I 100% agree that fighting should not be taken out of the game. It's as much a part of the game as beaning a guy in baseball. It doesn't happen every game. But, when it does it's usually for a reason. Teams don't carry "goons" like they used to but they still need a guy like a Marchant (Bruins) to stir things up. And, when they are stirred up, not being afraid to take or deliver a bag of knuckles to the chicklets.

I've watched hockey for over 40 years. I've seen some crazy stuff. From Milbury using a mans own shoe to beat him with. To Marty McSorrelly taking his stick to Donald Brasears head. (I was at that game).

In today's game, I am more concerned with the hits from behind than I am with an occasional fight. I've told my wife that we are gonna witness a death on the rink if the NHL doesn't do something. The game is so fast. The players are bigger and the equipment has grown as well. My old shin pads are pathetically thin and flimsy to my new ones.

Wow, sorry kinda went off there. I just stopped in because I just noticed GTPlanet has hockey talk and wanted to say hi. Hi! And, that Eichel returns to Beantown tonight. I hope we can make him hate his visit.

Let's Go Bruins!
Cheers,
Boston77

Hey, no problem. Welcome to this thread! We always can use more NHL fans. I am more like a casual fan myself. I have actually seen more hockey the past few years than I have all of my life since really being a sports fan. I do like the points you made in your post, Boston77.

You're a Bruins fan, Boston77. How do you like the season so far for your Bruins?

One of the issues with taking out fighting is that it brought in the advent of the blind hits and cheap shots. When fighting was still full scale, you didn't see nearly the amount of dangerous hits because the players policed themselves. If a guy tried to take out a star player on another team, he had to be ready because players would then try to knock out that player as payback.

The NHL is in a no win situation since it wants to remove fighting which in turn result in more dangerous hits, but at the same token, it will gain more fights it wants to avoid now if they start to crack down on the cheap shots. I personally say that the NHL should open up fighting again and start cracking down on the cheap shots. Yes, a guy can have his career ended in a fight, but in the current NHL, they are far more likely to have a career ending injury by being hit blindly when defenseless.

So far, the season has been brighter than I thought it would be. Heck, With all the off season activity surrounding us, we were not projected to make a playoff spot. If the core remains healthy I think we can make a deep run in the playoffs. It also helps that Montreal is playing pretty bad right now.

The young guys are really stepping up and playing smart, team hockey. That needs to continue if we wanna make a run.

I still think you need enforcers for your team in the case of someone who pulls the cheap shot or tries to take out somebody on your team. You are going to have someone who'll need to be an enforcer regardless- even if the players can enforce themselves. You have to have a player on your team saying, "if you're going to try to take out my teammates, I'm going to take YOU out. And you don't want THESE problems." Players are going to step up regardless with a blind shot or a cheap shot. Heck, players even get suspended by the NHL Department of Player Safety and stuff for illegal hits. Fighting is part of the game for all the insanity that goes on. Only thing ticky-tack to say about fighting in hockey is if you say something like, "think of the kids... we don't want to teach them about fighting and how to fight in a sport like hockey."

Good luck trying to legislate fighting in the NHL.

On a different note, here are some Finals as of the time of this post:

* Buffalo doubled up Boston 6-3 in Boston. Ouch.

* The Tampa Bay Lightning thunderstuck the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets 5-2.

* Defending home ice nice was the Washington Capitals, winning 3-1 against the Montreal Canadiens. The Habs have gone into a bit of a tail spin, methinks...

* Also defending home nicely was the Carolina Hurricanes winning 3-1 against the New Jersey Devils.

GAMES IN PROGRESS (as of this post):
* PIT at MIN: (3-1, PIT, 2nd Intermission)
* DAL at STL: (2-1, DAL, 2nd Intermission)
* DET at NSH: (2-2, 2nd Intermission)
* LA at ARI: (1-0, ARI, 1st Intermission)
* EDM at VAN (to be played later tonight)

Congratulations to the other winners as the NHL gets back to work after the Christmas Break.

