Passed my test now onto finding a car. help much wanted:)

C)and I get a lot of crap just because of my name sometimes it is better to blend in then stand out.

This really is just a life lesson, you just have to learn to not give a hoot about what others think, not really easy, particularly at 18. But 3 years down the line you really won't give a toss.

As for the rest. You will be shafted on insurance if you go down Clio, Saxo, Corsa route and you will save money by buying something different. To be different from Famine, why not something that fits the small hatchback, but a bit older?

Of course as your Dad has the final say, just suggest it to him. Why spend £3-4k on insurance when you can spend £2k on something that still fits your needs? Remember too that next year, you may be paying your own insurance.

I've been searching around and on insurance the modern little hatchbacks (which aren't really an option for me as my knees become the crumple zone) with a 1. nothing engine are about the same to insure as a 1.8 with 120-140bhp, FWD or RWD from the 80s/early 90s.

Thanks to Famine I think I'll be replacing my Clio with an E21 316 in May :)

How much did the Fulvia cost to buy then?

£2,000 in 1992. I put another £500 into it to get it nice for driving, then discovered all the nasty bits in one afternoon taking the carpet up.

It's worth about £3k in its current (not very good) state, and with £3k of welding and sundries it will be perfectly driveable again, and worth about £7k.

I had a look at a 1990 E30 320 but it was quoting 5K plus insurance 👎. I guess a six-cylinder is still out of my reach.
I don't think this E21 thing is going to go ahead, though. With the prospective car being in Bristol and me having to wait until May until I build up my first year of NCB. The insurance is just too high without that year of NCB. Hopefully one simialir will be on sale nearer to me in may.

How come everyone else is getting good insurance quotes on these BMWs when mine are coming up at about £300 more than the usual hatchbacks? :(

Mog, I havn't compared that 316 to what my Clio will be come May, naming your parents as drivers does slash it a good chunk aswell.

That 316 E21 was quoted 2198 for me with my parents named on it.

I've had a look on Compare the Market
For me, having been driving less than a year, £500 voluntary excess, with both my parents as named drivers the results are as follows:

2002 Ford Ka 1.3
Fully Comp £3,690.31
TP F+T £2,635.61
TP £4,776.13

1983 BMW 316
Fully Comp £5,962.95
TP F+T £5,236.85
TP £6,879.97

2004 Vauxhall Corsa 1.0
Fully Comp £2,826.41
TP F+T £2,527.49
TP £3,813.38

1970 Morris Minor 1.0
Fully Comp £2,218.02
..........................................

OK, Compare the Market has decided not to work now, but I want the Minor!

Try confused.com it gave me much cheaper quotes.

It's an emergency escape solution, available on all old Lancia's. Some of the worst examples actually have a portal to Southend.

You guys are going mainstream insurers... They will dry bum rape you..
Try insurance brokers (AA Books) confused and all the other online comparison websites are crap.
Im paying half as much as the quotes stated above for my E30 318iS.
Hhah Thumbs up to the guy is thinking of changing his car to mine lol.
Head over to E30Zone.co.uk All the info you need is there.
Just watch for rust if you do find one.
320's are a pile of doo doo, a 318i is nearly as fast and about x761376438 times better on petrol. Sixes sound glorious, but alot are ropey and suffer from cracked heads (m20b25's) if they get a little hot.

Everyone avoid comparethemarket.com at all costs. I've had some ridiculous phone calls since using them. Idiots.

Same thing happened to me when I used them years ago. Way around it I found was to start entering the number from my old phone, thereby keeping the site happy and letting me avoid being called.

Failing that, for amusement's sake try putting in 0330 123 4150, which happens to be the non-0800 number for BT's main call centre.

Mog I just try to amuse myself when I get phone calls from car insurance places etc. I answer them like this guy.

A bit of an update, my Dads friend is selling his green ford fiesta, 2001 22k miles 1.25 3door for £600 so we are most likely going to get that within the next month :)

Couple of minor points.

22k in 10 years is appalling. People love low mileage cars, for some reason, but they come with a whole host of their own troubles - they're either rarely used (leave your car alone for 3 weeks and see what happens to it) or they're used on tiny, tiny journeys which result in colossal wear as they're only ever used from cold.

Assuming it's a genuine 22k miles, £600 is a bit low considering the value people place on low mileage cars. I know it's a ten year old base Fiesta, but that seems low...

Now, I can't speak of Mk5s (or Mk4 facelifts. Whatever), but I remember that Mk3s and - though I'd want confirmation from homeforsummer - Mk4s had a five digit odometer. That means that when they reach 99,999 miles, they tick over to 0 again. 22k could really be 122k. That's much closer to average miles, but you're looking at a false advert - and misrepresenting a car's mileage is actually illegal.

It is my dad work friend who only uses it to get to work (he lives close) and he says it has been in perfect condition and has been into the body shop to get rid of rust that was appearing. and I think my dad is having the AA look at it before, the reason its £600 is that he was offered to part ex it for £550 and he said to my dad who knew he was looking for a car for me that he could have it for 50 quid over what they offer, it is worth a lot more IMO but know we have to wait for the guy to buy his new car which my dad has said should be within the next month. I cannot wait to be honest in the easter holidays I walked the length of two marathons, just getting to and from work.

As far as I'm aware it depends on whether or not it's analogue. I just hopped downstairs and checked, and the digital one on El Sportka Rusto is definitely 6 digit, but obviously I've no idea when Ford started sticking those in Fiestas. For Kas it was 2003 though, I believe.

EDIT

Judging by the look of this ruined 2001 Freestyle, they come with a 6 digit digital one.

Correct-a-mundo. So it could well have rolled over.

I expect the difference between 22k and 122k would be fairly apparent even at a glance though. When I had my Mk4 with roughly 40k miles on it, my flatmate at uni had a Mk4 of the same type with 80k on it and it was definitely a lot more baggy.

Edit: Though as Jondot points out, the Mk5s presumably have digital ones. My Mk4 was definitely analogue.

Forgot, to update basically the guy has kept his fiesta, so we are still looking and its getting so frustrating as I am getting slaughtered on car insurance the cheapest being 3300 at the moment, but we are going to try adrain flux when we get a chance as we have heard they are reasonable.

^ I had the same problem as you first year. I only had a 1998 Peugeot 306 1.4, but the insurance was killing me. I found the cheapest company to be Egg in the end. Have you tried them?

another update still being murdered by insurance looking at buying a friends clio campus 56 plate at the moment. any ideas on how to reduce my qoutes? I live in a roughish area (cm1 2ah)At the moment im using Adrain flux for my qoutes because they have been the lowest so far but has anyone got any suggestions?

Thanks Paris.

I've just insured my 1.0l Polo for £2k with Hoot Car Insurance, keep in mind that everyone else wanted upwards of £3k to insure me (including Adrian Flux) I think I've done ok considering the circumstances.

Have you put your parents on the policy? Have you upped your voluntary excess? Have you messed about with details regarding where you park it, I've seen some quotes come out less if you park it away from the street you live on compared to on your drive because if someone breaks into your house they won't know which car uses the keys they've stolen (Crazy but true).

Ill give them a try And ill ask for if they are willing to do that are you allowed to let someone be insured on your car if they live in a diffrent household? and I may try that parking away from house thing.
Thanks Paris

I hope you can find a nice driving position in that. I couldn't, but then again I'm quite short.
