I am not watching these featurettes they put out, I reckon they are beginning to show too much of the movie.

You're really paying to watch this movie for 1.5 to 2 hours of amazing special effects so I doubt seeing a short featurette will ruin the whole film.

If anything I think it adds to the premise of the movie since we now know that it's not going to be just Godzilla vs. Optimus Prime for 2 hours.

Got my hands on the graphic novel. Great read. If you haven't seen it already they've got a couple of pages of it on the Pacific Rim Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.507834512616184.1073741829.175282252538080&type=1

Review from UK Amazon :

5.0 out of 5 stars Pacific Rim - Original Soundtrack 25 Jun 2013

There's a nice mix of intensity and melody in the "Pacific Rim" score. The guitar is used quite frequently, something I love in movie scores because it is somewhat uncommon. The first few tracks on the album capture your interest immediately and place you in that world, and then fortunately the rest of the album continues to provide a quality music experience.

I have become a fan of composer Ramin Djawadi over the last few years, I particularly enjoy his work on "Game of Thrones". He has become very good at infusing epic action movies with emotion and heart. I think he was the right person to score "Pacific Rim". In some ways, this score reminds me of Djawadi's work on the first "Iron Man" film - and that's a good thing.

I'm very excited to see the movie, especially after hearing this score (which I think will work well based on the imagery I've seen from the movie). This soundtrack is worth a purchase, and its definitely something that you could listen to multiple times.

FAVORITE TRACKS
[1] Pacific Rim
[2] Gipsy Danger
[3] Canceling the Apocalypse
[7] Mako

Canceling the Apocalypse is one cool track, the intro guitar segment is great.

I just bought the digital copy of the OST, nice musical soundtracks, I can already imagine the visuals of the Jaeger while listening to it, EPIC guitar + melody !!

A hardcover book 156 pages thick : Man, Machines, and Monsters is the art-and-making-of book for the film.
There are stickers and two big poster, lots of concept art, set photography and lengthy writeup on the production.

A perfect companion for the Bluray release. Best not to read it before watching it at cinema :D Just to be safe from possible spoilers. One thing for sure, there are about 12 kaijus on the book.

There's a hilarious one star review on Amazon :

Touring the Bible Belt with my family's Southern Baptist Biblical Interpretive Dance Team last year caused me to miss most of my senior year. I ended up having to repeat it this year. Still not meeting all the requirements for graduation, I was supposed to take both day and night school classes this summer.
I blame this book for being the cause of one of the classes I ended up failing. As a result, I will be obligated to repeat the class this fall when it becomes available. This will put off my ability to tour with my family and to be honest, my sister and I had a duet lined up in Yiddish highlighting The Songs of Solomon found in the Old Testament and that upsets me.
For a final report this month I had to cover the 'ring of fire.' Knowing that the Pacific Rim directly tied into it, I cited most of this book in my bibliography as source material. It seemed like a win win for me and my Christian Science teacher Sister Pelosi.
Instead, she was outraged.
My findings of 'men unnaturally bonding with devil machines of destruction and ungodly creatures from hell were all an abomination before God' such as the tone of her passionate accusations.
The police were called and I had to meet with a social worker.
In fact, I was expelled from the school for the summer. The Chaplain said I needed time to reevaluate my erroneous thought process.
The rest of my summer has been spent trying to earn extra money going door to door selling magazine subscriptions and working a homemade snow cone shack with my Snoopy Sno-cone Machine using ice cubes from Burger King and Kool-Aid for flavoring.

:lol::lol:

My favourite part is the way the teacher criticises the reviewer for the content of the book being an abomination, rather than because the content of the book has absolutely nothing to do with the Ring of Fire.

He's obviously a troll. Looking at his other reviews, it's more of the same elsewhere.

I thought I would have to convince my wife to go see it with me, but I told her who was in it (Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba) she was like "... oh, ok! Let's go see it!".

Hideo Kojima the Metal Gear creator gave praise to the movie :)

I have never imagined that I would be fortunate enough to see a film like this in my life.

they all truly exist in the screen. Director Guillermo del Toro offers this spectacular vision of massive kaijus and robots in PACIFIC RIM.

This film is not simply a film to be respected, but most importantly, it let us dream the future of entertainment movies.

