I agree. Despite being a huge Initial D fan, I agree that it's had a very negative effect on the automotive community, much like TF&TF had, mostly affecting inexperienced and ignorant people who were/are unable to realize that the TV series is a far cry from reality. The popularity of the Sil-Eighty is an effect of Initial D's popularity. I like the 180SX in its intended form.
In a way, actually, doing a Sil-80 conversion is similar to rice. It originated with serious drifters, who used the Silvia fronts to replace the more expensive 180SX fronts, when they were damaged drifting, and was eventually copied by poseurs whose only interest was impressing people and making them think their car was something it wasn't. In that way, it was very similar to the rice attempt at visually re-creating a race car. You might as well kick dents into your car and claim you got them drifting.
Still, I do think the Sil-80 is kinda cool looking, and if I was offered one, I wouldn't turn it down.
