The Minnesota Wild's trip to Calgary ends up being a 3-2 loss in a Shootout (2-1 in the shootout in favor of CGY). So 60 minutes of regulation plus 5 minutes of Overtime wasn't enough to settle this one.

The only other game on Friday was Montreal at San José. The Sharks won 2-1 against the Canadiens.

I read that Justin Abdelkader of Detroit will be out for 2-4 weeks. I'm sure this will hurt the Red Wings.

Only two games on Friday. Saturday? Try 12! Yahoo! Sports will be showing the Columbus Blue Jackets at Arizona Coyotes. Enjoy some weekend hockey, NHL fans!

There were seven games on today. Here's a rundown...

* Nobody could score in regulation in Raleigh, so Overtime was needed. In the end, it was the Carolina Hurricanes who defended home ice with a 1-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

* The Detroit Red Wings continued their road trip as they were hosted by the New York Islanders. The Red Wings won 4-3 in Overtime.

* Edmonton hosted the Minnesota Wild. Regulation didn't solve anything as both teams cashed in a goal. The game ended in Overtime as Minnesota won 2-1.

* 2-1 was also the score in Chicago, but this one was in regulation as the Winnipeg Jets took down the Chicago Blackhawks.

* Philadelphia doubled up the Nashville Predators 4-2. The Music City was singing the blues as the Preds were downed by the Flyers, who have now won five straight games.

* In Los Angeles, regulation nor Overtime proved anything. So in a Shootout, the Montreal Canadiens escaped Los Angeles with a 5-4 victory (3-2 in Shootout).

* OWNAGE OF THE DAY would go to the Calgary Flames. They smacked up the other SoCal team- the Calgary Flames put an 8-3 whacking of the visiting Anaheim Ducks.

That will do it. Hopefully your favorite team(s) won.

If the Red Wings could stop emulating the Detroit Lions, that would be great.
They were determined to throw away a win against one of the worst teams in the league, color me shocked when they still seen it through.

If you'll be following the NHL tonight, four games are on tap for tonight. Here's the card for this Monday night:

* FLA Panthers at BOS Bruins
* OTT Senators at PIT Penguins
* BUF Sabres at WAS Capitals
* ARI Coyotes at COL Blue Jackets

Yahoo! Sports will show the Sabres at Capitals game if you watch games on Yahoo! Sports. I never followed a game streaming online, so I may actually watch a little of streaming coverage online just to see what it's like.

Anyhow, enjoy some hockey tonight if you'll be watching.

Tonight is another bout of Wednesday Night Rivalry, but it is also a rather somber anniversary as we remember the lives lost from the Pearl Harbor attacks in 1941. Even still, we got hockey tonight with four games. So tonight...

* MIN Wild at TOR Maple Leafs
* BOS Bruins at WAS Capitals (NBCSN Wednesday Night Rivalry)
* OTT Senators at SJ Sharks
* CAR Hurricanes at ANA Ducks

The Wild's 5-game road trip concludes tonight with their game in Toronto. So they'll be back home to the warm confines of St. Paul, MN for their next game after this match.

Should you get a chance to follow the games, go enjoy some NHL hockey tonight. And more importantly, I salute all the men and women serving to project the United States home and abroad on this special day.

The Philadelphia Flyers have been ballin' of late. They won 4-2 at home against the Dallas Stars. This win marks their 8th straight win of the season. Brayden Schenn got himself a Hat Trick for PHI. I think this win puts Philadelphia at 17-10-3 and 3rd in the Metropolitan. Meanwhile, Dallas is now 11-12-6 and 6th in the Central.

Who angered Montreal? The Canadiens destroyed the Colorado Avalanche 10-1 tonight in Montreal. Man... good day to be a Habs fan. Not so much for an Avs fan.

A few results from last night...

* The Minnesota Wild returned home after their five game road trip to welcome the Edmonton Oilers. MIN won 3-2, but they couldn't handle this one in regulation or in Overtime. 3-2 was also the Shootout score that Minnesota won with.

* Is there some sort of coincidence that the road team won 4-1 last night? Among those who won 4-1: Washington at Buffalo, Columbus at Detroit, and St. Louis at New Jersey.

