New television refresh rate advice please

I'm looking at upgrading my 10 year old 46" LED Samsung TV. My primary question concerns refresh rates. An in-store advisor told me that for gaming I should be aiming for a 100hz refresh rate, as opposed to 50hz which is on most of the lower end affordable models.

Can anyone tell me based on their own experience what difference I'll notice when playing Gt Sport, using a 50hz vs 100hz display?

Any other tv buying advice?

Unfortunately I'm restricted to a 49" or 50" size. Room size and shape won't allow for larger.

The PS4 doesn’t output a refresh rate over 60hz anyway so 100hz seems a bit useless unless you plan on hooking up a PC to it and playing games at 90 FPS+. Basically, with a 50hz refresh rate, the TV should switch over to 60hz when you connect the PS4 AFAIK so I wouldn’t worry too much about that. The only reason it’s 50hz to begin with is for the PAL market - the same TV in the US would be 60hz I believe.

So to sum up: no difference. Both will simply output at 60hz when connected to your PS4 (well, the 100hz TV might use the ‘TruMotion” tech if it’s an LG TV to attempt to interpolate the frames but this is turned off on the Game Mode setting anyway).

EDIT: This comment explains it a bit more in depth and might help you make your mind up a little easier!

Really? So even with the PS4 Pro, I gain no advantage in having a 100hz (or 120 if you're in the NTSC zone) display? Absolutely no gain?

If true, this opens and cheapens my options considerably. Lots of second hand units with 50hz displays available. I guess I might future proof myself for a PS5 though, if I go for a 100hz display...

No, the Pro is also limited to a 60hz output. And even if it wasn’t, it’d be of no benefit anyway besides when friends want to watch what you’re seeing while using the PSVR headset - no game out there goes over 60fps (besides VR titles of course) on PS4 so you wouldn’t see a difference. Basically, if your game is running at 90 FPS, you need at least a 90hz refresh rate to actually see the 90 FPS - but nothing on the system actually runs at anything higher than 60 FPS, therefore the only thing you’d see with a 100hz TV is a lot of interpolated frames if the TV has a feature where it does this to “simulate” higher refresh rates - even then you’d want to turn it off since all post processing effects add some amount of input lag, which you want to keep to an absolute minimum when gaming. ESPECIALLY in a game like GTS, where timing is everything.

EDIT: Just saw your point about future proofing; it’s a good thing to consider actually, especially when we’re on the brink of the ninth generation consoles. A new TV is a new TV, it costs a good bit of money and you don’t wanna be buying two tellys one after the other, so to speak, all because the PS5 supports higher refresh rates (depending on the hardware you might even see 1080p90 and 4K60 although in all honesty this may be unlikely - again, it depends what they put in the system). But as it stands, for the PS4, you wouldn’t be getting any benefits from anything past 60hz.

Pretty sure all modern TVs are at least 60hz and not 50, and if you want to play PS4/PS4 pro with it, you should not need more than that because both consoles run at 60
Those tvs with very high MHz rate are all gimmicks, as the thing that matters is the video output, if you always watch regular content at 60FPS its nonsense to have a tv with lots of Mhz

Definitely don't use any 100hz or 120hz mode. Some tvs come with frame interpolation out of the box, that adds a lot of lag. The only things important for TVs to use for gaming are, does it have a game mode and what is the display lag. If it has a game mode the display lag is probably withing range. If it doesn't better make sure it's acceptable, ie, not north of 40ms. < 20 ms is better yet you'll get used to any display lag as long as it's not too high. (With frame interpolation you can be looking at 120ms display lag)

If you can clear more space on the wall, go for a bigger display. Better sense of speed through the display taking up more of your field of vision will improve your racing.

This is something I've been looking into, recently. My old Samsung plasma is getting a little long in the tooth.

So far, I'm pretty much settled on a 49 inch LG UK6300. I don't think it's very future proof, but still a good upgrade from what I have now. Great input lag for when I play Battlefield, too.

Running game mode is what you’ll use for games. If you don’t watch movies or shows then higher refresh will do nothing for you. Better motion typically comes with better contrast and color though which you would enjoy for sure. I’d swap the LG for a Samsung 7100 or Vizio E if it’s not too late. The LG has poor contrast.

Whatever store you went to don't go back. They have no idea what they are talking about.

In fairness, I don't think I mentioned PS4 to him. I just said gaming.
In not so fairness, all retail staff have pretty poor product knowledge and in the age of internet research, its foolish to rely solely on what they say in store.

To be fair to the store, dont rely on them for any advice. The only thing these stores are useful for it holding stock at the lowest possible price and attending to warranty concerns.

I do appreciate refresh rate but no console seems to care about anything but 60hz.

In light of this, the only thing you need to get is a 4k60 HDR set in the size you want.

HDR actually IS important and it does make the game look better.

I hadn't actually spotted the Samsung. Rtings seem to rate it quite well. Definitely not too late. Won't be making my purchase until the end of March.

One of my most favorite phrases, "long in the tooth". Its surprising how many people do not know what that means.

Check out the Samsung NU8000 model. That's the one I've decided on and ordered. Not sure which country you're in. It has different model number in different countries. NU8000 in the UK. Here in Germany its NU8049.

What ever you decide check rtings.com before you purchase. They have deep analysis of most TVs and list the pros and cons. I have a Sony 900E that is excellent for movies and gaming, at a native 120htz refresh rate. The higher the native refresh rate the less studder you with see when viewing fast moving images. Always use game mode for games as well if timing is a priority.

A decent mid level LED with good HDR will be miles better than an old Plasma. The HDR makes a huge difference, and is a better advancement than 4K imo. Sony 930 series features Dolby Vision if you want that as well, and the Sammy Qleds are decent as well.

This depends heavily on the implementation by the developer. RDR2 has fake HDR, but GT Sport's HDR is incredible. Same with Forza Horizon 4. You really get some beautiful colours, a wider range of course and they look more natural (even SDR looks pretty natural in GTS but HDR is the cherry on top of the cake).

HDR is a bigger game changer than 4k. Ratchet and Clank also has AMAZING HDR.

Get an old Plasma. Still the best unless you go OLED.

Most plasmas are 720p and very susceptible to burn in. More terrible advise.

A little out of my budget, unfortunately.

Yeah these things aren't cheap unfortunately. Mind you, I'm restricted to the 49" model due to space and room shape constraints, so its the cheapest of the available options for this NU8000 model. I wish I could fit the 55" model, but I'd also have to find another few hundred EUR for that so in some ways am happy that my hand was forced. This is the first "new" tv that I've ever purchased. TVs are the one one type of item that I've always found good to buy second hand because its normally just sitting stationary and doesn't get dropped or dunked like smaller devices.

I'm glad this topic came up. I'm planning to get another TV as well, and this thread has spurred me to look at specs more than I already was. We have room for a 65", and the NU8000 is definitely a contender. Can't wait to see what GTS, and other games look like on a good TV. We currently have a very early Vizio smart TV, which is slow to turn on, and will randomly shut off. Picture is decent, but looking forward to replacing it.

I love the HDR in GT sport, just wish my photos didn’t get the exposure jacked when uploaded to the server. They look perfect in my library but overexposed on the activity feed. My only gripe, guess they have to convert them for non HDR viewers.

Yeah it winds up looking like dookie, with or without HDR after the conversion. It's awful.
