain marks for rally this time and by doing that they can also do it for asphalt.

In your(irrelevant) opinion.(since they exist IRL and are thus featured in practically every driving game)

ok i give you this choice
an extra car
skidmarks
which would you choose? im not saying they shouldnt be in the game im saying there is only so much a ps3 can handle and the remaining computer power should be spent better.

Personally i would like skidmarks to be included, not because i couldn't live without, but at least for replay value as a nice real life replication but not essential to gameplay ( at least not for me, unless it would actually affect the track ).
Reverse lights however ( although a nice detail ) would only slightly add to gameplay if GT were an open map game like GTA, not mainly driving on circuits.
I however do hope for functioning windscreen wipers if we get dynamic or even static weather, it would add something to the gameplay if you're like me using interior view all the time.
What was the topic anyway? ;)

Btw, not trying to single out one aspect to be more important but it is the total combination of all these little aspects which we can only hope will be included, important or not.

Firstly, there will be over 1000 cars, so I guess you know my answer, but your question is wrong too. It's not that kind of a bargain, it's not cars vs skidmarks. Skidmarks just have to be programed competently and all they are, are small textures(can even be procedural) which take small amount of memory.
btw. Haven't you noticed,on the previous page, video of a 16 year old game featuring skidmarks, and we used to play that on computers that are weaker than your average mobile phone of today!?

I would like them to affect the track, but even without it, they are useful for determining if you locked your wheels under braking, or seeing drifting driving lines made by other cars, or analyzing braking points, or being a proof someone skidded off the track and whatnot...and in the end, there's just something satisfying about making a nice burnout or hooning about now and then!:D:dopey:👍 ...and ultimately, that's just what happens in real life and it's not like it's something unnoticeable!!💡
p.s. ...and let's not forget smoke that disappears after 2 seconds!👎

Because there's no such argument, skidmarks are part of motorsporting too, however, this is not the focus of GT5, driving physics, graphics and damage are being improved, unfortunately there's no available time for developing decent skidmarks in this game.

Honestly, it's really weird to have a drifiting mode without skidmarks. Kaz already stated "skidmarks should be nothing of concern", this isn't a big no if you take it literally. ;)

Also, he said "We took the art of drifting very seriously" (Powersliding your car translates into a big load of effort on the tires, so it should leave skidmarks in a accurate simulation), I'm not intending to speculate anything, but his comments always allow you to think what he's really trying to say, despite of Sony's policy regarding info on the game.

Completely unrealistic smoke and nonexistent skidmarks. In a word - Clinical.

Real.

p.s. I interpret KY's comment as in, it's not a thing to worry about, skidmarks will be in, but are just a part of the bigger experience, so he doesn't bring them up as a feature. Something along those lines. I hope I'm right in the end!:P

Hope you're right, could however also be interpreted as don't worry for that sort of irrelevant nonsense, everybody will be blown away by the full content and forget about skidmarks, as i can't be bothered to seriously consider implementing them in my precious game.;)

Some of our readers would like to know about in-game weather changes and skidmarks. Will they be included?

I'm hoping our players won't be caught up with minor details. If they pick at every little thing, nobody will be satisfied. It's the overall evolution that will impress. Skidmarks should be of no concern. (He says with a laugh).

In context to the "won't be caught up with minor details" and "pick at every little thing" I interpret this as there are NO skidmarks.

Because out of the 50 million other features introduced, this one should be relatively simple. I don't know if they had problems or KY is simply being stubborn but this is something that should be considered.

How does it impact how fun the game is to play in any way, shape or form? It's black lines on the ground.

It helps with the racing line, seeing where others went off and brake locking in certain corners.

You have a point there, but would you really like the game less if it didn't have them? I'd like to have them, but they aren't included, I don't really care. This isn't as big of a deal as something like damage was.

It happens in reality, it should happen in "the ultimate driving simulator"

By that rationale, the game should also kill you when you have a high speed crash.

I'm not hugely bothered. But if it's as simple as it looks then there is no reason not for it to be in. I will be a little disappointed but after a few hours of gameplay I expect I couldn't care less.
