Sorry for the missing the news report for round 1 of the current season, but this reporter was living it up on the beach in Charleston, SC at the time of the race. The life of a PITS reporter can be very stressful as you might understand. Anyway, we are catching back up this week after a very talked about race, Round 2 at Spa Francorchamps. If any of you are interested about Spa, please see my article about it's history in earlier posts.
Round 2 saw plenty of action. with
@Chad151515 &
@SGETI locking down the top two steps of the podium. The third, and final step, was occupied by
@Alex ONeill in Race 1, and OLD_BEAR in Race 2. Overall,
@Chad151515 &
@SGETI are only separated by 3 points going into Round 3. This is shaping up to be a very close championship race between these two. However, I would not count out
@Alex ONeill, OLD_BEAR, or
@aerolite. All three of these drivers are within striking distance.
To date this was the most controversial race that this reporter has been apart of. Out of Bounds incidents occurred too frequently over the course of both races. From my investigation, and speaking with race control, IR's were filed, and an investigation was opened on this issue. Race control found that during round 2 there were over 20 OOB infractions! This is far to many to be honest. Thus, based on this Race Control has taken the probationary action of enabling the Project Cars penalty system to assist with cleaning up the OOB's. Race Control also stated that if no further incidents are viewed that the Project Cars penalty system may be disabled at a later date. Either way, lets make sure that we all pay special attention to not going out of bounds as we head into the Hockenheim Race.
This week our special guest is
@Mike Lobban. We were able to catch up with him regarding his race at Spa. He had some interesting comments to make regarding Round 2.
Driver Spotlight: @Mike Lobban
1. The Lotus Type 40 Ford is a tricky car to setup, what were somethings that were focus points for you to get right going into Spa? Were you struggling more with Understeer or Oversteer?
It was a hard car to tune, there being only 2 tunes available for the car on the database. @SGETI to the rescue, he shared his setup and it only took a few tweaks to make the car comfortable for me. Understeer is a fact of life in most non race cars and the old chuggers. It is what it is, tightening up the turning radius of the wheel helps in the tight corners.
2. Spa Francorchamps is a very rewarding, yet extremely challenging track. What were some areas of the track that gave you the most difficulty? What sections did you enjoy driving?
Spaaaaaaaaaa, I found the hardest corner to be the last chicane into the old start finish straight, a bit of a blind braking point into that chicane. I lost a lot of time there almost every lap. Eau Rouge......I was nailing all night.
3. The weather conditions for the race were beautiful. However, that being said, there was some night time driving to contend with. How did this factor into your overall performance? Did the night time segments impact your overall pace?
Lemme get this out in the open....(no, I am not gay), I hate racing at night, I'm really old you know, it's hard for my decrepit, bloodshot, baggy old eyeballs to see in the distance at night. Give me rain or fog anytime over night. I don't think I was the only one with issues.
4. The Lotus Type 40 Ford was a bear on tires, but even more so on the brakes. In you pit strategy did address either of these issues, i.e., repairing your brakes or changing the tire pressures? How did the brake degradation affect your braking points on track?
My very close friend and foe, @aerolite suggested to repair brakes every pit stop, it only took a second more in the pits and voila, fresh brakes every 10 laps. I also keep my brake force pressure down low, about 80% or lower to stop lock up. I never raced in a tuning league before this series and let me tell you, it opens up a new dimension in the game from me. To feel every little tweak is amazing. I am also more confident racing in the "wanker" rooms.
5 & 6 Please provide a summary of how your drive went in Race 1, Race 2?
Race one was a bit of a cluster-fudge, someone hit me in the first corner which pushed me into someone else. By trying to miss him, I dun spun out man, which put me right at the back, but I fought back to finish not last.
Race two was more competitive for me running fairly close to the fast guys up front, @HazardLvL4 and I were almost glued together. I think I finished 4th.
7. You thoughts / concerns on the OOB issues that were present during the race? What are your feelings on the probationary enabling of the PCars penalty system?
I would rather do a controller rant than rant again about OOBs. My views are in line with @aerolite, race within the rules and the issue goes away. Till then, use the in game penalty system to clean up the perpetrators dirty driving. It can be frustrating to be penalized for someones mistake, but I would rather that than someone getting away with driving OOB all the time.
8. Any comments you would like to add?
I have to thank Steve Busby (@aerolite ) for turning me on to this thing called Snail. For years I have played racing games but never had the confidence to race online. I hadn't talked to him for a few months but when I did, he put the sheep he was riding aside and raved about this cool and clean league he had just joined. Well, two years later I still look forward to racing with the "boys" a few night a week. In fact, I hardly watch TV anymore.
I think most of you guys know that I am usually highly medicated while racing, so don't ask for lap times, 'cause I forget, where I finished......I forget, who did I just pass? I forget, saving replays.....I forget. Get the point. Lol. I like to race, but am a little slow on comprehension sometimes, it's not the meds......really. Oh look..... a squirrel.
I feel Round 2 will be a pivotal learning point for all of us moving forward. Many great things have fallen out from the investigation into the OOB's. One, particular item is the racing school being established by
@FlipJ. This is going to be great asset for all of us, regardless of skill, to get better. To date there has been one class so far, and it was extremely informational. Just covering the basics drivers who were there were able to make drastic improvements to their lap times. It was also nice to hear the dialog between drivers seeing others' lines and asking questions as to why they take them. This is the kind of dialog we need as a league to make sure we are always getting better. In my professional world of what I do for a living we call this "Continuous Optimization". Overall, I can't wait to get back on track with everyone for Round 3. Until next time, PITS Reporting will be watching you, from the racing line.
