80's kit car stuff, I kind of like it. Had to be florida. I can just imagine myself driving in Miami holding my brick of a cellphone arriving at the club in one of these in the late 80s

I took a picture of this nearly all-white Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC in Miami Beach in 1986:

A Styling Garage Royale. Seems to be stock (except for the wheels), you say? Well, let's park next to a stock S-Class:

Yep, they really did cut a W126 in half and widened it. Why? More space for the telly. And three proper seats...

I wonder why no aftermarket companies are offering this service today, as opposed to just long-wheelbase modifications? Cost? Legality? Demand?

They probably lose some of their crash resistance and safety with a modification like that. And widening a vehicle doesn't mean the road gets any wider, either...

Love those pop-out cassette tape holders - those were pretty fresh back in 1985 (had a dozen of those).

Gemballa was the ultimate aftermarket "excess-or-izer" in the late-1980s too. Slant nosed, super straked, tons of interior lighting, luminescent paint, and cameras for side mirrors. Lots of power upgrades, but I don't remember seeing much in the way of actual verified road tests back then (at least in America). Completely nuts.

DP was the other one who made slanty 911/930s, based on the Porsche 935 racers, although more on the sporting, no-frills side of things.

I guess they also made a 944 Turbo shooting brake.