* The San José Sharks lost to their in-state rival Anaheim Ducks 3-2.

* The New York Rangers and Chicago Blackhawks failed to score in regulation. Since nobody scored, we need Overtime to solve this issue. This match between two of the NHL's Original Six teams in Chi-Town ended in a 1-0 victory by the Rangers.

Remember that this section includes only scores from Friday night.

Congratulations to all winners from tonight's 10 games on this Saturday.

[UPDATE] added COL at MON score.

That catch (Post #188) was like a baseball catch... only with skates! Wow!

This is not a full standings update, but it is a look at who all are ahead so far. These are the Division leaders and Wild Card holders if the playoffs began today. So take a look:

--- EASTERN (Dec. 12, 2016) ---
ATLANTIC: Montreal (19-6-3, 41 pts.), OTT (16-11-2, 34 pts.), BOS (15-12-2, 32 pts.)
METROPOLITAN: New York Rangers (20-9-1, 41 pts.), PIT (18-7-3, 39 pts.), PHI (18-10-3, 39 pts.)
EAST WILD CARD: Columbus (17-5-4, 38 pts.), Washington (17-7-3, 37 pts.)

--- WESTERN (Dec. 12, 2016) ---
CENTRAL: Chicago (18-8-4, 40 pts.), STL (16-9-4, 36 pts.), MIN (15-8-4, 34 pts.)
PACIFIC: Anaheim (15-9-5, 35 pts.), EDM (15-11-5, 35 pts.), CGY (16-13-2, 34 pts.)
WEST WILD CARD: San José (16-11-1, 33 pts.), Los Angeles (14-11-2, 30 pts.)

There's still a lot of season left. For right now, though, this is what the Stanley Cup Playoffs would look like if it began today. I apologize if I screw up any of the stats here.

Outside of this update, I've been seeing some stats on the Minnesota Wild. As I visited Yahoo! Sports, here are a few stats on the Wild from the site:

* 16th in Goals For (74 GF)
* Goals Against: 1
* 22nd in Power Play percentage
* 10th in Penalty Kill
* 9th in Penalty Minutes

The Wild is a very good team. I do like mentioning them for the likes of our good mates RedDragon and Northstar. The Central is sort of a Murderer's Row of talent.

On another end, and thinking of other good mates, it's been tough sledding for Hockeytown. The Detroit Red Wings are 13-12-4 with 30 points, and they are currently 6th in the Atlantic. 25(?) straight seasons making the playoffs. At this point, making it 26 is in jeopardy though we are about 25% of the way through the season. Hope AnthonyD1993 and Joey D's Red Wings can right the ship and get back to winning.

Only two games on tonight: Arizona at Pittsburgh and an Original Six battle with Boston at Montreal. For you college hockey fans, I started a thread on college hockey in case you want to discuss hockey in the college ranks. So check that out if you like that.

Enjoy some hockey tonight, and good luck to all of your favorite teams.

"He scores!" *horn sounds off* Fist bump your boys on the sideline. Or for you hockey girls of GTPlanet, fist bump your girls on the sideline.

Time for some more NHL hockey, folks! We got ten games tonight. Yahoo! will show Los Angeles at Buffalo. NBCSN, meanwhile, has an Original Six game between the Chicago Blackhawks at the New York Rangers. Detroit will host Arizona. Florida will be at the Minnesota Wild.

Enjoy this Tuesday night of NHL action.

We had an Emergency Netminder alert.

43-year old firefighter Jay Stevens served as emergency backup for the Utah Grizzles of the ECHL, and actually got into the game.

Stevens made 7-saves and killed off two penalties while Grizzles starter Ryan McKay was sent to the locker room to get stitches after getting hit in the head with a puck. He also allowed 0 goals.

"Baby it's cold outside..."

Well, the National Hockey League is ready to warm things up for you. Love hurts, so on the night you love to hate, we got Wednesday Night Rivalry. Let's take a look at this Wednesday night's action:

* SJ Sharks at OTT Senators
* BOS Bruins at PIT Penguins (NBCSN Wednesday Night Rivalry)
* TB Lightning at CGY Flames
* PHI Flyers at COL Avalanche (NBCSN)

So on NBC Sports Network, the Keystone State is in vogue. Pittsburgh will do some housekeeping against Boston while Philadelphia will entertain the Colorado Avalanche on the road.

