There's still a lot of season left. Anything can still happen.

Also, did you see Dennis Wideman of the Calgary Flames clock that referee from behind last night? He said the hit was unintentional when it clearly looked like he wanted to take him out. See for yourself: http://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/wat...-linesman-onto-ice-with-brutal-hit/vi-BBoNOs0

The NHL has suspended Wideman indefinitely. He will probably likely get about a 20 game minimum suspension. What do you think should be the penalty for Wideman with this hit he put on that ref (even if you think a lifetime ban)?

I don't buy his excuses. Video footage from several angles shoot holes in what he says.
If he did suffer a concussion, he should have never been allowed back on the ice. He had several shifts after this incident.
So much disrespect.
I don't know if he'll lace them up again.
Cheers

What do you guys think about the John Scott being in the All-Star Game? NHL sold out of his shirts 2 days ago. I'm sure they have stocked more though...

Don't mind it, and it'll probably lead to the game's best ratings ever. Tons of people will tune in just for him.

Agreed, the spotlight is on him this weekend. Hopefully he makes the best of it, and has a good time with his family.

Meanwhile...

I'm interested to see how the 3-on-3 format works for the All-Star Game. To me, I almost want to imagine this like the hockey version of NBA Jam in the sense of having some fast-paced and high-scoring hockey. I doubt, however, we'll see hockey players on fire or "Doc" Emerick or somebody saying "boom-shaka-laka" when a goal is scored. I might actually check out how the 3-on-3 All-Star action goes. It should be quite entertaining.

I saw most of the NHL Skills competitions last night. I was most intrigued about the Hardest Shot competition. Man! Can you believe how hard these guys whack the puck? The harder-hit shots are faster than the fastballs most baseball pitchers throw! It was Shea Weber (Nashville) who won the Hardest Shot competition by hitting the puck at 108.1 mph. Wow!

Enjoy the All-Star Game material tonight, folks.

Here is how the All-Star Break madness went down...

All-Star Semifinals
* Metropolitan vs. Atlantic (4-3; Atlantic)
* Central vs. Pacific (9-3; Pacific)

All-Star Final
* Eastern vs. Western (1-0; Western All-Stars)

Congratulations to the Western Conference on racking up the All-Star win. Every game from here on out is to play for the Playoffs and have that chance to hoist Lord Stanley's beautiful Stanley Cup at season's end. Now it's really time to make that playoff push!

John Scott really gave the NHL the middle finger during that game. They wanted him to sit out, and he wound up becoming the true fan favorite and the All-Star MVP instead. On that same note, it was awesome seeing the guy have the time of his life on the ice.

I thoroughly enjoyed the All-Star format this year. But John Scott. Man did he give this weekend something special.

First off, the fans welcomed him whole heartedly. Then the players gave him love.

What really topped it off, was Patrick Kane dropping the gloves and pretend fighting with him. That was truly a moment of beauty, respect and love for other players.

Super glad for Scott and the way he presented himself. Hopefully, some of that money goes out to him and his family for all the trouble they have been through.

His goals were also cool since they were both legit and flukes too.

It's back-to-work for the NHL after the All-Star Game festivities. 12 games! Let me highlight on some of the many games played tonight.

* Not a good night in Brooklyn for RedDragon's Minnesota Wild as the New York Islanders won 5-3.

* So if the New York Islanders won, how did the other New York City team do? The New Jersey Devils took down the New York Rangers 3-2 in New Jersey.

* Bruins Nation was aching as they fell to fellow Original Six team Toronto. The Bruins lost 4-3 in Overtime in Boston.

* A Hat Trick for Sidney Crosby lifted his Pittsburgh Penguins to a 6-5 win against the visiting Ottawa Senators.

* The Keystone State's other NHL team did pretty well themselves. The Philadelphia Flyers took out the Montreal Canadiens 4-2. So how about that- both Pennsylvania NHL teams taking down two Canaidan teams, not to mention two Original Six Canadian teams.

* Edmonton shown no love to the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets, whacking them 5-1.

