Two new PS3 models have been submitted to the FCC database carrying the model numbers CECH-3001A and CECH-3001B. Its expected that as well as a hard drive size increase they will have a totally new chip set and mobo revision which will probably be more efficient and also have new security measures to seal the root key hack.

Recently PS3 slim prices have been reduced to clear old stock and new dev kits have been released to developers. I guess Sony wants to keep people loyal and attract new users during the bad press.

OH MY GOSH OH MY GOSH OH MY GOSH OH MY GOSH! Win! Can it still really be called PS3 if it has completely different features and specs to the original? Also: Could I get a source please?

Chipsert/mobo revision, and the new root key security hardly mean "completely different". It will still have the same GPU/CPU configauration which will limit the capability to current PS3 models.

Just like motherboards for PC's, a new revision doesn't mean a totally different model, just a little more efficient.

Well it doesn't support other OS anymore and is still called PS3 ;)

Oh my. This is rather exciting, specially if they'll have the expansion port. If this is the case, I hope they hurry its development up!

I'm guessing then that the hard-drive could be 500gb (or maybe this version supports up to 1TB HDD?) and it'll be a tiny bit smaller, a tiny bit quieter and a tiny bit more efficient.

Also, what's with the new dev kits? Does this hint a RAM or CPU/GPU upgrade in terms of processing power?

Give us PS4 before 2014!
Give us GT6 bundled!
Give us SSD / smart cache for loading purposes!
Give us separate power supply outside the unit!
Give us streaming capability built in! (NAS function, etc)

They could do all this with just a revision. No need for PS4 until 360 gets upgraded.

We can hope! I've stuck with my Fatties for that reason.

A good reason why it won't happen is that it actually takes up a lot of space on the HD to run PS2 games. My last of the B/C 80 GB is still running very well though at almost 3 years.

Less heat/ make the PS3 smaller.

Even so, the PSU is not a major contributor of heat. I have replaced the thermal paste in my fat PS3 and almost all of the heat I felt before I changed the paste was gone. It's due to cheap thermal paste and too much being applied to where it's actually insulating heat inside the console. The only heat I felt was from the hard drive and the PSU and that was slightly warm.

The smaller a device is does not mean it is cooler. It just means that you are making parts sit closer to each other and reducing space for airflow. What would make the device cooler is that the you need to make the CPU and GPU chips smaller and/or better cooling solutions.

At the expense of making it considerably less practical to actually use.

Heat isn't a problem with the Slim in the first place anyways, nor are power supply failures. So it basically causes a bunch of problems without actually making anything better.

I don't think fat PS3's really had any major problems with the PSU that came with it. Of course a external power adapter would make it easier for the user. But what about a PSU made so that you can just pull out after removing a plastic panel? Of course this would mean that ordering a replacement PSU would be hard since it's specially made.

The biggest reason I would like an external psu is so if it ever failed you can just get a new one. Somehow I would feel better about it being like that
I don't think we should be hoping for Sony to intentionally compromise one of the PS3's advantages over the other two systems this generation under the pretense that if it breaks (which is already an unlikely occurrence for the PS3 slim anyways) it would be easier to fix.

Not the least of which being because it is easier to make a reliable internal PSU than it is to make a reliable external PSU, so all switching to an external PSU would do is make PSU failures more common.