While not exactly NHL related, I would like to offer congratulations to Shannon Szabados. Yesterday, she became the first woman netminder to record a shutout in a Men's pro league, with her Columbus Cottonmouths of the Southern Professional Hockey League winning over the Huntsville Havoc 3-0. She stopped all 33 shots that went her way.

Cool story, Sanji Himura. Nice. Thanks for sharing and congratulations to Shannon Szabados.

Only one game out of a nine-game day going on right now as of this post, and it's the Boston Bruins at the Ottawa Senators. Ottawa is currently up 1-0 at the end of the First Period.

Since John doesn't want to double post, here is a recap of last night's action:

- Ottawa defeats the Bruins 3-1 on a two goal effort from Mark Stone. The Sens scored in each of the three periods of the game, while Craig Anderson stopped 38 of 39 shots on goal.

- Kari Lehtonen records his first shutout of the season, stopping all of the Blues' 22 shots as Dallas cruises to a 3-0 win. Patrick Sharp and Jamie Benn both scored on the man advantage while Cody Eakin tacked on an empty netter.

- We needed Overtime to settle Arizona at Colorado, as the Coyotes won 2-1.

- Calgary put up a 4 spot in the second period to steal a game from Edmonton. They also put one up in the third for good measure for a 5-3 win. Karri Ramo was your winning netminder, stopping 28 of 31 shots on goal.

- The Blue Jackets were on the losing end of their game against the Panthers 3-2 thanks to a two goal effort from Aleksaner Barkov.

- Toronto was a 3-1 winner at New York Islanders.

- The Blackhawks were 2-1 losers against the Carolina Hurricanes.

- In a rare 5 on 3 that saw five Flyers in the penalty box, the Flyers were 4-2 losers at Anaheim.

- The other Pennsylvania team was also a loser this night, falling to Winnipeg 1-0.

I got a message from the NHL this AM that there will be a woman's all star hockey game at Gillete stadium on Dec 31st. First of its kind!
Hockey is for everyone.
You go girls (groan)

Cheers,
Boston77

So Gilette Stadium is going to get some extra action besides that Montreal at Boston game on New Year's Day? Sweet! I'm pretty sure folks like our RedDragon will like news like this in regards to women's hockey.

By the way, @Boston77 , what do you think about the Montreal at Boston match on New Year's Day? Looking forward to this game? Two Original Six teams that don't like each other too much.

[UPDATE] Oh, look... two of my good GTPlanet mates have a play date tonight. How cute! It's the Detroit Red Wings of our AnthonyD1993 playing at RedDragon's Minnesota Wild. Eastern Conference meets Western Conference in a nice Midwestern duel. This is just one game out of six tonight.

It's great that there is a Woman's game on New Years. Really excited about that! Hopefully it helps to spread the game and we see the NWHL grow :) Just need to have a Minnesota franchise and my goal will be even more awesome!

As far as tonight: Let's go Wild! They've been struggling a bit but hopefully we can get a nice win to get some momentum back

@JohnBM01, I'm excited anytime these two teams meet, but even more so for this game. Its outdoor, like old days. Huge crowd. Old time heroes. It's a special day for sure. I will be glued to my TV set.
Hopefully we can come out of our funk and play some good hockey.
It's true the teams don't like each other much. Hate is a better word. I have mad respect for the players. It's a tough game. But I do dislike Montreal, the hockey club, with every fiber of my being:mad: :sly:

Cheers,
Boston77

Six games on the card for Monday, but not all of them are Final. Here's a rundown of some of the ones that DID go final...

* Our GTPlanet inner-forum rivalry came down to AnthonyD1993's Detroit Red Wings being hosted by RedDragon's Minnesota Wild. In this one, the Wild won this little play date 3-1. It was Mikko Koivu who was the big name in this one as he accounted for two of the Wild's three goals. Charlie Coyle also knocked in a goal. The only Red Wing that found the back of the net was Pavel Datsyuk.

* Defense was overrated in Nashville as the New York Rangers and Nashville combined for eight goals. On the winning end of the 5-3 score was the Nashville Predators.

