This time of year is a particularly good one to visit the western reaches of Germany.
As the River Rhine weaves majestically along steeply-sloping valleys, ambling past vineyards growing Reisling grapes and forests where the autumn leaves are beginning to change colour, one could be forgiven for thinking that PH has completely lost the plot.
Not so, because this part of the world also features perhaps the most fabulous race track on the planet, and its from here that we have news of a new production car record.
To date, the best any production car could manage to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife was Walter Röhrl’s 7 minutes 32.4 seconds which he achieved at the wheel of a Porsche Carrera GT.
Now, the boys from Pagani have cracked this with a Zonda F Clubsport, which stopped the clock at 7:27:82.
Although we don’t know who was at the wheel, we do know that the car used was actually that of a willing customer, who was up for allowing his car to attempt to make 'Ring history.
The Clubsport has carbon fibre everything, a reworked 641bhp 7.3-litre AMG Mercedes V12 and Pagani claims a 0-62mph time of 3.6sec and a top speed of almost 215mph.
However, while this time is properly quick, the record for a road-legal car is still held by Radical, when Michael Verger’s lapped the track in an SR8, in 6 minutes 55.
