Seems to be a whole lot of Black Eyed Peas hating going on. Actually I have no opinion because I haven't exactly listened to any of their music.

Okay, wait. There's definitely a difference between being overrated and being a band that just a lot of people like. I don't think just because a band or singer is widely liked, like the Black Eyed Peas, they're overrated,

I can't believe in my previous posts I left out the #1 most overrated musician ever...

Bob Dylan

I want you to listen to this song and tell me why on earth you've ever heard of this guy.

Queen.

Why did they never sing about something?

Whereas the Arctic Monkeys are on the other end of the scale; they only ever sing about 'yoof'. "Ere comes a ri-yat vaaaan" is not genius, it's a complete tool trying to sing and ending up talking with a heavily emphasised accent.

While we're here, I'd like to nominate any modern RnB or Hip Hop artist who appears in the charts. You just know that there is unrecognised talent out there that does what they try to do so much better.

Listen to 50 Cent after listening to Abdominal & Format and it sounds like he's had a stroke.

But that's how people talk in Sheffield. Just listen to Famine.

Chickenfoot

I saw them on Leno and they were horrible, normally I don't hold superbands to a high standard but these guys fail to reach that point. There was no chemistry which in turn made the music seem artificial.

Nickleback, Lady Gaga, Kanye West, and many many others that I cant be bothered thinking of. :D

Tokio Hotel: Bland pop-rock for teenagers. And the singer looks like a hermaphrodite.

"Top XX" songs: Take a drum beat, add a singer (preferably a female showing leg), mix it up with a synthesizer. Cook it up two and a half minutes. Now you got a "Top XX this week" song.

Disney "singers": Stupid Jonas and stupid Hannah. Stupid bland songs for kids/teenagers. Good thing they are only a fad...fad-ing away.

Music in Discothèques: Drum beat + noise. And sometimes they sound worse than noise. You need to be high on something to enjoy it.

If Guitar Hero wasn't invented maybe I would be listening to THAT. Luckly, I've got some musical tastes.

Sorry to grave dig here but this seemed like a better place to talk about this then actually creating a new thread.

I think Taylor Swift is immensely overrated. Since every single radio station feels the need to play her whinny, teenage angst, songs, I can't seem to get away from listen to her music. Her lyrics are rather poor and I don't think she sings well at all. I don't understand how emo country is a genre that sells well but I guess it does. I'll just wait a year or two though, some scandal will come out, she'll phase out and we'll be on to the next teenage girl that thinks she's awesome.

I know a lot of people like her, and I'm all for people liking whatever they want, but I think she's overrated and I really think she can't sing for beans...especially after hearing some of her live performances. I'm a bit pissed at Kanye for bringing so much attention to her.

Oh and Kayne can be placed in this thread too, he's a terrible rapper.

Coldplay
Muse
Red Hot Chili Peppers
U2
Metallica
The Rolling Stones
Nirvana
Pink Floyd
Led Zepplin
Korn
Disturbed
Drowning Pool

Agreed on Coldplay, but on the Chili's and Led Zeppelin, well, never enter in to a room with me, you may walk out with one less arm!

Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, overrated???
Are you serious? Maybe they are dinosaurs and some songs of these bands maybe are overrated, but you can't say that the bands that have start an era are overrated. IMO.

You're trolling right?

and for what it's worth I think "Black label society" are very overated. ;)

Good luck.

Floyd is defiantly the lesser of the bunch but I still feel that they are overrated... Its the "Cool" thing to do to listen to these bands and wear there T-shirts.. At least it was when I was in high school.

You're trolling right?
Yeah, I'm going to troll when I'm on my last warning...

Grow up. Unless you are prepared to back that statement up... They aren't cherished by the media, they don't get there feet kissed on by every 16 year old and ever 60+ year old much like the other bands seem to be.. Maybe its just my area but I grew up in a area where The Rolling Stones are looked at to be the greatest band ever and I'm not exaggerating.

And if you guys think that I just listed bands I don't like then get your head checked. I'm a big Metallica, Floyd, Zepp, RHCP fan... The other bands I could care less about.. But I labeled those bands because when I was 13ish I was one of those huge fanboys that overrated these bands.

I think at the beginning of this thread I mentioned similar bands being over rated and got flamed. I still think Led Zeppelin is pretty overrated too.

Its because people associate overrated with bad... So if someone claims their favorite artist is overrated they freak out.

Yup, my favourite artist is Tiesto and I'll tell you right now he's pretty over rated.

As soon as I saw the thread title, I knew precisely what was coming.. that.^.

