I saw that happen live yesterday, and it was awesome. Everyone was extremely testy all day on CNBC, but its been a lot of fun watching and learning on there. I'm looking forward to the Cramer shindig next week (or the week after?) with the FDIC chairman. Should be interesting...

I flipped on Street Signs while eating lunch and Jim Cramer has so far called the stimulus package just a pay off for the people that got Obama elected and said that he cannot give any advice related to banks because Geitner has disappeared. Before the commercial break he was pleading with Geitner to give them a call and tell them something.

Hes been hard-charging Geitner for the past week or so, and had a big rant about it last night on his "Outrage of the Day." When I do have my days off, and 6PM rolls around, you can bet I'm a part of Cramerica.

If you want to learn something, the last place you should be going is to CNBC. Rick Santelli is the only sane permanent fixture on that network. The rest are a bunch of Greenspan foot-kissers. Steve Liesman (the guy arguing against Santelli) is the biggest fruit of all.

You haven't been watching this week have you? They've been talking against the constant rate cuts that Greenspan was guilty of.

Yeah because now it's the "in" thing to do. Where were they when he was cutting?

I can’t believe there are serious murmurs about nationalizing the banks, including from Greenspan. I want my damn country back – the America that showed the world how freedom begets prosperity.

Seriously, even though Obama won?

For someone who was so determined to convince us he wouldn't be a socialist he really needs to either stamp out these rumors or admit that he was blatantly lying during the campaign.

Something interesting I saw:
Associated Press
Obama pledges to cut deficit in half

President Barack Obama has vowed to cut the country's budget deficit in half by the end of his first term. Obama laid out the guiding principle of his budget policy at a White House conference. He said he believes the time has come for "a frank conversation" about the problem and said the deficit, projected to total $1.3 trillion this year, must be brought under control.
Obama declared the country "cannot and will not sustain deficits like this without end."
He also said that he wants to reinstate a pay-as-you-go policy on federal spending programs, get rid of programs that do not work and end tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas.

Calling for fiscal restraint even while federal spending soars, Obama summoned allies, adversaries and outside experts to a White House summit Monday to address skyrocketing budget deficits and announced $15 billion in Medicaid money to states from his $787 billion economic stimulus package.
"As we take the steps that we must to get through the crisis we're in now, we will not lose sight of the long-term," Vice President Joe Biden said as he opened the event. Obama's No. 2 promised that the administration would be frank with the public about budget challenges, though he also said there was a need to reform the nation's health care system and wean the United States off heavy reliance on foreign oil.
The summit came one week after the president signed into law the gargantuan stimulus measure designed to stop the country's economic free fall and, ultimately, reverse the recession now months into its second year. The new law is certain to add to this fiscal year's deficit, which the administration projects will be $1.5 trillion.
Obama led the summit to address the nation's future financial health after meeting with Republican and Democratic governors who are poised to benefit from his unprecedented emergency spending-and-tax cut measure.

I know a way! Hey Obama! That thing you signed last week? Don't do that. Thank you, and I'll expect my consultancy check in the mail next week.

This should be good. So, after taking part in a 10% increase to the deficit he will now cut it in half? Who wants to take bets it is a convenient opportunity to raise taxes?

And I found this good:
Obama's No. 2 promised that the administration would be frank with the public about budget challenges,
Does that mean allowing us an opportunity to puruse your plan, comment on it, and write our legislators before it is voted on? Or does it mean not having enough time to have even our legislators read it and then telling us what it says after the fact?

I'm just curious because of the last two major economy affecting bills passed the one that was discussed at large wound up doing things that no one on Congress realized it could do.

Mr President, please recognize that you are the president, not Nancy Pelosi, and act like it. At least then I don't have to read lines like,
Talk of a commission to deal with Social Security produced such blowback from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) that the administration gave way -- at least for now. This is not a positive omen. "Social Security, we can solve," Mr. Obama said in his visit to The Post. Yes, but not by ignoring it.

What's it going to take for people to bust out the flaming pitchforks?

For someone who was so determined to convince us he wouldn't be a socialist he really needs to either stamp out these rumors or admit that he was blatantly lying during the campaign.

Just to answer this from earlier, The White House said it remained committed to avoiding any kind of nationalization of the banking industry. But, if they keep gobbling up shares of Citi and all that, its hard to know for sure what will happen.

Still, I'm interested to hear what Obama has to say tomorrow night. Moreso, what the Republicans have to offer against it.

I'm trying to understand your perspective, but it's very difficult. You see, I don't give a rats ass what Obama or the republicans have to say tomorrow. None of them have any clue what they're talking about when it comes to economics. Their policies will do nothing but harm the country. They're all taking us in exactly the wrong direction at exactly the wrong time.

...so what Obama has to say means nothing to me (never has). And what the republicans will counter with is equally meaningless.

I'm interested because it ultimately effects everything I see around me. Furthermore, I enjoy the politics of politics, certainly coming out of my requirements for school and such. I like hearing multiple sides of the argument (and that includes what comes from the far right and far left, everything in between), in order to make the best judgment possible. Unfortunately, that may mean that my different beliefs may cause me to come to a different conclusion on these policies.