* Buffalo got blanked at home 2-0 by the Washington Capitals. The Sabres could do very little to shut down the Caps.

* Montreal played at Tampa Bay tonight, and neither regulation nor Overtime solved anything. So winning the shootout was Montreal by the score of 4-3.

As of the time of this post, games in progress:
* Colorado at San Jose: (3-2, COL, 2nd Intermission)
* Los Angeles at Vancouver (4-0, LA, 10:02 left in 3rd Period)

Congratulations to all winners on this Monday.

It's funny the Florida Panthers led the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference heading into last night's games. Now, Montreal is back on top in the Atlantic, followed by Florida and Detroit. It is the Washington Capitals that lead the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference ahead of the New York Rangers and the New York Islanders. Atop the food chain in the vicious Central Division of the Western Conference is the Dallas Stars. The top three in that division is Dallas, St. Louis, and Minnesota. The Los Angeles Kings lead the Pacific Division followed by Arizona and Vancouver.

Enjoy tonight's ten games. Among tonight's action: Dallas at Columbus, Ottawa at Boston, Nashville at St. Louis (game televised on NBCSN), and Detroit at Winnipeg.

The final Wednesday Night Rivalry of 2015 is tonight. On this five-game night in the NHL, the featured game for tonight involves the New York Rangers at the Tampa Bay Lightning. Here is tonight's lineup of games:

* TOR Maple Leafs at PIT Penguins
* BUF Sabres at WAS Capitals
* NJ Devils at OTT Senators
* NYR Rangers at TB Lightning (NBCSN Wednesday Night Rivalry)
* PHI Flyers at SJ Sharks (airing on NBCSN)

Enjoy this final Wednesday of 2015 with some hockey.

Final NHL rundown of mine for 2015. Here you go:

* The Carolina Hurricanes halted the Washington Capitals' winning streak by doubling up the Caps 4-2. Nine, and no more.

* At the Joe Louis Arena, the boys from MoTown have now lost three straight (or so I'm told). AnthonyD1993's Red Wings fell 5-2 to the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins. Detroit actually led 2-0 after one period. Afterwards, five unanswered goals. Ouch.

* RedDragon's Minnesota Wild paid a visit to St. Louis and... won! It was 3-1 in favor of Minnesota. Both teams scored only once in the 2nd Period, but Minnesota slapped on two goals to go ahead for good.

* 2-1 was the final in Buffalo, New York as the Sabres lost to the visiting New York Islanders.

* Overtime was needed in Denver to settle the score between Chicago and Colorado. It was Jonathan Toews who helped put the Chicago Blackhawks ahead for good 4-3 in Overtime to defeat the Colorado Avalanche.

* The Dallas Stars ain't afraid of no Predators. Nashville fell hard in Big D- 5-1 victory for the Stars.

* The Arizona Coyotes doubled up the Winnipeg Jets 4-2 in Phoenix.

* The Los Angeles Kings kept their cool and iced the Calgary Flames 4-1 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

* How did the other SoCal NHL team do? And how did the other Alberta NHL team do? The Anaheim Ducks defeated the Edmonton Oilers 1-0 in Edmonton.

Happy new year, GTPlaneteers! Congratulations to all winners. Get ready for the Winter Classic between Original Six foes Montreal and Boston on New Year's Day!

The 2016 Winter Classic is going on right now. I like the simple throwback uniforms by both teams. I kind of like the Montreal uniforms a bit more. This is just a good old NHL Original Six rivalry game. Montreal and Boston just don't like each other very much.

It's currently 1-0, Montreal at about 11:06 left in the 1st Period as of this post.

[UPDATE] Oh, and Happy New Year, hockey fans! :)

Besides the pain of my hang over, I had the added pain of watching that game. That was ugly! Tuukka saved our bacon. Should have been 10-1.
Cheers

I saw most of the 2016 Winter Classic. That game was pretty ugly if you're a Boston Bruins fan. I especially saw how feisty Montreal was on offense especially early in the 2nd Period. Montreal took care of business in such a great occasion.

