But it just wasn't a goal. Even Liverpool fans are admitting it. He should have done better anyway, and like I said, if he hadn't have wheeled away, he could have thumped home the rebound.

But it was an encouraging performance from Carroll. That went some way to suggest he may come good for Liverpool next season.

I'm still not convinced it wasn't a goal. From the replays I've seen it is ever so slightly over.

Agree about Carroll though, as soon as he came on Liverpool were a rejuvenated side. I doubt that he will be back to his Newcastle form next season though.

Back to the Prem and it's advantage Tottenham for 3rd now.

I doubt that he will be back to his Newcastle form next season though.

He needs to be even better than his previous Newcastle form to justify a place in the Liverpool side. But, none the less, encouraging performance today.

Suarez rightly booked for dissent. Carroll's effort was hardly as clear cut as Freddie Sears', was it?

Better second half for Liverpool generally, but they've only a Mickey Mouse cup to show for their season as a whole. For a club of Liverpool's reputed stature and importance, the League Cup shouldn't be anywhere near their radar. Sign of a further decline, maybe?

I want to hear Alex.'s thoughts on it all but he hasn't been on for a few days, I don't think...

As for Chelsea, well done to Di Matteo. FA cup winner as a player, and now as a manager. But I still think it'll be the Champions League that decides whether he gets the job or not. And in case a few of you missed an earlier post of mine, Capello is after a Premier League job and following on from Scolari, Ancelotti and Hiddink, he's exactly the sort of well-travelled continental type who ticks Abramovich's boxes.

 That's someone who I expected to comment about Chelsea being undeserving.

Liverpool have been at this stage now for years now. I can't see it changing any time soon.

Certainly can't blame the officials for the goal.

Please not Capello. I hope they stick with Di Matteo regardless of the next 3 results. The team seem to be together and are winning matches. Don't fix it if it ain't broken, not that that will put Abramovich off.

Really! Can't beat Norwich? At Emirates!

Hello Europa League, bye bye Van Persie.

We're in a spot of trouble, but losing today ensured that the cracks in the club weren't papered over. Carroll made KD look a bit of a fool today, it was an almost Gerrard-esque performance in terms of dragging the team with him. He has been improving for months and today is another example of that. We should keep him. Kenny should leave though, I'm happy to have Rafa back.

Carra is finished and his lack of appearance today further confirms it. I wouldn't be surprised if he retires at the end of the season. A club legend.

As for the goal, it wasn't in, but it was also impossible to tell for the lino. Desperately unlucky and a fantastic save. The difference between us and them winning it today. The first 60 minutes were not good enough, had we played for the 2nd 45 like we did for the final 30 we would have won. Glad to have the Carling Cup in the cabinet but we should have won that today. Just like we should have won in Athens in 07. Unfortunately our Premiership team turned up for the first half, not the cup team. Henderson is struggling to take the pressure of playing for LFC, but so did Lucas Leiva and check how he turned out. (Best CDM in the world IMHO) - We overspent on Henderson, Downing and Carroll, but they have always given 100%. Liverpool literally haven't had one fast out and out winger since about 1998 and desperately need one for the next season. It could be all change this summer, just wait and see.

A bit unfair to decide whether he gets the job by beating a team that has already defeated Real Madrid and has reached the final, isn't it?

(If that's what Chelsea is thinking to do, that is).

This is Roman Abramovich we're talking about here...

He prefers well-travelled continental types. Di Matteo has only cut his teeth at MK Dons and West Brom, so Roman will probably look at someone like Capello.

Thank you City, thank you Villa :D.

Still, it is entirely possible Arsenal lose at WBA next week :indiff:

Arsenal have dodged a major bullet - a draw is enough against West Brom to secure a top 4 spot now, although it should have been done and dusted already. West Brom have been pretty good lately, though, only one loss in their last six games and three wins - Arsenal haven't won in four games on the trot now.

That said, 3rd is particularly important this year as Chelsea can still grab the 4th CL spot by winning the CL this year - not likely I know, but entirely possible. How Chelsea fans would love to see Tottenham (or Arsenal for that matter) finish in the top 4 and yet be denied a CL spot!

So long as Man City doesn't choke to QPR this coming weekend, they should win the EPL title. I seriously think they have it in them but to win but QPR will desperately want a win to ensure they don't drop to relegation zone.

The Blackburn v Wigan game is currently being held up because there is a chicken on the pitch, draped in a Blackburn Rovers flag

Only thing I can say on this is to do with golf and a man by the name Ian Poulter.. Or something like that anyway..

Indeed. The seeds have been sown.

If only we knew the thoughts of Chris Waddle.

Heh, Tim Vine's got nothing on me.

Ya kud bu the players, suggest that they've chickened out, but three teams go down and the league table does not lie. Blackburn did not play well enough over the course of the season.

Hard luck. If they keep their squad reasonably in tact, they should come back pretty soon.

Oh dear

Blackburn did not play well enough over the course of the season.
Eggactly. Yolk-ubu cracked under the pressure. I think Blackburn will have to shell out for some new players. Kean and the Blackburn supporters will be in a fowl mood, whereas Martinez and the Wigan supporters must be cock-a-hoop.

You have to feel for Steve Kean, the fans were hardly egging him on. I think he'l be given a real grilling by the owners.

Maybe they should farm the lower leagues for talent, but I can hardly see them flying next year.

This ... Is getting painful to read :P at least Blackburn go down with the distinction of beating united, the first relegated team to do so since the 1980's. But their supporters have not been classy this season.

In all seriousness, they sack Allerdyce, who despite being an arrogant git wasn't doing badly, then thrust his assistant into the hotseat with no prior managerial experience? It was a miracle they even stayed up last year. Look what happened at Wolves this year.

Owners deserve all the criticism. Big talk about Ronaldinho, Beckham and Raul when they should have hired a proper manager who would have brung them down to earth with the much needed quality to drive the team forward. Now they're paying the penalty, and while the buck does stop with Steve Kean, I absolve him of a fair portion of the blame. Same with Terry Connor, too.

Incredibly, Wigan live to fight another season. Beating United, Liverpool and Arsenal along the way. Wow.
