Construction of the Rim Rock Drive on the Colorado National Monument in Colorado. My great grandfather was one of the workers that helped build this road.

One of the 2 tunnels:

On one particular part of the road they were building a "half tunnel", a tunnel you drive into that wasn't closed off on one side. Unfortunately it collapsed one day with workers inside. My grandfather was inside it minutes before it fell, but he had walked out to grab a tool moments before. Talk about lucky.

Use Of Ponies

Scott was on a previous expedition over 1901-04 and did not enjoy using dogs; how to best utilise them was not known at that time. This expedition used a mixture of dogs and ponies and is one reason the party struggled to make ground.

At The Pole

18th January 1912

As has become immortalised in popular history, the party arrived at the pole to find a Norwegian flag (Bonus Photo) , Amundsen having beaten them by 34 days.

The camera was operated via string.

The entire five-man polar party perished on the return back to their main base, just 11 miles from a secure depot.