That was yesterday, though. Let's talk about today! Here are some of today's results from this 12-game day...

* The Detroit Red Wings paid a visit to Buffalo, New York to meet the Sabres. It was the boys from MoTown who won 4-3.

* A little Southern hospitality was presented to the Minnesota Wild as they went down to Tampa Bay. Sixty minutes wasn't enough, and neither was five extre minutes. So the game went to a Shootout resulting in a 3-2 victory for the Tampa Bay Lightning.

* There was another Shootout on this day. This time, in Columbus. The Columbus Blue Jackets won 5-4 against the visiting Washington Capitals. Two pretty big recent wins for the Blue Jackets- taking down Dallas and now Washington.

* Speaking of the Dallas Stars... and coincidentally geting taken down, the Dallas Stars fell in Overtime 3-2 at the New Jersey Devils.

* The game between the New York Islanders at the Pittsburgh Penguins finished 5-2 in favor of Pittsburgh.

* Pennsylvania's other NHL team, the Philadelphia Flyers, took a loss at the Los Angeles Kings by a score of 2-1.

* It was a 4-1 beating St. Louis took as the Blues lost at the Toronto Maple Leafs.

* There was lots of lamp lightning and fist bumps from the Florida Panthers as they cruised to a 3-0 victory against the visiting New York Rangers.

Congratulations to all the other winners from Saturday.

I've been catching up on the '15-'16 Road to the NHL Winter Classic, watching the three one-hour episodes
released this year and it is truly refreshing to see how Claude Julien carries himself in the Boston dressing room.
He is one of very few coaches who is able to speak to his players without using foul language.
I haven't heard a single F-word from his mouth while giving his pep talks in between periods
and that is nice to see. Michel Therrien is classy in the Montreal dressing room too.

This is in heavy contrast to previous years when we've seen Laviolette, Tortorella and especially Boudreau
and Sutter talk to their players. Bruce Boudreau and Darryl Sutter are the worst in the league with terrible
use of the english language. It's F this and F that, every other word is an F-bomb even though it doesn't
fit in with the context of what they're trying to convey.

But hey Sutter and Boudreau have each coached their teams to championship wins so they have a successful
formula already that works for them. :)
I just wish they would tone down the language. I don't mind the F-word every now and then if it's used to
emphasize a pressing matter but it becomes a little embarrassing when Sutter and Boudreau jams in almost
ten F-bombs in only two sentences.

I think Liev Schreiber is a great narrator and he has built up quite a resume by now, narrating about the NHL
for many years.

Here's a video suggestion if you're a fan of old time hockey like I am. A Philly documentary that Liev narrated a couple
of years back;

This is the first full week of 2016. Tonight saw five games of NHL action. One was on NBCSN. Before this rundown, I learned something today through Wikipedia. The Colorado Avalanche used to be the Quebec Nordiques. The Avalanche have been around since 1995 even though the franchise began as the Nordiques back in 1972. I'll mention the Avs in this rundown, which begins... NOW!

* You can't win if you don't score. Only one goal was scored in this match as the Detroit Red Wings paid a visit to the New Jersey Devils. Detroit won 1-0. So the Red Wings have won back-to-back games after losing three straight.

* It took Overtime to settle Ottawa at St. Louis. And much to the dismay of kolio's Blues, it was the Senators on the winning end of the 3-2 Overtime final score.

* Now on to the Colorado Avalanche. The Denver boys did good. The Los Angeles Kings' five-game winning streak... well... got caught in an avalanche. Like, a 4-1 victory for the Avs.

* Detroit at New Jersey ended 1-0, and so did the Carolina Hurricanes at the Edmonton Oilers. Only this one needed Overtime, and that Overtime victory went to the Oilers.

Congratulations to all of Monday's winners, including the eventual winner of Arizona at Vancouver (currently 2-1, Arizona with 1:26 left in the 2nd Period).

Tuesday night hockey. Eight games were on, and here are some of the games that went Final:

* Madison Square Garden has had its share of boxing matches in its past. There was surely some rope-a-dope action at MSG tonight when the Dallas Stars visited the New York Rangers. Unfortunately, the dopes that got roped were the Stars, losing 6-2 in the bright lights of New York City. Ouch.

