Nurburgring Lap Records Banned?

The only lap, which actually a lot of the manufacturers use, is the Sport Auto lap. Meaning the start is at the exit of the old pit lane, and the end is right after the T13 turn.

Edit: The only lap that matters for me.
If you watch the video of the new Honda Civic Type R setting its claimed ring record which has a roll bar in it you will see that they stop the timer at 50-100 meters before the point they started it at. Really is a joke

In effect it's always been a comparison of cars you can't buy driven by people who aren't you on effectively different tracks in different weathers according to stopwatches held by different people.
And with the Start/Stop button pressed at different areas.

From a track owner perspective this could be suicide.
Isn't it? With speed limits on the track it going to be losing revenue with races, tests and I would imagine casual visitors in there rented sport/super cars.

Aren't they already on the verge of failure like every year?

Actually, it's doing the polar opposite. Changing the track every year to suit increasingly unsuitable demands about what's able to run on there is what will bring uncertainty to the forefront, and it will be a lot of money down the drain each and every year.

Time will tell but if car markers go elsewhere then it will prove a failure.

Car manufacturers are not going anywhere because the track isn't used exclusively to put in 100 laps just so they can then go for the fastest lap time. As @20832 appropriately said,
The Nordschleife still offers are very particular set of variables that no other track can really offer, therefore I wouldn't be too much concerned about the fact that manufacturers like Aston Martin, Jaguar, BMW and so on will move their development facilities.

Just to put this into perspective, one lap of the Nordschleife equals about 200km on the real road in terms of wear and tear.

They do still have motor bike races at Isle of Man right ? Don't see anything stopping a car to do a lap there :) or is there a cop patrolling 24/7 ?

I wonder when will we see this kind of lap again in the future, a great driving by Gan-san ( huge respect for the old man ) and a great car at a legendary track :P

But, all they need to do at the Ring is to better secure spectator areas so people cannot get into areas that they shouldn't be getting into.
So much this. And ban all unsuitable categories (I'm not going on another GT3 rant today). People act as though it's an absolute deathtrap, but it's just like any other tight track. If you go wide, you're likely going to scrape an armco rather than have acres of tarmac to carry on as normal, but that can be said for countless racetracks around the world. It's track first, not cars first, and that applies to every venue in the world.

It's not a permanent circuit... they can't just shut down the road and set up the 30 mile course whenever a manufacturer wants to show up to do a lap.

I'm sure if they did that, it would cause quite a couple of inconveniences.

Need to shut down ? Maybe a venue for several days every few months could do it, a group of cars from manufactures each day ?

The Isle of Man is famous for motor bike racing, if motor bike can do frequent races there, cars can do it too.

I don't like Bikes racing there let alone Cars.

Road racers are a stubborn bunch but seriously that course is near suicide, I couldn't see a car company that would want to be attached to a race held there.

Locals would flip. That isn't viable. There are schools, businesses, hospitals and just people generally trying to move around.

I don't see what the obsession with massive tracks is. The 'Ring is used primarily for extreme road testing, because it's extremely harsh and can simulate a variety of conditions at one given time. The lap time is just a manufacturer grudge match that can be done on any race track.
Subaru did it already at Isle of man, so other makes should be able to do it as well.
Yeah, because it was a world record attempt during TT week. 10 minutes out of the schedule isn't going to cause any disruption, and it wasn't manufacturer booked. There is literally no point in a manufacturer doing it.

They also reserve private times at the Ring to run these record laps, because they don't want anyone interfering in their particular method of counting their lap time and using trick parts.

You need to watch the video, it was Subaru sponsored TT and they are promoting it and proud of it :)

In 2011, Subaru already did a TT there, so it's not the 1st time :

"It’s the second Thursday of the TT fortnight. In between bike races, Higgins and the team from Subaru America are attempting to set a new four-wheeled lap record. The record they’re here to beat – an average lap speed of 102mph – was set by legendary moustachioed rally driver Tony Pond in a ‘standard’ Rover 827 Vitesse in 1990 and recorded for posterity on VHS. But that was over 20 years ago, so why has no-one tried to beat it since? Plenty have tried to organise an attempt (including yours truly) but it’s not easy to get permission. In fact that’s a massive understatement. To give you an idea, when someone from Subaru America first contacted a government minister on the island, he was apparently stopped mid-pitch and told ‘The answer’s no.
Now 🤬 off’, followed by the phone being put down.

Somehow, though, Subaru eventually managed to persuade the authorities to let them have a crack at it. They’d have to organise their own clerk of the course for each ‘demonstration run’ and the roads would have to be meticulously shut down and opened up quite separately to the TT races going on either side. Effectively they would be running a separate event.

‘When Pondy had his second attempt in 1990, that was actually the last time I was here for the TT,’ Higgins tells me. ‘It’s been a dream of mine to do the TT course in a car ever since. I’ve been trying very hard for the last ten years and I’ve actually had three manufacturers on board and willing, but they just couldn’t get the go-ahead. Amazingly Subaru has managed to get it and here we are!’"

And in 2014, Subaru did it again, the already posted video above :)

This news reminds me of how everyone in this year's Gumball is limited to normal highway speeds - tragic!!
