Wonder if this is related:
Nintendo's war on its fans continues. Nintendo of America has notified competitive fighting site Shoryuken that they do not have permission to broadcast Super Smash Bros Melee for its upcoming Evo 2013 tournament. On the stream, the game will be replaced by a mix of Persona 4 Arena and King of Fighters 13 as a result.

Nintendo's decision to block Smash Bros from the Evo stream echoes another decision made earlier this year, which prevented creators of Let's Play style videos from monetizing their content. Nintendo defended their action at the time saying that their policy will "ensure Nintendo content is shared across social media channels in an appropriate and safe way."

With a new Smash Bros game coming for Wii U and 3DS, one would think Nintendo would not only appreciate any added coverage of the franchise, but would want to actively support their fan community--the same group of people that voted for Smash Bros' appearance in Evo to begin with.

Linky.

Exactly the kind of coverage Nintendo needs as the Wii U is bombing on the market. Especially after Melee only made it in to Evo in the first place after a $90,000 donation drive to charity.

I heard that they are not doing it anymore as the Nintendo videos are not going to there profit nor are there advertisements on their.

Youtube doesn't pay for video game stuff anyway. Only way they pay is if you get lucky or if you say in the description it's a tutorial explaining something. I would assume if you still wrote it's a tutorial video than you would get paid still. That makes it your content and not there's for the base of the video.

Was OK when/if they were doing it, it's not like they're taking the videos away.

OT, what's with all the hate for Nintendo? :indiff:

If it wasn't for Mario and Zelda, Nintendo would've died a long time ago. :dopey:

If it wasn't for Mario, Zelda, Smash Bros., Pokemon, Sonic Colours, the constant hope of a new (now on it's way) Pikmin, Star Fox, and a whole bunch of casual games which have attracted newbies into the gaming world, Nintendo would have died a long time ago... :P Honestly, based off the bit which actually matters, THE GAMES, Wii U looks like a far better console than the PS4, let alone the XBone.

They could re-release the Gamecube and Game Boy Advance right now, and as long as there were new games from their key franchises, people would still buy them.

Hell, I'd buy a Gamecube if they re-released it. Brilliant console. I'm not sure how the Wii managed to be a step down from the level of graphics that thing got, but it actually was.

Anyway, back on topic. If Nintendo own the copyright to the games being used in the video, then legally they do have the right to ask for a cut of any profit being made. However, they do not own the rights to the commentary provided by the let's player, in which case they find themselves on dubious legal ground. They should at least split some of the profit with the owner of the copyright to the commentary, otherwise what they are doing is exactly the same as what the Let's Player was doing to begin with. Taking someone else's content and making profit solely for themselves from it.

That said, at least they're not taking the video's down.

Ugh... Wouldn't it be sufficient for Nintendo to add their ads? I mean, taking all the revenue that's being made is just downright nasty. Let's play are, quite often, a good way to advertise games. Well, unless they're actually pretty ****** and the publisher wants them to stay hidden from the public for as long as possible.

Plus, it just pisses people off. It's negative PR, why would you want that, as a company? I absolutely don't get it. Of companies from other industries would be doing something like that, they'd be belly up in the water in a heartbeat. But... The large gaming companies can do whatever they damn well please. You gotta wonder why. Is it that almost-monopoly they have?
