Well, they ain't always pretty. and they ain't always against teams playing intentionally dirty and with linesmen that couldn't ref their way out of a paper bag. Devan Dubnyk got run over by Anders Lee in the last minute, so so he gave Lee a little whack. Ryan Suter jumps to Dubnyk's aid after Lee slew foots Dubnyk and somehow Dubnyk is the only one getting a penalty.
Another example: Christian Folin interferes with Cal Clutterbuck. Clutterbuck ends up without his gloves on jabbing at Folin's face and Folin ends up with the only penalty.

Those are the 2 most obvious ones but there were more. Think those refs should invest in some nice glasses. Certainly couldn't make them any worse at calling penalties...

Ladies and gentlemen, we're going to have one epic win streak come to a wicked end on New Year's Eve. Minnesota won at home 6-4 against the New York Islanders to push their win streak to 12. Columbus won 5-3 at the Winnipeg Jets to extend their win streak to 14. New Year's Eve in St. Paul, Minnesota- Blue Jackets at Wild. As the name of an old PC game goes, One Must Fall! So whose franchise-record winning streak will fall- the Minnesota Wild at 12, or the Columbus Blue Jackets at 14? It won't be the end of the season for either team, but it will be the end for one win streak. Yahoo! is even going to stream the game on New Year's Eve. This should be fun. Buckle up, RedDragon and Northstar... it's going to be a (no pun intended) wild ride on New Year's Eve!

Elsewhere...

* NBCSN shown the New Jersey Devils at the Washington Capitals. The Caps have had the Devils' number many times before. Not tonight, though. Regulation nor Overtime solved anything. The Devils won 2-1 in a Shootout. The Devils struck first on the scoring column.

* Two B's went at it- Boston at Buffalo. It was the Boston Bruins that left western New York state with a 4-2 victory.

* Also winning 4-2 was Dallas at home against the Colorado Avalanche.

* 3-2 was the final for four games tonight, three of them needing Overtime. The only non-Overtime 3-2 victory was Chicago's win at Nashville. The other three 3-2 finals needed Overtime: Toronto winning in Overtime at Tampa Bay 3-2, Montreal winning in Overtime 3-2 at Florida, and Detroit defeating Ottawa in Ottawa 3-2 in Overtime.

Congratulations to all winners from Thursday's games. That includes the eventual winners of ANA at CGY, LA at EDM, and NYR at ARI.

I had NO idea I hit 20K posts all-time here on GTPlanet. So this post marks Post No. 20,001...

Yahoo! Sports deemed Columbus at Minnesota as the "Unsustainabowl." The winner of this game in St. Paul, MN won by the score of 4-2... and it was Columbus that won this game. Columbus' winning streak now goes to 15 games. Columbus' winning streak will go into 2017, but Minnesota's win streak will not. The Wild will want to start a new win streak. And who knows? Maybe Minnesota and Columbus could be the Stanley Cup Finals should both advance to this level. So I'm sorry to Wild Nation to report this sad news.

Here are some other finals as of the time of this post. As a mini-spoiler, the other Final scores seem to be coincidental. You'll see why:

* Two games ended 3-1, both victories by the home team. The Boston Bruins won at home against the Buffalo Sabres 3-1, and the Tampa Bay Lightning won 3-1 at home against the Carolina Hurricanes.

* The road team tripled up the home teams 6-2. The Washington Capitals smashed the New Jersey Devils on the road 6-2, and the New York Islanders grounded the Winnipeg Jets 6-2 in Winnipeg.

Congratulations to all other winners up to and beyond the time of this post.

Happy new year!

Today and tomorrow feature some outdoor games. The only game with Original Six teams is the Detroit Red Wings at the Toronto Maple Leafs. This game will be on NBC later today. Two other games are on for today as well. Those include Canada's capital city team- the Ottawa Senators, playing at America's capital city team- the Washington Capitals. And also, the Philadelphia Flyers pay a visit to the Anaheim Ducks.

Enjoy the first three games of 2017! Good luck to all of your favorite teams.