Go enjoy some hockey tonight should you be keeping tabs on tonight's games.

Pittsburgh has now won seven straight, and Philadelphia has now won ten straight. How about the Keystone State's two NHL teams? Both teams coincidentally won 4-3. The Pittsburgh Penguins won 4-3 in Overtime against the Boston Bruins, and the Philadelphia Flyers won 4-3 in regulation at the Colorado Avalanche.

Those games were in the United States. So what happened in Canada? Elsewhere...

* Tampa Bay Lightning iced the Calgary Flames by doubling them up 6-3. This game occurred in Calgary.

* Regulation solved nothing in Pittsburgh, neither was anything settled in Canada's capital city. Overtime didn't solve anything between the Sharks and Senators. So what do you do? Go to a Shootout. On the winning end of the 4-3 final was the San José Sharks (SJ 1-0 in Shootout).

Congratulations to all of Wednesday's winners.

It's honestly kind of funny that the Red Wings are terrible and the Lions are good given that Detroit sports fans have always come to expect the exact opposite to be true.

Heads up! NBCSN is showing the Los Angeles Kings at the Pittsburgh Penguins. LA's 9-game road trip continues with their trip to the Steel City.

Another note to pass along is that the Dallas Stars' F Cody Eakin has been suspended four games for charging at New York Rangers' goalie Henrik Lundqvist. It didn't seem like a thug hit, but it was fairly Bush League to run over H. Lundqvist the way he did and the impact of that hit. I think Eakin got a five-minute penalty in the game. The NHL, however, levied out a deeper punishment to Eakin.

Enjoy this weekend's games. Good luck to all of your favorite teams.

Jaromir Jagr is most likely only days away from achieving
something huge in the hockey world and in hockey history.

He will soon move up to the #2 spot all time in most NHL points
in the regular season, only behind the Great One.

And he does so despite leaving the NHL for Russia for three seasons (2008-09, 2009-10 & 2010-11)
missing a potential 246 regular season games, and despite missing another 150 potential games from
three lockouts (1994-95, 2004-05 & 2012-13). Pretty amazing stuff.

I was into hockey long before I got interested in motorsport and cars and Jagr has always
been there as a player I've been intrigued by. Same with Martin Brodeur and some of the
enforcers from when the league was a lot more physical and each team had a policeman on
the ice.

Jagr currently sits at 16 points in 32 games this season with three points from the last five games.
He's off the pace from last season but he's still 3rd on the team in points with only Marchessault and
Barkov ahead of him. He needs only three more points to tie Mark Messier for 2nd place.

NHL Regular Season

1 Wayne Gretzky (1979-1999) 2,857 points
2 Mark Messier (1979-2004) 1,887 points
3 Jaromir Jagr (1990-2017) 1,884 points

I think know Jagr easily would have reached 2,000+ points had he not left for three full seasons
to play in the KHL and without enduring three separate lockouts.

I did some stat checking to see where he ranks all-time as of today;

NHL Regular Season

Games played - 1,661 (4th all-time)
Goals - 755 (3rd all-time)
Assists - 1,129 (6th all-time) needs 6 to tie Paul Coffey for 5th
Points - 1,884 (3rd all-time) needs 3 to tie Mark Messier for 2nd

Power Play Goals - 212 (12th all-time) needs 5 to move into the Top 10
Power Play Points - 602 (2nd all-time) needs 29 to tie Joe Sakic for 1st

Game Winning Goals - 133 (1st all-time)
Overtime Goals - 19 (1st all-time)

Add to that his two Stanley Cup rings, five Art Ross trophies, three Ted Lindsay awards, one
Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, one Hart Memorial Trophy, four gold medals from international
play plus his 201 points in the NHL playoffs (5th all-time). Truly a living legend and a lock for
the Hall of Fame.

He's had some problems off the ice and moved around the league a number
of times playing for many different teams, with media speculating and reporting about
stuff for years, but there's no question Jagr is one of the absolute greats of this sport.
Just like with Martin Brodeur I'm enjoying every chance I get to see Jagr still lace 'em up.

