Yep. And the Soviet Union had about 25,000.

Between the two belligerent nations, we had enough radioactive firepower to eliminate all life on this planet, with the possible exception of a few minor insect species. The story was that they could possibly survive the intense radiation that would blanket the world and "inherit the Earth".

It was known as "the arms race" phase of "the Cold War", and was the most dangerous time in human history.

They don't mention this in school anymore? I think I was in fifth grade when I learned that we had the ability to bomb every major city on Earth about 100 times.

I guess it just isn't the same kind of issue as it was back then (16 or 17 years ago).