There was outdoor hockey yesterday, and there will be more outdoor hockey today (weather conditions permitting). Here is a look at yesterday's action...

* Sixty minutes wasn't enough for Original Six rivals Detroit and Toronto to settle their differences. The Original Six team that won yesterday in Toronto was the Toronto Maple Leafs, to the tune of a 5-4 Overtime victory. The Red Wings' season continues to be rough.

* In the battle of capital cities, it was America's capital city beating Canada's capital city. The Washington Capitals defeated the Ottawa Senators 2-1 in Washington, D.C.

* Regulation solved nothing in Anaheim, and neither did Overtime. So a Shootout was needed for the Anaheim Ducks to ground the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 (2-1 in Shootout).

Today's games are as follows:

* CHI Blackhawks at STL Blues (Bridgestone Winter Classic)
* BOS Bruins at NJ Devils
* COL Avalanche at VAN Canucks

As I mentioned, there is some legitimate concern about if the game can be played in its entirety today in St. Louis. Fog and potential heavy rain are possible in St. Louis today which could prevent this game from being played fully. It is said that there is an open date tomorrow that could be used to play or resume this game should it not be completed today. So we'll see what happens.

The game is on right now on NBC as I type this. "Doc" Emrick is on the call. It is currently 1-0, Chicago with 16:36 (and counting) left in the 1st Period.

Enjoy hockey on this first week of 2017.

Here are results from yesterday's action...

* The Winter Classic in St. Louis saw the Chicago Blackhawks take on the St. Louis Blues. While Busch Stadium is usually home to the St. Louis Cardinals of Major League Baseball, the crowd was rocking blue for their beloved St. Louis Blues. Chicago struck first with a very early goal. St. Louis, however, scored four unanswered goals to win the game 4-1. There were fears this game wouldn't be complete thanks to certain weather conditions. However, the game was all done.

* The only other Original Six team to play yesterday was the Boston Bruins. Their trip to New Jersey also ended in getting beat by three goals. The Devils beat the Bruins 3-0. So both of the Original Six teams that played yesterday lost and lost by three goals.

* The Colorado Avalanche headed up to Vancouver for the day's only Canadian game. The Vancouver Canucks won this one at home 3-2 over the Avalanche.

Today features seven games. So if you're looking for a game tonight, here is what is on schedule for you:

* NJ Devils at CAR Hurricanes
* BUF Sabres at NYR Rangers
* TOR Maple Leafs at WAS Capitals
* EDM Oilers at COL Blue Jackets
* WPG Jets at TB Lightning
* MON Canadiens at NSH Predators
* LA Kings at SJ Sharks

Yahoo! Sports will be showing the New Jersey Devils at Carolina Hurricanes. In case you're wondering, the longest overall winning streak by any NHL team all-time is 18 wins by the 1992-1993 Pittsburgh Penguins (one of PIT's wins then was a tie). I mention this because the Columbus Blue Jackets currently have a 15-game winning streak. Columbus' winning streak was sustained after they defeated the Minnesota Wild back on New Year's Eve 2016 in St. Paul, MN (MIN was on a 12-game winning streak then).

I hope you NHL fans get to enjoy some hockey tonight.

Welcome to the first Wednesday of 2017. And guess what? It's Wednesday Night Rivalry! This Wednesday is loaded with six matches on tonight. Here are the games you can follow tonight:

* WPG Jets at FLA Panthers
* MON Canadiens at DAL Stars
* NYR Rangers at PHI Flyers (NBCSN Wednesday Night Rivalry)
* COL Avalanche at CGY Flames
* ARI Coyotes at VAN Canucks
* DET Red Wings at ANA Ducks

So are you ready for tonight's action? First Hump Day of the year. Let's hit the ice and play some hockey, ya?

Just found this thread and will be returning often. Love the recaps and commentary. As my SIG should indicate, it's been a tough season to be a fan for me. Seriously nearvous the 25 year playoff streak my have come to a close. There's still a little hope left, let's hope Detroit can get through Anaheim tonight.