* RedDragon, as well as the rest of Wild Nation should be all smiles at the notion of another win. The Wild doubled up the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-2 in Columbus, OH. Get that man a hat! What man? Zach Parise! Why? He got himself a Hat Trick in this game. Granlund was the only other scorer for Minnesota.

* A game televised on NBC Sports Network saw Philadelphia host the Montreal Canadiens. The Flyers won 4-3 despite the Habs trying to make a game out of it late.

* The hot Florida Panthers are still hot after blowing out the Buffalo Sabres 5-1 in Buffalo. That's now, what... 10 straight wins for the Florida Panthers?

* Another loss for the Boston Bruins occured tonight as the B's fell 3-2 to the visiting Washington Capitals.

* Nothing was settled in 60 minutes in Pittsburgh, so Overtime was needed to settle the score. It was the Chicago Blackhawks getting the 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

* With the All-Star Game in Nashville, could the Nashville Predators put up an all-star performance against the visiting Winnipeg Jets? Nope. Those Jets won 4-1 at Nashville.

Congratulations to all winners on this Tuesday night, including the eventual winner of Tampa Bay at Calgary.

The NHL is ready to provide action for the first Wednesday of 2016. You ready? Five games are on tonight. Most importantly, we got some haters ready to set it off on NBCSN's Wednesday Night Rivalry. This is what your Wednesday night looks like:

* NJ Devils at MON Canadiens
* PIT Penguins at CHI Blackhawks (NBCSN Wednesday Night Rivalry)
* STL Blues at COL Avalanche
* TOR Maple Leafs at ANA Ducks
* CAR Hurricanes at VAN Canucks

Speaking of the Canucks, have you heard the story of Daniel Sedin losing four teeth but scoring a goal? I don't know if I'd want to be part of an impromptu meet-and-greet after getting four teeth knocked out, let alone just one! Just goes to show you how tough hockey players are.

Anyhow, go enjoy some Hump Day hockey tonight.

A game to be shown nationally on NBCSN tonight is the Philadelphia Flyers at the Minnesota Wild. Also in action tonight are AnthonyD1993's Detroit Red Wings playing a late game at the San Jose Sharks. Sanji Himura's Dallas Stars will host the Winnipeg Jets. These are among the seven games for tonight.

Go enjoy some Thursday Night hockey, and good luck to all of your teams.

Last night...

* Dallas needed a Shootout to put down the Winnipeg Jets 2-1 in Dallas.

* Florida keeps on rolling. They beat the Ottawa Senators in Canada's capital city 3-2.

* Zach Parise tied the game up for his Minnesota Wild 3-3 in the 3rd Period, but the Wild ultimately fell at home 4-3 in Overtime to the Philadelphia Flyers.

* Los Angeles saw their hometown Kings win 2-1 hosting the Toronto Maple Leafs.

* It was another 2-1 final in Calgary as the Arizona Coyotes won on the road at the Calgary Flames.

* The only blowout of the night was in Brooklyn as the Washington Capitals beat the New York Islanders 4-1.

* Dem' Detroit Red Wings did good in San Jose, beating the San Jose Sharks 2-1.

Funny how so many games can have so many similar scores. Four of last night's seven games end 2-1. This Friday night features six matches. Boston will go on the road to entertain the New Jersey Devils. Tampa Bay will go way north to meet the Edmonton Oilers. St. Louis is going out to Anaheim to take on the Ducks. You all go enjoy some hockey on this Friday night.

Lots of hits in the Dallas game. The third was basically nothing but hits.

Anyways, Complete Hockey News has released a map of the most popular teams by state. Here it is:

Hockey by State.jpg

Source: Home addresses used when buying tickets on Vivid Seats.

Note: Visiting teams don't matter. For example, if you are a Chicago Blackhawks fan and buy a ticket to a game that is hosted in Dallas, the map will count it as a buy for the Dallas Stars.
