Playstation Classic

One key factor that convinced me to get the NES and SNES classics was that I don't own any other Nintendo consoles, which would allow me to access their e-shop and buy those games. The PS classic on the other hand... well I already own a PS3 and 4. And Tekken 3 is the only game confirmed so far that isn't on the store.

My point is, I'm sure the PS classic will be a great product, but I think it holds more value to gamers currently sitting on the Microsoft or Nintendo side of the console divide.

Actually the inclusion of Tekken 3 makes this the first time that game has been available since its launch/discontinued production. Due to licensing issues around the ‘Gon’ character it’s not been available digitally.

Which makes its inclusion a pretty big deal, it also happens to be one of the best Tekken games

I only just realized this what they should have done:

These things are just "official emulators". With licensing issues and limited space for games, there's just no point. They're banking on people that sold their early consoles and still have nostalgia for them. The problem with that is that most people that still have nostalgia for the classics usually still have the original consoles to play them on.

I still have my original PSX and all the games for it, yet I’ve pre-ordered this rude boy.

It’s a cool box with some great games, and they allow you to play them over HDMI. For the price and the games on offer, it’s not a bad package

Well, it also cannot be overstated how much people love gimmicky crap that's trendy either. Someone could buy a PS3 for $50 and a bunch of PSX games (be it on PSN or used), but why do that when you can play them in a worse way but it looks so cute.

The only reason this sticks out egregiously more than Nintendo and the 4 million times Sega has done it is because of the crap Sony was saying at the beginning of the console generation.

I've actually had the thought multiple times to buy a cheap PS3 and get Demon's Souls, Killzone 2, BLACK, and some other gems I dumped so many hours into.

Was rather interested in this at first, because I never had a PS1back in the day but I've already got the clasic editions of the NES and SNES that I really don't use all that much. Dont think I need another dust collecter.

20 games is a bit on the low side anyway,

I think this is probably going to flop. The general feeling going around seems to be lots of hype and excitedness followed by clear thinking then apprehension . I never owned a PS1 and would have totally bought this... then I read about it.

The bottom line is the Playstation was successful for its wide range of titles, not a handful of masterpieces. To offer such a small amount of games, frankly some of which are irrelevant, is such a stupid move. Of the 5 games confirmed so far only 2 are in the top 20 best selling games on the system, the other 3 don't even make like the top 100. If these are the ones they lead with it doesnt bode well for what other games are going to be announced. You just know licensing is going to destroy this, for example THPS and Tomb Raider? no chance!

This is one classic console that couldn't afford to not play disk based games. They cannot pull a 'SNES Mini' because Sony is nothing like Nintendo. Hardware wise it a cool looking little piece of kit but its a poor effort feature wise imo. Plus you could just buy a PS1, or a PS2 or a PS3...

Then they couldn't sell you a $100 mini console that replicates what a $30 Raspberry Pi and a YouTube Tutorial can do. But I do agree, all future consoles that use discs should allow for emulation of previous disc-based games. I can't imagine from a technical perspective it's all that complicated to do since MS adds more stuff monthly to the XB1.

Disk based emulation is extremely easy to do, Sony no longer chooses to do it because as you said, it sells things like this and also helps sell new games rather than fueling the sales of used retro games which they don't get a cut from.

The chip required to give the PS4 1/2 BC would cost like $5, with 3 maybe $15. Frankly if the PS5 doesn't play 1-4's games it would be pathetic because MS made it all happen to turn the XB1 around.

There are enough collectors who buy this without a batting an eyelid.

Indeed you can use a Pi and have all the games you can find, not limited to those 20. And then have the NES and SNES etc games in there. There are some decent cases for it to look good too. This is more of a collector "there I have it" thing.

The same was said of the NES Classic and the SNES Classic, both sold out world wide.
If the PSX was successful for it's wide range of titles, why would they then only limit it to the top selling titles?

TGS has barely started, which is where this thing was announced, so those titles probably resonate more with a Japanese audience, hence their inclusion.
I was disappointed too that it wont support disc based PSX games, but this thing is tiny, I don't think its physically big enough to hold discs, let alone all the gubbins needed to play them. Then those internals only add to the cost and bulk of the system designed to be small, cheap and robust.

EDIT: look how tiny it is! You could probably fit it inside the originals disc tray, let alone it being able to play discs!

Hardware emulation of the PS3 is never going to happen, at least not for a long time. The Cell is a giant, expensive ****ing piece of garbage.

Why not?

Correct, but hypothetically doesnt the PS4 have the power to emulate the PS3 when you insert a PS3 disc?
Which is why I said hardware emulation and... no... that software emulation on PC requires decent rigs (even modest rigs outperform a PS4) and then it doesn't support all games. An example being MGS4, that rude boi used a double density blu-ray and due to how it was built around the PS3 early in its life, the technology is built around the cell... so it's never left the system

Understood, but still they could emulate ps1/2 games right? They could hypothetically just give the OS an update to read those Roms from a CD/DVD?

Oh yeah they could 100%, but why would they when they can resell you those games digitally.
The cool thing about this miniPSX is that they are clearly pushing for the more obscure games and games maybe they cannot bring to their digital platform. As I've mentioned somewhere in this thread, Tekken 3 hasn't ever been re-released, due to the licencing issues around the character Gon, which could indicate that this might be aimed at hitting some core tent-pole games, but also some more obscure ones with licencing issues or otherwise.

I am really annoyed by "licensing issues". Classic games like Turtles in time, Alien v Predator, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Aladin etc. wont see any release in a collection release or retro mini console version. There should be an arcade subscription service with a full library like MAME has.

Licencing issues are a pain, but if they can get the rights to use Gon on this for Tekken 3, then maybe these boxes are a ‘solution’. The problem with digital licences is that they can expire, as the MvC2 (or 3 I don’t remember)stuff did, when the Capcom licence to sell Marvel characters expired, that game and all DLC went offline and you cannot buy it anymore, at all.

Little boxes like this could mean that, for this example, Capcom pay for the Marvel rights on this little box and that’s it. So in theory licenced games could come to the system that have otherwise not been available legally anywhere since the initial launch of that game

Are you sure Gon is in it? It is a rather useless character in my opinion anyways.

Speaking of marvel. I Used to have a Mame purposed PC and of all the arcade games I had, my favourite is X-men: Children of the Atom.

I've no idea, he wasn't included in the shown footage. But even if he wasn't Namco wasn't willing or able to do the work before now as both Tekken and Tekken 2 are available digitally. As a bonus character you'd imagine it wouldn't be much work to remove him and then bundle that into Collectors Editions of Tekken 5, 6 or 7... So I'd imagine he's in the game.

I never realised it was never released digitally. Tekken 3 is still the best in the series in my opinion. But if FF7 , tekken 3 and hopefully MGS, legacy of kain and GT2 are included I will be tempted to buy this one.

MGS has GOT to be included!

Microsoft's response to PS Classic:

You get an idea of how they are trying to throw shade, but the execution was poor. :yuck:

That is incidentally also a response to the Paid Nintendo Switch Online announcement which published shortly before that post. It too has a free albeit limited NES games offer if you subscribed to it.

Compared with the response to the PS Classic, the service gained a huge backslash for numerous obvious reasons.