I am sad to inform you of the passing of Boston Bruins legend of Mitt Schmidt at the age of 98 today. Schmidt played parts of 16 seasons with the team and recorded 229 goals and 346 assists in 776 career games with the team. He earned the Art Ross trophy in 1940 and the Hart Trophy in 1951.

He also earned the Allen Cup with the Ottawa RCAF Flyers when he fought in World War II, and was inducted into the NHL Hall of Fame in 1962. He was recently named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players of All Time.

Welcome to this party, Gr8_Lakes! :)

Yeah, I read that, Sanji Himura. I surely offer my thoughts and prayers in loving memory of Mitt Schmidt and all who known and loved him.

Here is a rundown of Wednesday night's action...

* NBCSN's Wednesday Night Rivalry this week was between the New York Rangers at the Philadelphia Flyers. The New York Rangers convincingly 5-2.

* The Detroit Red Wings decided to hit up Southern California to meet the Anaheim Ducks. All the Red Wings got for their troubles was another loss- a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Anaheim Ducks. Yep... 26 straight playoff appearances for Hockeytown is really in jeopardy pending an epic comeback.

* Sanji Himura's Dallas Stars fared no better at home as the boys from Big D lost 4-3 hosting the Montreal Canadiens.

* Colorado has Avalanches, but they couldn't cave in the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night. The Flames won 4-1 against the visiting Avalanche.

* The only other game in Canada was in Vancouver. The Canucks welcomed the Arizona Coyotes. The 'Yotes were put down 3-0 by the Canucks.

* In Sunrise, FL; the Winnipeg Jets tamed the Florida Panthers 4-1.

This is not an NHL note, but if you follow the IIHF World Championship, it will be the United States taking on Canada in the IIHF World Juniors Championship Gold Medal game. The United States won against Russia 4-3 in a game that had to be decided in a Shootout. Canada then took down Sweden 5-2. So it's the USA against Canada for the Gold Medal in the IIHF World Juniors Championship.

Congratulations to all winners from Wednesday. And once again, my condolences go out in loving memory of Milt Schmidt.

I find it incredibly hilarious that in any other division, the Capitals would be at the top, yet they play in the currently bonkers Metro division, and are a wild card team.

Maybe if they do get in they can actually go somewhere.

Ah, who am I kidding, disappointment is practically required to be a Caps fan.

Let's take a look at the standings heading into tonight's action. Where is/are your favorite team(s) so far?

WEST WILD CARD HOLDERS: Calgary, Los Angeles

Still a long ways to go. So keep on fighting and keep on believing! Good luck to all of your favorite teams. Oh, and don't forget to set me straight on anything I may have screwed up on here.

Columbus' 16-game winning streak goes down in flames when they visited the Washington Capitals. The Caps ended the winning ways of Columbus and brought them back down to earth with a 5-0 blanking.

Two other games went final as of this post, and here they are:

* The Edmonton Oilers took down the Boston Bruins 4-3 in Boston. Patrick Maroon of EDM logged a Hat Trick to help the Oilers' cause in this one.

* 6-1 was the final in Tampa Bay as the Nashville Predators treated the Tampa Bay Lightning as merely static cling.

Carolina at St. Louis and Buffalo at Chicago are ongoing. Detroit at Los Angeles and Minnesota at San José are on deck.

Congratulations to all winners from this Thursday's games, including the eventual winners of games in progress and upcoming.

Here is a report on games that went final on this first Saturday of 2017...

* It was the Buffalo Sabres that won at home 4-3 against the Winnipeg Jets.

* The Philadelphia Flyers doubled up the Tampa Bay Lightning at home 4-2.

* The Minnesota Wild had a 12-game winning streak snapped by Columbus on New Year's Eve. The green and red boys lost in Overtime 4-3 at the Los Angeles Kings. So the Wild taste defeat again.

* Wild lost... how did the other hot winning streak team do? It was rough sledding for the Blue Jackets as they lost 5-4 to the visiting New York Rangers.

* Sixty minutes and three periods didn't solve anything in New Jersey. So the Edmonton Oilers and New Jersey Devils had to seetle this one in Overtime. And in the OT, it was a 2-1 win for Edmonton.

