My next question is, what is this for? The instruction booklet in the picture above doesn't even mention it.

I can remember my original Playstation had this slot on the back for things such as a Gameshark and then the slim model they later came out with did not. However, I doubt it would be for anything of that nature, which begs the question, what is it really for?

Expansion slot...

Expansion for what though? That's what i'd like to know. It's puzzling how the instruction booklet doesn't even mention it....
It could be for more games? VITA MEMORY CARDS ARE BACK!!! Hahaha

You’d think if the console needed updates you could simply plug it into a pc or PS4 and update it via powered USB

It's a funky gadget but I can buy an original PS for 10-15 euros. Games go for 5, maybe 10 euros, and if you find a bundle of games they're even cheaper.

That seems like a possibility.

I don't forsee that happening, however it would be cool, but how do we know it doesn't already do that though?

Edit:
Alright, so I looked at the reveal trailer again and honestly, if those ports aren't USB ports, I don't know what they are. Which does give me confidence PS3 and PS4 controllers will be supported and I can't imagine why it wouldn't, be a bad move on their part if they didn't in my opinion.

I just hope it performs better, if not it's a total rip off, since emulation is better.

All these devices are for people who don't use emulators, and for people who do, they're collectibles or a more convenient way (for whatever reason) to play at least a handful of games, or more games if you are inclined to tinker with it. I personally don't see much point in criticizing the product(s) for failing to supersede a practice with inherent advantages (least of all that licensing is a non-issue for your illegal ROM/ISO library) that is also still relatively unknown even after 20-odd years.

The option of a real PSX (or a PS2) is also unhelpful to non-tech-savvy people who have HDTVs that either only accept HDMI, or display analog inputs at a level of quality most people deem unacceptable. And with even more input latency than playing an HD console on the same TV; not that they would notice it, instead blaming themselves for apparently getting rusty at playing old favorites. I suppose a PS3 would be a better option.

If there's any game(s) I'd like to see come to this console, it's Driver and Driver 2 for sure.

One slight correction to the article:

The chief among these is licensing costs. Getting the game’s cars, tracks, and even logos licensed again would be a logistical nightmare. It would also be very expensive and probably not yield a return on investment for Sony.

Original Gran Turismo did not have any real world tracks. Therefore, there are no licensing costs or logistics involved.

I'm sure it could be in the ps classic. The only real issues are music licenses and logos. This is also probably why they havent been on the playstation store too for the psp and ps3.

Gran Turismo 2 does have one, the Laguna Seca. However considering it's last appearance was in GT6 i highly doubt PD loses the license to bring it back to GTS.

On the side note, the last model of the PS1, the PS1 Slim (officially known as PS one) , has the size only half of the dimensions of the fat PS1. The size is like that since they had to fit in the disc and its optical device anyways. The device can be much smaller if they wanted to.

Heres the comparison. Interested to also put the new Classic there.

Cash grab. That's my only comment about this whole thing.
I would think even Nintendo intend to this also. Its a response to those 99999 Games in 1 Chinese bootlegs that usually contains Unlicensed Nintendo games.

Nintendo releases the mini console thing to capitalise it while having an advantage for being official.

The PS Classic is a very neat idea, but personally i just dont have the time to play all these old games again. Too many new titles to spend your time with. This is the reason why i refused to buy NES and SNES classic as well. Not all of these games have aged well. But it will be a huge hit for sure.

I hope it is a SD card slot.

That's hardly it's biggest issue. It's powered by USB. Plug it into the USB slot on your TV to power it, or power it with any of the USB plugs that you're bound to have acquired by this stage of your life.
I have have my (my fiances actually) the Mini Super Nintendo thing plugged into my PS4 to power it

I agree with Castrol 96 no plug is an issue having to find a usb port to power this is just a pain . My usb ports are already all full powering all maner of stuff like hdmi to rca HDMI splitters etc.

I've preordered.

If it's hackable the same as the Nintendo minis are/were, it will end up with GT 1&2 on it. Well, mine will anyway.

& Colin McRae 1&2, DD 1&2, RR 1& Revolution, and WipeOut 2097....

If only someone invented some kind of device that allowed you to plug a USB cord into a wall outlet. 💡

Seriously, if you don't have a spare USB charger laying around, chances are you know someone that does.

I want to believe there will an option to have higher resolution and texture mapping.

If any GT, only the first one is viable. Getting licences for the second game is much harder. (more cars)

But Sony already sold something that is hackable, originally cost the same (and probably are virtually worthless now too) and already has access to the PS Store and at least the majority of the PSX games on it.

Why buy this on that theoretical premise?