Pacific Rim is the ultimate otaku film that all of us had always been waiting for. Who are you, if you are Japanese and won't watch this?

I hope you would accept this inspirational love letter that had traveled across the Pacific, written by Director Guillermo del Toro.

Just came back from watching and it got me grinning and smiling from the start. It's like a dream come true. The classic Japanese Kaiju movie with not so impressive special effects, given the big budget of a Hollywood production.

I thought some of the Kaijus looked weird, like what the hell is Leatherback supposed to be, a mammal or a reptile? My scientific mind was boggled. But Knifehead though, really uses his head. :sly:

So much else I wanna say, but I'll let you guys experience it for yourselves. 👍

Agreed. The movie was everything I expected it to be and more. Prepare your inner 10 year old to be well and truly fulfilled by the film and the rest of yourself to be pleasantly surprised by how well put together the film was. Try grab a copy of the graphic novel prequel before you watch it. It might help with a few aspects of the movie if it's not your childhood that's dictating your decision to watch 👍

The special effects of the film was amazing. Don't quite understand what you mean?

If you watch one of Del Toro's featurettes on the film they go through the design process that they took with each and every kaiju. Personally I thought the variety and the purpose of each of them were nicely balanced and well selected for the film.

Well worth the 19 Australian Dollars I spent to watch it on the opening night :sly:. I'd go as far as saying that this is the best movie out in theaters at the moment. 9.5/10

He means compared to the minatures of the 60's monsters, with a ton more added. Which is somewhat unfair as actually those films had incredibly detailed landscapes.

I meant the classic Japanese Kaiju movie - man in rubber suit and miniature props - given a million dollar budget production and CGI equals a dream come true.

Is it extra expensive on opening night? Did you watch it in IMAX 3DDD? Or are movie tickets priced that way in Australia? :scared:
My ticket only cost me 9 bucks local, that's 3.08 AUD

Anyway, gonna watch it again tomorrow. Reason being I took a couple of toilet breaks in between and missed some parts. Also partly because I just want to watch it again. :D

Edit:

Poster by Yoji Shinkawa of Metal Gear.

There's a pretty nice Dyamic PS3 theme for Pacific Rim available on PSN. Its off the top picture in this OP, with animated effects.

I said I'm not gonna say anything but I can't help it after watching it again. :D

I must get a BluRay of this when it's out. I just love the battle at Hong Kong. The florescent Kaiju blood, the neon lights, the rain/water particles. Absolutely beautiful.

The only bad thing I can think of was the acting from the two lead, Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi. It was a pretty mediocre performance from them but it doesn't really matter much since the point of the movie is all about Jaeger vs Kaiju. Some of the lines were kinda cheesy, like "...let's check for a heartbeat. *PEW! PEW! PEW! at Leatherback* I guess it's dead..." And the famous "We're cancellin' the apocalypse!" Plus Mako's "...for my family!". Man, were they hard/fun to watch. Again, doesn't matter because Jaeger vs Kaiju!

In addition to the idea of a sequel - where the drift between Newt and the Kaiju brain might lead on to something - presented by Del Toro, I think a prequel could very well be made too. I wanna see the very beginning of the Kaiju attack. More backstory!

- The Axehead at San Francisco and how they finally kill it with conventional weapons and nukes.
- Tacit Ronin because he looks cool as hell.
- Coyote Tango fight Onibaba and saving young Mako because more backstory on Mako and Pentecost. Also wanna see those massive Gundam style cannons in action. :D
- Crimson Typhoon and Cherno Alpha on duty because we barely see them fight before they were sadly destroyed.

I also didn't realize the movie was two full hours long. It certainly didn't felt like it. I didn't get the urge to, say, check the time because some parts were boring. It had my attention all the way through, which is great!

All personal opinion BTW. :)

I saw it and enjoyed it, but my only problem was with the sound. It might have been a problem with the cinema, but it sounded like they had the bass turned all the way up, and it drowned out a lot of the dialogue.

Sound mixing is different from cinema to other cinema, I watched at cinema which at times have too much mid range and harsh trebles, watch the same movie on another cinema, the sound mixing were a lot better balanced, more likely something to do with the theater equipments/hardware + the person who manage it.

I'm going to watch it sometime next week when I can arrange group viewing :)