* Boston stepped into the Panthers' Den, and the sun wasn't shining on the team from Sunrise, FL. 4-0 blanking by Boston on the Florida Panthers.

* Only one goal was scored in Canada's capital city tonight, and that goal was scored by the Washington Capitals. 1-0 victory by the Caps against the Senators.

* The NHL has their Original Six. Of those six teams, two of them are Canadian teams. Both of Canada's Original Six squared off in Toronto. On this night, it was the Canadiens downing the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-3.

Congratulations to all winners, including the eventual winners of the following games: DAL at STL, NYI at ARI, VAN at CGY, and DET at SJ.

At the top of the hour, NBCSN will be showing the Minnesota Wild at the Anaheim Ducks in the debut of "Star Sunday." I think if Minnesota wins in regulation followed by a Chicago loss, Minnesota could take the top spot in the Central Division after tonight. So we'll see what happens as the Wild try and bounce back after their loss in Overtime at Los Angeles.

This "Star Sunday" thing is more like NBCSN focusing in on one specific player for each team. The scoreboard on screen shows how long someone's shift is on the ice. Even stats like shots on goal and hits are recorded. With this game between the Minnesota Wild at the Anaheim Ducks, the two focused stars are Ryan Suter for MIN and Ryan Kesler for ANA.

I'm pretty sure if the featured star for Minnesota was Zach Parise, our RedDragon would be all smitten. :) I probably would want to learn a little more about Matt Dumba or Devan Dubnyk for the Wild. Speaking of Zach Parise, happy birthday to the little Parise twins! There was a mention to them during the NBCSN broadcast.

As of this post, Minnesota has scored two unanswered goals to go ahead 2-1 in the 2nd Period after trailing 1-0 after the 1st Period. This is the second intermission as of this post.

Minnesota is leading after a great goal from Jared Spurgeon! ^-^
ssYnWYV.gif

As he's known to some fans, Tank made a great snap shot.

Why Tank? because he's one of, if not the best players in the league at blocking shots and keeping going, like a tank

Yeah, RedDragon. I saw both goals by Minnesota while on that Power Play. I think I saw Parise assisted on one of Minnesota's two goals. Only sad thing is that if Minnesota wins tonight, it won't be another shutout win for Dubnyk (would have been his sixth).

Just now, it would have been a 3-1 Wild lead with 18:34 left in the 3rd Period, but the puck was kicked in by a Wild player. And so the goal was denied. Wild still lead 2-1 as of this post.

The Wild are now 2-0-1 in January, hopefully they continue playing this good in their usual choke month.

Man, I cannot stand the wild

On another random note, I'm really digging this new Finnish kid for the Avs, there is a goal he put home from a sweet pass not so long back, hmm. I can find.

Love this goal, what a pass.

I forgot how much I couldn't stand the NBCSN broadcast team. Their announcing is horrendously bad. Just straight up some of the worst announcing in the sport. Please for the love of god, if you are gonna put a game on national television, please give us a proper commentary team. Not someone who mis pronounces Mikhail Granlund's name, shows off Kesler doing things that should be penalties and saying that he's doing a great job, doesn't even bring up anything that Wild fans care about, like how our prospects dominated at the World Juniors, and completely and obviously hopes for the Ducks to win

I wish Patrik Lane well in recovering. The Winnipeg Jet is out indefinitely with a concussion after a brutal hit.

This is not a standings update, but it is sort of a stats post. These are all team stats. Here are a few observations I made (source: Yahoo! Sports)...

Home Records...
The Columbus Blue Jackets have the best home record in the East with a 16-4-1 record. The Chicago Blackhawks have the best record among Western Conference teams with a 16-4-4 record. Colorado has the worst home record at 5-13-1. Worst home record among Eastern Conference teams is Detroit, with a 7-10-3 record at The Joe.

Away Records...
On the Western Conference front, the Minnesota Wild have the best road record at 12-5-5. The New York Rangers have the best away record at 15-6-0. So who are the worst away teams? New Jersey is one of them- a 6-12-5 record in away games. The Western Conference's worst away team record belongs to Vancouver, with a 5-13-1 record.

