New McLaren Super Car: No Longer Just a Rumor

A part of me tingled in the inside when I read the car will be twin-turbocharged. This makes it an up over the F458 and the Gallardo. I'm sure the Top Gear guys will really love this car.

It looks really business like much like the F458, only with a more serious engine.;)

The rear looks much better than the F458, though I must ask, are those images above is what the actual production car will look like?

Some things that stood out to me:

* The single-piece tub that makes up the basis of the car weighs only 174 lbs.

* Carbon ceramic brakes? Nope. Too heavy.

* The 3.8L twin-turbocharged V8 should be making 600 BHP. Yikes. Most of the torque available at 2,000 RPM? Double Yikes.

* New fancy dual-clutch gearbox lets you "pre-select" gears by squeezing the stick in any direction, before going full force into the next cog. Interesting.

* Anticipated price tag? £160,000. Roughly $265K USD. Interesting Double Yikes.

I love it, despite knowing (relatively) nothing about it.

Wow, whoever did the rendered speculation on the first page almost had it spot on!

I can't wait to hear the sound of a 3.8 twin turbo'd V8 at 8500 RPM!!!

This makes me happy. That'll surely help a bunch with the excruciatinly slow downshifts I can get in the GTI. Looks like McLaren has solved one of the DSG's weaknesses.

I really like the look of it. It isn't too flashy yet still looks like it knows what it's doing. I was talking to a friend about it right after I saw it and that's how long it took me to forget how it looked. and this from a car I thought looked quite nice.

It's actually the other way around.

Yea man. I was thinking that myself. I'm inclined to believe someone very close to the project leaked the image, and/or info themselves.

One, there is no stick, Brad. :P

Two, it's not so much pre-selecting, but more of warming the next gear in line up, so that the car puts down all its torque immediately following the gear change.

I just felt un-impressed by the whole look and design of it, however the actual numbers seem outstanding

It's a bit safe looking though isn't it? not as modern as i had hoped for. Not as nice as the F458 but still very nice indeed. 👍

Generic looking indeed, but it is very interesting technically wise.

Ohmygod.

McLaren have accidentally built a Ferrari!
Seriously, look at the main features of the car, they look remarkably similar.

The numbers look very nice though... Be interesting to see a comparison on track to the 458.

the look of the thing is a little on the dull side (the front looks generic Ferrari clone, while the back looks pretty good.) , though there are some interesting features The one piece carbon fibre tub for a start....

Rather sad but the one thing that really jumped out at me wast the touch sensitive door handles (I havent seen that before on a production car, and assuming it works reliably sounds a really good solution)

Right, gentlemen what'a we got?

*views pictures*

I see. Let us celebrate this beautiful piece of engineering and design, with the adding of chocolate to milk

Its a Ferrari wanna be,why could'nt they design there own car?
The specs look good ,but should have been more McClaren looking.

I disagree. It looks a lot like the F1, which incidentally Ferrari copied quite heavily with it's 360 Modena.

The front halves are very similar from the main vents pushed to the side, the headlight graphics are very similar, and mainly in the way the fenders run over the front wheels. There is a lot of similarity between them.

I do have to agree with what's going on with the orange car. It is just a little too generic. I wasn't expecting it to look like the F1, and Mclaren has only one single model from over a decade ago to build its styling language from, but it seems a couple years late to the party.

Styling wise I think it looks a bit ordinary... no match for the 458 IMO.

But I suspect it will turn out to be pretty amazing to drive and will set lap times to make the 458 and Gallardo wince.

stylistically...does nothing for me. Specs, though, are something to keep an eye on. I want to see this baby in MOTION.

I thought they would've gone out of their way to make sure they topped the F1's figures and re-establish themselves as the premier supercar maker in the world but instead of blowing everyone out of the water with a 270mph missile, they've given us this ultra-trackday special. Really, it's like they've made a 21st Century version of the Ferrari F40 which was amazing on the road or track. Small capacity V8 (3.8L is small these days!), Twin Turbo, lightweight, mid-engined....it's like that to me from all those angles.

Let's wait and see what the full figures (weight, exact power & torque, etc.) are before a judgement can be made...I'm staying on the fence on this one for a while longer. 👍

What? I dont see the copying.

Not to mention the whole roof/glass area.

I'm not saying it's a carbon copy, but you can't say that the 360's designer wasn't influenced by Peter Stevens F1 design. The 360 is closer looking to the F1 than it is the 355 that preceded it.

This was codenamed the P11, Mclaren in about 2 years are releasing the P12 which is loosely based on the P11. It will be completely re-engineered though and aiming to be a proper successor to the mclaren f1.

What? I dont see the copying.

Wait for it...

OMG, the side windows look the same. Somebody call the plagiarism police...

You all can have your fancy 458s, I'll be perfectly happy in the McLaren which IMO goes back to the days of simpler styling where nothing is offensive and everything flows together much easier. Plus I think it's a little easier on the eye.

Simple isn't always a bad thing, folks.

Video from Autocar

I like it even I see lots of design cue from other cars, but McLaren has managed to combine all of them nicely. It seems to be very proportional and well balanced, just like the legendary F1. Nice to see they build their engines in house, no longer supply from BMW or Mercedes.