There are two scores I want to make mention of.

* First of all, ten and no more. Philadelphia's trip to Dallas didn't end so well. The Dallas Stars grounded the Flyers with a 3-1 victory. Philadelphia's 10-game winning streak is snapped in Big D.

* The Minnesota Wild went wild on the Arizona Coyotes. The Desert Dogs got smacked up in the Northstar State. Ryan Suter cashed in a goal on a Power Play in the 1st Period. Tyler Graovac joined in on the scoring party to make it 2-0 after two periods. Then Chris Stewart and Eric Staal wanted in on the Wild scoring. Breaking up the shutout was a goal by Brendan Perlini for ARI.

One of the other matches to mention is Anaheim leading at Detroit 3-1 with 14:27 and counting left in the 2nd Period at the time of this post.

This is not an NHL result, but the Canadian women's hockey team defeated the USA women's hockey team 5-3. It was a game televised on NBCSN earlier today.

Congratulations to all of Saturday's winners up to and beyond the time of this post.

There are 12 games on tonight. If you're on Yahoo!, they'll be showing the Anaheim Ducks at the Montreal Canadiens later tonight. Other games on tonight...

* The Detroit Red Wings will hit the road and entertain the Tampa Bay Lightning down in the Sunshine State.
* The other Florida NHL team, the Florida Panthers, will welcome the Buffalo Sabres.
* The Minnesota Wild will host the Colorado Avalanche.
* Perhaps the biggest surprise, the Columbus Blue Jacket will host the Los Angeles Kings.
* In Pittsburgh, the Penguins will host the New York Rangers.
* Just like last season's playoffs, it's the St. Louis Blues at the Dallas Stars.
* The only all-Canadian battle tonight is the Winnipeg Jets at the Vancouver Canucks.

These are among many other games. So if you're an NHL fan, enjoy tonight's action along with tomorrow night's Wednesday Night Rivalry.

This is the final Wednesday Night Rivalry before Christmas and the penultimate Wednesday Night Rivalry of 2016. There will be only two games on tonight, and they are:

* PHI Flyers at WAS Capitals (NBCSN Wednesday Night Rivalry)
* EDM Oilers at ANA Ducks

So feel free to enjoy the games tonight. By the way, how about one of the hottest teams so far- the Minnesota Wild? Seven straight wins along with five shutout wins for Devan Dubnyk. Duubs leads the NHL in shutout wins for goalies. The boys from St. Paul are pretty baller right now.

Anyhow, enjoy tonight's action, and good luck to all of your favorite teams.

If Devan Dubnyk isn't in your consideration for the Vezina Trophy, then you don't know anything about hockey. His stats this season are lights out and make him the best goalie in the NHL. Not Price, not Rask, or Bishop, or Luongo, or anyone else. Devan Dubnyk of the Minnesota Wild.

SO: 5 (1st)
SV%: .948 (1st)
GAA: 1.55 (1st)
Wins: 16 (T-6th)

The big 6ft 6in goalie has won games anyway needed and he proved that with a clinic of a shutout against the Avs last night.

Let me touch up on games that have concluded tonight.

* A total of 11 points were scored in New York City. The Minnesota Wild and New York Rangers were lighting each other up like that big Christmas tree in NYC, but it was the boys from St. Paul, MN that won this one- 7-4. The Wild are keeping up their winning ways of late. While NYR struck first, the key to Minnesota winning this one was the Wild putting a 5-spot on the scoreboard in the 2nd Period.

* Minnesota's been hot, but so too is Columbus. The latest victim to the Columbus Blue Jackets was the Montreal Canadiens. The Habs didn't have such a good time in Ohio's capital city. Columbus won 2-1.

* The New Jersey Devils were no match for the Pittsburgh Penguins at home. The defending Stanley Cup champs won this one 4-1 at home in the Steel City.

* Did the Islanders lose like the other New York City team? Nope. The Islanders held serve at home big time with a 5-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres.

