If you watch the video of the new Honda Civic Type R setting its claimed ring record which has a roll bar in it you will see that they stop the timer at 50-100 meters before the point they started it at. Really is a jokeThe only lap, which actually a lot of the manufacturers use, is the Sport Auto lap. Meaning the start is at the exit of the old pit lane, and the end is right after the T13 turn.
Edit: The only lap that matters for me.
And with the Start/Stop button pressed at different areas. In effect it's always been a comparison of cars you can't buy driven by people who aren't you on effectively different tracks in different weathers according to stopwatches held by different people.
Isn't it? With speed limits on the track it going to be losing revenue with races, tests and I would imagine casual visitors in there rented sport/super cars. From a track owner perspective this could be suicide.
Actually, it's doing the polar opposite. Changing the track every year to suit increasingly unsuitable demands about what's able to run on there is what will bring uncertainty to the forefront, and it will be a lot of money down the drain each and every year. From a track owner perspective this could be suicide.
Time will tell but if car markers go elsewhere then it will prove a failure.Actually, it's doing the polar opposite. I think you mean Sonora Raceway!! If you'd do it on the Hockenheimring or VIR or Laguna Seca or Senora or whereever, you would never had the exact same conditions with every test.
Car manufacturers are not going anywhere because the track isn't used exclusively to put in 100 laps just so they can then go for the fastest lap time. As @20832 appropriately said,Time will tell but if car markers go elsewhere then it will prove a failure.
The Nordschleife still offers are very particular set of variables that no other track can really offer, therefore I wouldn't be too much concerned about the fact that manufacturers like Aston Martin, Jaguar, BMW and so on will move their development facilities.
Just to put this into perspective, one lap of the Nordschleife equals about 200km on the real road in terms of wear and tear.
I'm surprised that track still exists, the Isle of Man is very Anti-Nanny state though so they have no issue holding a race equlivent to watching Gladiators fighting to the death.Time to move to Isle of Man
So much this. And ban all unsuitable categories (I'm not going on another GT3 rant today). People act as though it's an absolute deathtrap, but it's just like any other tight track. If you go wide, you're likely going to scrape an armco rather than have acres of tarmac to carry on as normal, but that can be said for countless racetracks around the world. It's track first, not cars first, and that applies to every venue in the world. But, all they need to do at the Ring is to better secure spectator areas so people cannot get into areas that they shouldn't be getting into.
They do still have motor bike races at Isle of Man right ? Don't see anything stopping a car to do a lap there or is there a cop patrolling 24/7 ?
I wonder when will we see this kind of lap again in the future, a great driving by Gan-san ( huge respect for the old man ) and a great car at a legendary track
I'm sure if they did that, it would cause quite a couple of inconveniences. It's not a permanent circuit... they can't just shut down the road and set up the 30 mile course whenever a manufacturer wants to show up to do a lap.

There's no way the manufacturers are going to agree to that.Need to shut down ? Maybe a venue for several days every few months could do it, a group of cars from manufactures each day ?

Locals would flip. That isn't viable. There are schools, businesses, hospitals and just people generally trying to move around.Need to shut down ? Maybe a venue for several days every few months could do it, a group of cars from manufactures each day ?
Yeah, because it was a world record attempt during TT week. 10 minutes out of the schedule isn't going to cause any disruption, and it wasn't manufacturer booked. There is literally no point in a manufacturer doing it.Subaru did it already at Isle of man, so other makes should be able to do it as well.
The mountain road (A18) has no speed limit anyway...They do still have motor bike races at Isle of Man right ? Don't see anything stopping a car to do a lap there or is there a cop patrolling 24/7 ?

I don't see what the obsession with massive tracks is. The 'Ring is used primarily for extreme road testing, because it's extremely harsh and can simulate a variety of conditions at one given time. The lap time is just a manufacturer grudge match that can be done on any race track.