Current Streaks...
The longest current win streaks are with Pittsburgh and Washington, both with five-game winning streaks. They'll clash this Wednesday Night on NBCSN's Wednesday Night Rivalry in Washington, D.C. The longest losing streak belongs to Tampa Bay with their current four-game losing streak.

I know I said team stats, but here are some individual stats I came across...

* Connor McDavid of Edmonton has scored the most points so far with 48 points. Tied for second most point scored are PIT's Sidney Crosby and CHI's Patrick Kane, each with 44 points.

* Connor McDavid also has the most assists with 34 assists. Patrick Kane (CHI) has 32 assists, and Victor Hedman (TB) has 30.

* Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby leads the way in goals with 26 goals. He's ahead of Jeff Carter of LA with 22 goals and Patrik Lane with 21.

* On the Plus/Minus side, it's a tie between Justin Schultz of Pittsburgh and Ryan Suter of Minnesota with 24. Justin Zucker, also from the Minnesota Wild, also is among the top 3 with a plus/minus of 23.

* Leading the way in goals against average is Minnesota's Devan Dubnyk with a GAA of 1.80. Duubs (as our RedDragon calls him) lead the way ahead of a tie between Boston's Tuukka Rask and Washington's Braden Holtby, both with a GAA of 1.93.

* Minnesota's Devan Dubnyk also leads in Save Percentage. His Save Percentage is .939, and he's ahead of Detroit's Jimmy Howard (.934) and WAS' Braden Holtby with a .931 save percentage.

* The goalie with the most wins so far is Sergei Bobrovsky with 26 wins. Devan Dubnyk (MIN) has 21 wins, and Martin Jones of San José has 20 wins.

* There is a three-way tie for shutouts at goalie: Devan Dubnyk (MIN), Tuukka Rask (BOS), and Braden Holtby (WAS) all have five shoutouts. Everybody else have four or less shutout wins.

Since I used Yahoo! Sports for this post, you can see a lot more stats by going to: http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/stats/ .

Four games tonight:
* FLA Panthers at NJ Devils
* WAS Capitals at MON Canadiens
* CGY Flames at WPG Jets
* DAL Stars at LA Kings

Thanks for reading. Enjoy some NHL action.

May I interest you in some hockey, sir/madam? Good! May I also interest you in some seven games tonight? That's right, GTPlaneteers- seven games are on tonight. Yahoo! Sports will be showing the San José Sharks at the Edmonton Oilers. NBCSN will have on the Boston Bruins paying a visit to the St. Louis Blues. Original Six action will take place when the Detroit Red Wings battle at the Chicago Blackhawks. Out west, the Dallas Stars will hit the road and entertain the Anaheim Ducks.

There are some other games, but I wanted to touch up on some of them. So go watch a game or two tonight.

It's go time once again tonight, GTPlanet. Wednesday Night Rivalry is tonight, and so there are a total of four games tonight. What will this Wednesday look like? Here's the schedule for this one:

* FLA Panthers at NYI Islanders
* MON Canadiens at WPG Jets
* PIT Penguins at WAS Capitals (NBCSN Wednesday Night Rivalry)
* SJ Sharks at CGY Flames

Even parity, I'd say- two games in the USA and two in Canada. Pittsburgh at Washington should be pretty intense.

You know something I never thought of until recently? The trade market. I have to wonder what teams will be buyers and sellers to help out certain teams who could benefit from trades. Talented players may end up going to other teams who may be able to make a recovery to maybe make the postseason.

Anyhow, enjoy some hockey tonight. Also, are there any players from your favorite team(s) do you think could be traded?

Well, the Wild are in a tight place as far as salary cap. We have 3 very good players who need their big boy contracts this off season: Nino Niederreiter, Mikhail Granlund, and Eric Haula. We are planning on Marco Scandella getting taken in the expansion draft which brings in $4million, but we could still use a bit more. I'd love to get rid of Jason Pomminville somehow, as he's like 34 now and he's been dropped to the 4th line. We have players to replace them without a huge drop in quality at all.