* 4-0 was what the final score read in Washington, D.C. as the Capitals won 4-0 against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

* Regulation didn't settle anything in Raleigh, NC. So Overtime was needed for the Carolina Hurricanes to defeat the Boston Bruins 3-2.

Those are all the games that wrapped up lately. Congratulations to all other winners from Friday's games.

Can't wait until New Year's when the Blue Jackets and the Wild are gonna be going head to head. Hopefully the Wild come out on top.

And let's just remind people, it's been 16 years, but the 2 newest expansion teams are the 2 best in the league right now: Columbus and Minnesota

And let's just remind people, it's been 16 years, but the 2 newest expansion teams are the 2 best in the league right now: Columbus and Minnesota

I find it kind of funny that both teams broke their records for win streaks in the same span of time (both teams had a previous record of 9 in a row).

No games on tonight. So I'll share some NHL musings here.

* 10 straight wins for the Minnesota Wild, 12 straight wins for the Columbus Blue Jackets. The two youngest franchises in the NHL are ballin' right now. Minnesota is currently 2nd in the Central Division with a 21-8-4 record. Their next game is at the Nashville Predators tomorrow night. Had they not lost at Calgary back on December 2, we'd be talking about a Wild team that's undefeated in December. The year ends for Minnesota with them hosting the New York Islanders on Thursday followed by hosting Columbus on New Year's Eve. About those Blue Jackets... unlike Minnesota, Columbus has not lost a single game this month. Their next game will be against Boston tomorrow night. Columbus hits the road to Winnipeg on Thursday and at Minnesota on New Year's Eve. Columbus currently leads the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference with a 23-5-4 record.

I don't think it will happen, but I could realistically see a Minnesota Wild vs. Columbus Blue Jackets Stanley Cup Final. Imagine the two youngest franchises battling for their first Stanley Cup. They'll no longer be the youngest franchises for when the Vegas Golden Knights play their first season of NHL hockey.

* Hockeytown has had it rough so far this season. They lost a series of games before jumping to some six-game win streak. Now, the Red Wings are currently 15-15-4, 7th in the Atlantic Division. Their next game is at The Joe hosting the Buffalo Sabres tomorrow night. Their 2016 ends at Ottawa on Thursday. There was also that game at the Carolina Hurricanes that got postponed. Every win matters for Detroit right now. They made the postseason 25 straight seasons. 26 is in serious jeopardy at this point for one of the NHL's Original Six teams.

* I hear also that the NHL All-Star Voting is underway. So I'm sure you all will want to chat about who should be among the different All-Stars. I'm with RedDragon in saying Devan Dubnyk should at least be the starting goalie for the Western Conference. A goalie with so more shutout wins than any other surely has to be a favorite. In baseball speak, having Dubnyk is like having a pitcher who pitches shutouts or even having Perfect Games and/or No Hitters.

Do any of you want to assess your favorite team(s)? Want to talk about your favorite players and teams? Any NHL musings of your own? If so, feel free to do so.

[UPDATE] MIN is in Western Conference, COL is in Eastern Conference. So no W.C. Finals. Changes made.

So it looks like Columbus and Minnesota both won tonight. Columbus took down Boston 4-3 in Columbus, and Minnesota won 3-2 in Nashville in Overtime. Congrats to these two teams on their wins. Sadly, it's another loss for the Detroit Red Wings, falling in Hockeytown 4-3 to Buffalo. The Dallas Stars weren't afraid of facing the Arizona Coyotes in Phoenix. The Desert Dogs (or the 'Yotes) fell 3-2 to Dallas.

Congratulations to the other winners of Tuesday night's action, including the eventual winner of SJ at ANA.

One last time for 2016... Wednesday Night Rivalry. Who wants it? We got five games this Wednesday night. The NHL will do all they can to make this final Wednesday of 2016 anything but boring. Check out tonight's schedule:

* CAR Hurricanes at PIT Penguins
* TOR Maple Leafs at FLA Panthers
* MON Canadiens at TB Lightning
* PHI Flyers at STL Blues (NBCSN Wednesday Night Rivalry)
* LA Kings at VAN Canucks

Yahoo! Sports will be streaming the game between Toronto at Florida. Enjoy some hockey tonight.