However, I will echo Omnis' statement. If everyone is so mad about whats going on, what exactly are they doing about it?

Mobs bust out flaming pitchforks. Titans just shrug their shoulders.

They keep saying that, but there is talk of 40% stake in Citi, telling banks that have received bailout money what they can and cannot do in their business.

They can call it what they want, but the moment the government has enough vested interest in an institution to give them orders as a shareholder it is no longer a purely private industry.

Still, I'm interested to hear what Obama has to say tomorrow night.
I'm interested to see Pelosi's ventriliquist act too. Sure, it won't be an Edgar Bergen/Charlie McCarthy show, but it should be interesting.

What if he came out and said, "I'm letting the market do its thing and Pelosi can bite me."

I mean, it won't happen, but I'm just saying, "What if?"

However, I will echo Omnis' statement. If everyone is so mad about whats going on, what exactly are they doing about it?
Yes, what?

I wonder if I could put all my savings in gold bars and just stick them somewhere safe untill this all blows over. Maybe by the time they are done those of us left willing to actually practice a free market will be using gold.

Buying I Told You So bumper stickers in 3, 2, 1...
I'm already looking at "Don't Blame Me. I voted for Barr" magnets.

I already got my home-made, "Don't blame me, I voted for Ron Paul" shirt, my "Told you so" with Hayek, Paul, and Mises, and my "We've been warning you since at least 1850" with Bastiat and the other old economists.

I'm doubting that any "full" nationalization would actually occur, but then again, that may be a tough call. I simply don't know, and I'm getting the feeling that most of the people in Washington do not either. AIG is supposed to be having huge problems as well, and that mess is something I'd prefer to stay out of.

...Although I see Bernanke is speaking today. May be interesting...

Pelosi is in control? That's news to me...

They should have half an idea. It is their decision. And no, no one will do it fully in one step, but if you buy a little here and a little there over a few years the next thing you know the government has enough stake to be the only vote that matters in a shareholder's meeting. It never has to be full, just enough so that the rest doesn't matter.

Pelosi is in control? That's news to me...
Missed this did you?

And from what I hear the stimulus package was pushed through so fast because Pelosi had a flight to catch, and she didn't want to wait until the following Monday to vote on it.

Come on, even Jim Cramer is calling her President Pelosi.

Why did everyone go so crazy just now during Obama's speech when he begun the section on the national deficit? Twice. They were all hooting and hollering and smiling and clapping. It almost seemed like they were mocking the issue. "This deficit we have inherited...*big smile, hehe, GWB is a redneck*...This deficit...*everybody goes wild because they think it's hilarious*..."

Seriously.

Unsurprisingly, I was pleased by Obama's speech. I'm sure that shocks no one here. What stands out most to me, at least right now, was in regard to Iraq; Troops coming out within 19 months, the end of (wasteful) no-bid contracts, and the application of the cost of war to the yearly budget. You know, since wars cost money, and all that.

That, and the moment with the young lady from the school in South Carolina was touching. It was cool to hear Obama talking about her own personal activism, pleading with Congress to make sure that her school gets the help it needs. Seeing her up there with Michelle, so modest, it just made me feel good.

Overall, I just enjoyed it. Not nearly as awkward as the past eight years...

As a quick aside, I just found an interview that documents the specific kind of idiot politician that got us into this mess. Enjoy :dunce: :

Ah, and Jan Helfeld embarassing Nancy Pelosi too:

I didn't watch the speech, but...

...you like seeing people beg for money? Makes you feel good that she needs help and you can (partially) help her with someone else's money?

Yssman, I don't know what to think of you and everyone else who is so enamored by these charades. Why are you under such enchantment?

You know me, your regular Pinko-Commie board member who loves stealing tax dollars to properly fund our education programs!

EDIT:

Whether or not it was a "charade," its a good story. Its horrible that it took the attention of the President to get this school the money it needs to make necessary improvements, but nevertheless, having the kids work together to get something done (I thought) was cool.

Would it kill you guys to be positive about something for once? Regardless of politics?

Sorry, I don't consider throwing more money into the bottomless pit that is our education system a heartwarming topic.

Maybe if we talked about puppies or something.

Only if we let the free market decide the puppies!

Meh, its not worth it. Its well established that we disagree on policies here, and I'm happy to agree to disagree. I do enjoy our discussions, however and look forward to what comes next on the list of things to talk about.

Except that you're not. Didn't you vote for Ron Paul? Lol. It's one thing to be a hardcore 'kos type, but you confuse me because you seem to have a big mixture of attitudes that go together about as well as oil and vinegar.

... That's actually a better analogy than I thought. After all, who doesn't like oil and vinegar? Alas, they still don't mix.

Only if we let the free market decide the puppies!

It does decide the puppies though. It's a weird market, though, because there is a gross oversupply of dogs which creates the humane society giving them away for free. Yet, there is still a separate puppy market with insane prices. I predict this market will disappear in the absence of a booming economy. Indeed, most of the pet stores have closed up shop around here.