Since every single radio station feels the need to play her whinny, teenage angst, songs, I can't seem to get away from listen to her music.
Whiny teenage angst songs? Examples please? ;)

Her lyrics are rather poor
She writes her own songs, about her life experiences. When you release albums at 16 and 18, lyrics about your life aren't going to have *quite* the same complexity as if you released an album at 25. Simple as that.

However she does write about the ups and downs she's had in life very well imo. The second album (Fearless) is very autobiographical, and in my opinion (and a fair chunk of critics agree) her lyrics do an excellent job of telling a story about what she's been through so far.

I don't understand how emo country is a genre that sells well but I guess it does.
Emo country? You really haven't listened to her songs close enough if you think they're emo country. ;)

I'll just wait a year or two though, some scandal will come out
Good luck with that, she seems to have her head screwed on straight unlike most celebs these days (Miley Cyrus tried to pressure her into getting a tattoo, she refused. She does what she wants, not what others want her to do)

she'll phase out and we'll be on to the next teenage girl that thinks she's awesome.
Phase out? I doubt it. May go through a bit of a dip - that happens to pretty much every artist that's done more than two albums - but won't be fizzling out any time soon. Very rarely do you find artists that release awesome album after awesome album until the end of time.

I know a lot of people like her, and I'm all for people liking whatever they want, but I think she's overrated and I really think she can't sing for beans...especially after hearing some of her live performances.
That's your personal opinion, and I respect that ;) I do agree that she is, well... a bit underwhelming live however, but there are times where she's decent enough. Usually occurs with her slower/calmer songs - Teardrops On My Guitar springs to mind - although the Crossroads ep with Def Leppard was pretty damn good, SNL was decent (Untouchable was, YBWM not so much; perfect example of my earlier point) and Stripped was, on the whole, good.

In the studio if you mess up, you can try again. If you screw up live, you get pelted with tomatoes. Pressure does funny things to people. lol

Give her a bit and she'll get better live, trust me. She's barely 20, she's got a lot of years ahead of her to perfect her craft. ;)

I'm a bit pissed at Kanye for bringing so much attention to her.
She was already huge before Kanyegate - she wouldn't have made it into the VMA shortlist if she wasn't. Her self-titled first album went mostly under the radar, but her second one was a lot more prominent. First came across Love Story on the radio here around April last year, YBWM popped up a month later and Should've Said No - ironically from her first album - around August. All before Kanyegate.

Oh and Kayne can be placed in this thread too, he's a terrible rapper.
All rappers are terrible. With the *possible* exception of Eminem.

@ Sweetshop:

Now, my contribution to this thread:

Susan Boyle is overrated. If it wasn't for Britain's Got Talent nobody would have batted an eyelid if a Scotswoman that sung classical released an album without being in a TV competition.

Looks like I pushed someone's buttons the wrong way.

All I've ever heard Taylor Swift sing about is wanting some dude that she can't have and being sad about it. Take any emo song out there, it's pretty much about a guy wanting some girl he can't have and being sad about it. The only thing Swift does differently is that she doesn't encourage cutting yourself...although I've felt like I probably should because it would be less painful then her singing.

LeAnn Rimes started singing country at a young age and she was fabulous, Tanya Tucker was the same way. And then of course there is Patsy Cline who is possible one of the best female country singers of all times.

Maybe it's because we accept mediocrity now days, I don't know, but I can't see Taylor Swift being any different then other whiny teenage girls attempting to sing alla Hannah MonCyrus.

It's cool to be a fan of her work, but you just look like a tool when you get worked up over someone saying they dislike and artist you like. Pretty much all the artist I like are constantly attacked for this, that and the other thing. I don't care. It's just music and really when it comes down to it most celebrities are asshats anyway, so what do I owe them?

And give it some time, she'll do something stupid especially since she had her own place in Nashville now (the radio thought it was newsworthy). She's a 20 year old girl, on her own, with a ton of money and no parents to tell her what to do. She might be a celebrity but she's still a girl in the 21st century...things happen. Granted she probably won't Amy Whinehouse it but you never know.

How did I give off the impression you pushed my buttons the wrong way?

Calling me a tool for simply making some (valid) points was uncalled for.

You made some epic text wall post because I said an artist you like is awful and over rated based on my opinion, to me that seems like I pushed your buttons the wrong way. You didn't make any valid points what-so-ever, they were all subjective, so really all you did was give a counter opinion to my initial opinion.

And I said getting worked up over an artist makes you look like a tool, if you don't think you got worked up then obviously that doesn't apply to you. You just really need to get over it if someone says they don't like an artist you really like. I mean if you like them what's the big deal with others not liking them?

I mean if you like them what's the big deal with others not liking them?
I have no problem with that! I was just providing you with some food for thought, which you obviously don't intend on paying attention to. And in case you didn't notice, I actually agreed with you one one point.

You're not a fan, I am, let's move on shall we?