* The Los Angeles Kings ripped apart and picked apart the Arizona Coyotes 6-2 in Phoenix.

* Sharks and Ducks shared the ice in Anaheim, California. It was the Anaheim Ducks who got the better of the Sharks by a 3-2 score.

* In Denver, the Colorado Avalanche couldn't stop the visiting Chicago Blackhawks. Colorado fell 2-1 to the Blackhawks.

* Nashville just got done hosting the All-Star Game this past weekend. So when it was back to work time for the Predators, they ended up losing to the St. Louis Blues. kolio's St. Louis Blues won 1-0.

* Sanji Himura's Dallas Stars handled the Winnipeg Jets nicely in a 5-3 win in Winninpeg.

* The Washington Capitals suffered a 5-2 defeat at home at the hands of the visiting Florida Panthers. This was a game televised on NBCSN.

That covers everybody. Congratulations to all winners.

As I read from ESPN's Bottom Line, Dennis Wideman of the Calgary Flames got hit with a 20-game suspension for his check on that referee.

As for tonight, it's Wednesday Night Rivalry! It's the first one since the All-Star Break. Here is tonight's three-game schedule:

* BUF Sabres at MON Canadiens
* DET Red Wings at TB Lightning (NBCSN Wednesday Night Rivalry)
* CAR Hurricanes at CGY Flames

So Joey D and AnthonyD1993's Red Wings will get some face time tonight. Enjoy tonight's games.

Can someone 'splain me why/how the Panthers are so good? Are they really that good? Because I see them on facebook saying like they won 6 goals to 2 all the time. I'm like damn how they score so many goals. Then I'm like damn how many people are going to the games. I wonder if I can still go to a game or if it's like all sold out. It's nice and cool in there. Good stadium. No crazy traffic either. But I don't know who anyone is on the team except for like Jaromir Jagr. But I like Jagr because he was like rated 98 in NHL 2001 which I played a lot. And Gretzky and Lemieux weren't in the game, so... So what's going on with the Panthers?

Anyone see Mcdavid's goal the other night? This kid is unreal! Oilers fans finally have something to cheer about.

The power of Kevin Spacey

Can someone 'splain the difference between a goal and a point?

2 points for a Win, 1 point for an Overtime Loss, and 0 for a regulation loss.

No, I mean player points. How does Kane have like 30 goals and 74 points? That doesn't make sense.

So points are goals + assists? That's so dumb. Why don't they just say that?

I'm so close to being done with the Wild this season. They were up 2-0 against the Rangers in Brooklyn tonight and ended up losing 4 or 5-2. How does that happen? We have one if the best D pairings in the league in Ryan Suter (who is good despite being very overrated) and Jared Spurgeon, we have solid goalie in Dubs and Kuemper. We just can't find a way to score the goals that we need. Everyone on the team is in a scoring slump at the moment except big #3, Charlie Coyle. He's 215lbs, has the hands of Kane and the speed of Taresenko, the shot of Stamkos and the hitting ability of Byfuglien. He's an All-Star in the making(same with Spurg) but he can't carry the team himself. I clearly don't have the answers but it's a big issue that must be sorted out very quickly

The Red Wings got the asses kicked. No other way around saying that.

Don't worry, there are plenty of teams to be a bandwagon fan for this year instead. ;)

I'll just post a bunch of musings for this post.

I hope both the Red Wings and Wild can turn things around. I'm sure they will. The one thing nobody wants is to continually lose to where you're looking ahead to next season instead of playing to make the postseason in the current season. Still a lot of time left and still a lot of season left. Losing/Freefalling teams simply need a spark to hopefully get things going.

Having said all of that, it's still pretty... I guess, surprising to see the Florida Panthers have such a ballin' run right now. They did have that winning streak until they got ripped apart at the Calgary Flames earlier this season. Who knows? Maybe Lord Stanley's Cup will return to the state of Florida... just to the team from Sunrise rather than Tampa Bay.

