New Pagani Supercar - introducing the Pagani Huayra!

Actually... now that I think about it, it looks more like this:

Pagani Huayra on the road- evo magazine video diary

This car is bonkers and according to the article about it in the latest Evo magazine it is genuinely Veyron quick. The looks have divided people but there's no denying it has amazing presence and bucket loads of street theatre.

So then, the sound...I don't like it. It's contrasted by the Zonda starting up in the background at the start of the video which sounds amazing and then when the Huayra fires down the road it sounds like a Hoover on extra suck mode. Horacio describes the Zonda as a Le Mans racer and the Huayra as a jet plane taking off which is no doubt a phenomenal experience but cars like these are meant to sound like..well, a Zonda. Perhaps this is the price to pay for international homologation and current emission legislation.

Sounds like Darth Vader, I like it, not as much as I like the NA V12 of the Zonda but it is actually quite cool.

IT does resemble a Supra or Skyline drag car with an enormous turbo...but without the awesome BANGBANG antilag. and much lazier.

On second thought...

Detroit 12V71. That's what it sounds like.

It's a supercar, not your moms grocery getter that is isolated from everything that happens around it.

That is a pretty dumb comment, to be honest. Hopefully mine is at least half as dumb.
Most supercars are driven to the market to get some eggs and to stop at starbucks on the way back. You're telling me that they spend so much time and money on extravagant, luxurious, leather and carbon covered interiors that are supposed to make you feel like a million(2 mil) bucks, but skimp on sound deadening to make it sound like a gutted civic? Hell, the zr1 didn't sound half as obnoxious.

Yeah, instead there were squeaks and rattles that you'd expect from the Daewoo department of the company..

I really like the sound of it, I love an NA V12, but this engine sounds very intimidating, which is what you want from a car of this calibre.

Sorry, yes. Haven't you seen any videos where ZR1 has been driven on other than smooth surface? Such as the Nurburgring lap?

Youve never been in a corvette right? with the exhaust in quiet mode its hard to talk to the person next to you. On open mode dont even bother talking, may as well do hand signals at each other. Tire noise is horrible too.

Too expensive. Way to expensive for what it is. I suppose I could be convinced if the articulating aerodynamics help a lot more than I'm expecting.

Yes, I have, the most recent being a zr1. Road debris didn't sound like the car was being shot up from the bottom with BB guns. I'm sure some of the sound was exaggerated by the camera and what frequencies it picked up easier.

It's a boutique car. The price of the zonda was ridiculous in my opinion but people bought it for the exclusivity. I can only assume this car will be even more limited in numbers.

The original Zonda's weren't so expensive (C12 $320K, C12 S $350K) but I've read that the price increased as Mercedes stopped producing the V12 so any engines they supplied to Pagani were effectively one-offs and therefore had a hefty price tag. The later F, Cinque and "special" Zonda's started to get unbelievably expensive and although they were made with slightly more exotic carbon fibre and had uprated engines, gearboxes and running gear I find it had to understand how the price increased four fold to approx $1.5million for the last Zonda's. I think the Veyron changed peoples acceptance for million dollar cars and the Pagani's are extremely rare and very much boutique. It seems that there are plenty of people out there with the money to buy into these exclusive clubs, like the FXX programme, and be treated even more like royalty than the plebs who can only afford "normal" supercars.

The current Zonda's are more expensive than the Huayra so a lot of the orders taken for it so far are because it's the cheaper option! Also if Pagani can find the buyers the plan is to double the annual production with the Huayra over the Zonda.

With high hopes set for the US, our govt. has now decided now that the Huayra is not safe enough for the folks who have already bought one & awaiting their cars.

Feds block Pagani Huayra U.S. sales over air bags for kids

Today the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced it would not grant Pagani a waiver from safety rules requiring passenger-sensing air bags, halting the company from selling the six to 12 Huyaras at $1.1 million apiece it expected to deliver to wealthy U.S. fans annually. Pagani had been counting on the U.S. market — setting up a California dealership, hosting an unveiling and testing the Huayras on U.S. roads in western states.

Pagani had asked NHTSA for its pass back in 2008, and had argued that because it was a small company, it couldn't afford the $5.7 million for advanced air bags that change their deploying force based on the weight of the passenger. Without the exemption, Pagani said it would take until 2015 to make the Huayra comply. And it vowed that the carbon-fiber Huayra would meet or exceed every other U.S. safety rule — including traditional air bags.

Federal officials have granted several similar exemptions in previous years, including for the Tesla Roadster, but in the past year have signaled that the free passes are over. NHTSA said despite Pagani's carping, the company's own forecasts say it will earn about $7.5 million between 2011 and 2014 even if it can't sell cars in the United States. It also said the rest of the Huyara's safety features wouldn't make up for the lack of advanced air bags.

Delay is of 1 year according to Pagani.
It will be on sale in the US in 2013.

"Pagani spokeswoman Sanaz Bakhtiari said that the car’s US launch will be pushed back from 2012 to 2013, rather than be cancelled outright. "

Do you have a link/source for that, or did you pull that quote from your rear end?

Autocar article:

‘Advanced’ airbags are designed to protect children by sensing when a minor is in the car and applying a suitable airbag in the event of a crash.

Having failed to satisfy the NHTSA, the company was denied exemption from the legislation. According to the safety regulator, Pagani “didn't show that serious efforts had been made to comply” to standards.

Pagani has expressed strong interest in the US market, making sure that the Huayra complies to both European and US crash safety regulations.
Initially the car maker planned for US sales to be limited to five cars in the first year, with a forecast for up to 10 per year following a factory expansion.
