For those that don't know, that would be Raymond Mays, founder of the ERA and BRM racing teams, losing a drive wheel at Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb in 1924. Mays had tuned his Bugatti Type 13 to rev to 6000rpm, something Ettore Bugatti could only dream of at this time. It was too much for the half-axle and the wheel, complete with brake drum, flew off.

The car skidded to a stop inches away from a precipice.

Always wondered about the story behind your avatar. Thanks for sharing that. 👍

Edit: The models of "American Gothic" standing next to the painting.

Some old photographs of my hometown Haulerwijk.

The village originated(1756) to supply in the demand for turf/peat(see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peat) which was used as fuel for homes, ovens, brewery's and other industries.
Canals were dug to be able to transport the turf/peat over water with peat barges.

Nice pics there but the OP states a maximum of 5 per post, if I remember correctly. I think it's too keep the thread from getting bloated and lengthening loading times for us with slower connections.

(I'll just leave this here and run away)

So you left there for Spain? That makes you a well-seasoned traveller...

Airbus UK FC

Playing in Broughton, Flintshire, Airbus were formed in 1946 as a works team for the local aircraft factory and consequently their name throughout history has reflected the change in ownership of that company; from Vickers-Armstrong FC to de Havillands FC, Hawker Siddley FC, British Aerospace FC and BAE Systems FC.

Nicknamed "The Wingmakers" the club today is an independent, semi-professional club with sponsorship arrangements as opposed to a works team.

Taken today in their Welsh Premier game versus Bala Town I felt this photo magnificantly capturing a landing Beluga A300 in the middle of a football game was more 'mildly interesting' here than in the ACP thread. Their ground, The Airfield, is located alongside the runway of Hawarden airport.

Is it this Airbus facility where they transport the A380 wings by road for a short distance before they're loaded onto a canal boat?

Discovery Channel FTW!

Yes. That's where I'm from. A short road down to the river in Broughton, then on a barge along the River Dee up to Mostyn, out of the mouth of the river, where it is put on a proper ship and then transported to Tolouse.

For all other wings they use the Beluga. Watching those take off and land is really cool.