There were two things I found out. One- you can't hit a teammate's hockey stick if a player loses his stick. Someone tried to help a teammate get his stick back and ended up getting a penalty. Two- there are seven teams in both the Pacific and Central divisions. If the NHL wanted to even things out to eight teams in each division, they would need two teams in the respective parts of the divisions. What would be good for the Pacific? This one's easy for me- Seattle. If not Seattle, then maybe Portland. I know the NHL is trying to push to get a team in Las Vegas, but I'd surely love Seattle to get an NHL team. What about the Central? Not to be a homer, but I think Houston would be cool to see in hockey. We had the Houston Aeros in the AHL before they relocated and became the Iowa Wild. I actually would be okay if Houston's would-be NHL team was called the Aeros. If not Houston, then I could probably imagine Tulsa, Wichita, or Lincoln (NE). Maybe there could be another Ohio team in either Cincinnati or Cleveland. How about a team in Milwaukee NHL team for some Wisconsin loving? I don't know Canada's geography too much, but I think Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada would fit geographically for the NHL's Central Division in case you want another Canadian team.

That's all for this post. No final scores to report as of now, but congrats to all who win tonight's games.

The NHL is a funny business. The Red Wings got their asses handed to them yesterday, and they whooped the Islander's asses with a 5-1 drubbing today. What a fickle sport.

Yeah, must have been a pretty good day at The Joe with the Red Wings beating somebody down 5-1. I'm pretty sure this will get the Red Wings going. I think Detroit will be okay the rest of the way. That's even if they keep hovering around being in the playoff mix and being on the outside looking in. Anyhow, congrats to your Red Wings, AnthonyD1993.

I am, however, a bit more concerned about the Minnesota Wild as far as us GTPlaneteers are concerned. This team has talent. It isn't as if the Wild were the NHL's version of the Dallas Cowboys or something. I think the Wild will bounce back. It probably doesn't help much for the Minnesota Wild to play in the stacked Central Division. The Wild will play at kolio's St. Louis Blues later tonight.

Detroit won 5-1 today. Also winning 5-1 as of this post was the Montreal Canadiens hosting the Edmonton Oilers. So Anthony has reason to smile as his boys took down the Oilers.

Two games ended 3-2 in a Shootout, both winners were the road team. New Jersey was proud seeing a statue of Marty Brodeur be erected, but they couldn't stop the visiting Washington Capitals. The New York Rangers won at the Philadelphia Flyers by the same 3-2 margin in a Shootout.

Games about to start up as of this post include the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Florida Panthers and the Buffalo Sabres at the Boston Bruins. Later tonight is the Chicago Blackhawks at the Dallas Stars.

Congratulations to the other winners from today and tonight.

So points are goals + assists? That's so dumb. Why don't they just say that?
It matters for various scoring titles, like the Art Ross for example. A lot of the time, the whole kitten caboodle is decided on points (Goals + Assists), but the first tie breaker in any such scoring trophy is goals over assists. When Jamie Benn won he Art Ross last season, he did it on an assist, fair enough, but before he earned that second assist in the last game of the season, John Tavares of the Islanders would have won the trophy on goals. Benn would have had 35 goals to Tavares's 38.

The Panthers are OK. Their place in the standing isn't really their true talent level, but going forward they have some really fantastic pieces. Their best defenseman (Aaron Ekblad) is a franchise level piece to build around, he's like 19 and already one of the top ~20ish defensemen in the league. Between Alex Barkov, Jonathan Huberdeau, and Nick Bjugstad they have a really solid group of forwards to build around as well.

But this year's success isn't really sustainable, they're getting outshot consistently (5th last in net shots for), but they're getting a really high shooting percentage (goals/shots) and great goaltending. Good percentages aren't "bad", but it's really not common to be able to sustain an outrageously high shooting percentage, and outside of a few elite goalies it's rare to have a consistently above average save percentage. Luongo is genuinely very good but at his age (36) it would be hard to count on him continuing to play at that level. Every year there's a team like this that gets massively outshot but is bailed out by a good run of goaltending and/or shooting variance.

I'm not as familar with baseball analytics as hockey analytics but they're basically the hockey equivalent of a high BABIP team on offense, and a really low BABIP on defense.
