And the spire is gone...The Notre Dame in Paris is burning down and it looks like there will be little to nothing left of it.

I hope quasimodo got out in time.
and there has also been a debate on why Paris doesn't seem to have the same airborne fire-fighting equipment as, say, California
Other gems have included astute observations on how fires can result in bits of the building "completely collapsing in on itself" and there has also been a debate on why Paris doesn't seem to have the same airborne fire-fighting equipment as, say, California ("they just don't normally need that kind of equipment in the French capital")... it would be comedy gold if it wasn't so dumb. And the night is young...
The stones can be repaired easy enough by a skilled stonemason assuming the fire is put out soon. The woodwork and stuff inside on the other hand.Well, to be fair he said "perhaps" it will help. We will ignore the fact that the stones heated and then cooled might cause them to shatter, exacerbating the problem.
I was making fun of the water tankers comment. This can be rebuilt. Of course, lets hope it doesn't take as long as the Sagrada Familia. The stones can be repaired easy enough by a skilled stonemason assuming the fire is put out soon. The woodwork and stuff inside on the other hand.

This is a great tragedy. Not just the apparent lost of the cathedral that has stood for nearly 800 years, but all the art and historic items and documents inside.
The roof and the spire are gone. I'm wondering if they can salvage the stone.Reports saying that the Chief firefighter had said he is unsure that they can put the blaze out and may just have to let it burn. Tragic.
Which is extraordinary, and hopefully will remain true.No known injuries or death have been reported to the fire.
Yes, but the cost of rebuilding Notre Dame cathedral would be in Seine. This can be rebuilt.
See my edit. Looks like it's doubtful the building can be saved. The roof and the spire are gone. I'm wondering if they can salvage the stone.
OP should note below:
No known injuries or death have been reported to the fire.
It didn't look that bad, but that was just the exterior. The stones could shatter.See my edit. Looks like it's doubtful the building can be saved.
