New Pagani Supercar - introducing the Pagani Huayra!

Pagani's British gearbox

We didn’t have room for it in the magazine in the end, but while trying to give you as many details as we could about the new Pagani Huayra, I went to see Xtrac, the firm responsible for its sequential manual gearbox.

Xtrac are legends in the transmission industry. Almost every car on the F1 grid uses its gearbox internals, it’s the exclusive gearbox supplier to the BTCC, cars with its gearboxes and diffs have won everything from Paris Dakar to Le Mans. They’re number one.

Hence why Pagani turned to them in 2008 to develop the gearbox for the Zonda R, and then a little later Pagani and Xtrac hooked up for the C9/Huayra project.

Xtrac is starting to branch out into road car gearboxes and has already developed a six-speed transmission for the Koenigsegg Agera, but the new Pagani uses a seven-speed sequential transverse gearbox with a bespoke casing made from aerospace grade aluminium alloy.

The whole assembly is remarkably compact, the idea being to keep the weight as far forward as possible, thus improving weight distribution and reducing the polar moment of inertia. According to Adrian Moore, Xtrac’s technical director, ‘there are four more main benefits [to the transverse packaging], it allows space for the exhaust, rear crash structure, underfloor diffuser and allows the designers more styling flexibility.’

As yet there’s no word on how fast it’ll change gear, but Xtrac admitted they have altered the gearing to allow the Huayra to hit 60mph in first gear. It will also have an auto function for when the driver prefers to loaf around.

Two cars have been testing with the gearbox since last June and at the end of January testing was being carried out at Nardo to calibrate the gearbox. We’ll let you know as soon as we have hard figures – and of course the all-important performance data.

I haven't seen many transmissions outside of cars of themselves, but that Xtrac unit is smaller than my friend's original Xbox.

A selction of 57 photos of Huayra and Zonda R gorgeousness

Also it has been leaked that the Huayra will cost € 825,000 plus taxes for the standard car...Customers will then have the option of upgrading the cars interior to the spec we see on the press photos and at the event (see pics below). We don’t have details on what the standard interior looks like but the car on display at the moment apparently features the upgraded option.

On top of this, Pagani will offer a titanium exhaust as an option giving the Huayra an extra 30-40hp. The final option available is a full carbon finish for € 90,000.

I find it funny how the Top Gear guys fail at pronouncing the car's name.:)

Though I admit I too fail at pronouncing the car's name.:guilty:

It's growing on me, despite three different paint finishes on the show car. The gaping mouth isn't as bad when you look at it from eye level instead of low press photo perspective.

Shotgun "Satin Champagne" as my new rapper name though.

If I can't it pronounce I'm just going to call it Zonda Part II: Pagani Strikes Back.

I'm just going to call it Zonda II, The Sequel.

I'm really liking the look of car, although the back end does remind me a bit of the Enzo.

My God, it does look amazing in the flesh. Good point about the front end too, it definitely looks better from eye level. Have to say I love the wheels and the interior is absolutely incredible!

Will be interesting to see a comparison between this and the Lamborghini Aventador 👍

Well, that looks to be at least a dozen times better looking than I had assumed. I'd be interested to see what the actual size of the vehicle is. I always seem to think they're huge, see them in person, and then scoff at how small they actually are.

Well I don't know what they were thinking when they thought lets show the public one in champaigne. Looks absolutely stunning in red as it would in any other decent colour.

That car is a slab of CF. Like others said, I changed my mind as it does looks really good at eye level... I would love to see it being driven to the hell!

I'm liking this car less the more I see it. I'm okay with the front from eye level, but now the rear of it just doesn't look that great in my opinion. Koenigsegg and Lamborghini win for style.

Some more pics of the new Huayra they've taken to Geneva, it looks much better in this colour rather than satin champagne. Can't wait to see one in bare carbon, Pagani only lets his top man lay the carbon when a customer orders it unpainted which gives some indication of the level of perfection he strives for when you see the quality of the "normal" carbon on it.

And I still can't get over how it looks like a Hot Wheels car with the generic looking chrome wheels and white letter tires. How much is Pirelli paying them to make sure everyone knows those are Pirellis?

What a fantastic car.

Of course, if the Zonda is anything to go by, this car can only get better and better.

Out of the selling price of the car, I wonder how much of it goes to cover the costs of the Carbotanium thing they developed.

I really really want to like the Huayra... I just can't get round that front end though.

I changed my mind about it, looks mad and shouty but in a elegant and refined way and stunning in red:

The front end design could use a little bit more attention, but all in all is very well proportioned. Think about an Aventador for example, the back end slightly resembles a Citroen GT or some concept cars we've seen around. Now look at the Huayra's back end, looks pretty much nothing else on the road and certainly better than the Zonda from that angle.

Stunning car, interior looks way better in black though.
