Pokémon Games Discussion Thread (Gotta Discuss 'Em All!)

While the ideas are still rumors, the names of the games are semi-confirmed as they were registered domains by Nintendo in the last day or so. Assuming that it's for the Switch titles.
They do that every gen regardless of if the title ever gets used but it is reasonable as sort of proof.

Apparently "shocking" Pokemon news will be announced on May 31st on a Japanese morning variety show called Oha Suta... it airs ~7 am their time, which I think puts the annoucement at ~5 PM on May 30th for me.

I'm thinking they're going to be pulling back the curtains on Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee. Pikachu most definitely likes to shock, and Eevee can shock if you evolve it right. :P

We rarely see Pokemon news announced live on these shows too so there's a good chance we might get a Direct announcement before then!

These games apparently are being treated as spin-offs rather than core games, despite the fact that they're remakes of core games. Some quirky gameplay decisions such as the fact that you only catch wild Pokemon rather than battle them, no online functionality, etc. But fortunately these aren't the actual core Switch game that was previously announced, that will be coming in 2019... So I'm fine with Let's Go's quirky design decisions and think it'll a neat way to revisit Kanto.

Hmmm, a little bit disappointing that we're not getting to battle Pokemon and only catch them. Are we sure about that?
Yes it has been confirmed, but it only applies to wild Pokemon. Trainer battles will still be a thing, and so far appears to be unadulterated... though the game does seem like it's trying to recapture Gen 1's purity, so I wouldn't be surprised if held items weren't a thing. Maybe Special won't be split into Atk/Def either, but that seems like it'd be more work than it'd be worth so I doubt it.

Personally I'm not too annoyed about it. A weird change that I certainly wouldn't like to become standard for Pokemon games going forward, but battling wild Pokemon has never been a particularly integral part of the games for me.

It's always been integral to my play style so I'll have to wait and see how this turns out. After all I will have to buy a Switch to go with it!

I would imagine VGC is probably a source of reason as to why these games aren't full fledged battlers and only spin-offs. As opposed to the old school fun from Colosseum and what not.

Speaking of, I love how Colosseum was designed around some incredibly brutal doubles strategies.

Colosseum and XD are the reason my Gamecube is still plugged into my TV.

Nintendo tree house E3 Pokémon.

My sister has a Switch and she plans on buying the game sooner, too. I'm not just sure which of the two.

If ever I'm buying a Switch next year and I hear out that both are good games, maybe I'll go for Shield.

By the way, gosh I didn't even notice I bumped into an old thread which is inactive for more than a year already.

Who's buying Pokemon Shield and Sword for the Switch once it comes out next month?

I won't be. Definitely not at launch (I never do) but I'm not sure if I will at all.

No National Dex (yes, I care) and "regional variants" have always smacked of complete and utter laziness to me but the biggest thing for me is that I'm a little too fed up with the ZOMG! battle gimmick each gen seemingly must have now; Gen VI was Mega Evolution, Gen VII was Z-Moves and Gen VIII is this Dynomax thing.

Firstly, a new gimmick every gen is tiresome in itself. It is boring to have to adapt to something new and OP. Secondly, why should I get invested in it when the gimmick will be discarded next generation anyway? I took this approach with Z-Moves after realising that Mega Evolution was only temporary.

You could even argue that Gen V's battle gimmick was the gems; Emolga Flying Gem Acrobatics.

Well, those are subjective, I guess. Me though, I didn't become familiar with the series anymore after Gen IV but I'd love to learn more about certain features added since then. However, if there's something I don't like with the new generation here, it's that designs of several new Pokemon look comical and lame compared to the past generations. So that's something I also consider.

Oh, and I'm also sad there's hasn't been any Pokemon yet with the combination of my two favorite types, which is Ground and Fighting but it looks like there's no hope for it to be true anymore.

Agreed on the National Dex thing. That is an essential part of the post game for me.

I liked gems and mega's - and that they are mutually exclusive and can work together in the same team. Never did pay that much attention to the Z moves. The new one seems to be for the raid/open part of the game. I just wish they didn't throw away what worked in previous games.

So the same person who leaked every Galarian evolution has leaked the list of returning Pokémon from previous generations.

From this leak, it seems that we’ll be seeing less than half of the previous roster of Pokémon. Charizard is the only starter line returning as well.

Ah, Mudsdale is back. My de facto team captain and indestructible wall from Sun/Moon. I guess Galar isn't gonna be much of a challenge then...

I never use Pokémon I've used before in any new game so my first playthrough will not be affected but there are a large number of theme team favourites that have bitten the dust. :banghead:

I won't say it's for certain either way, but given that Nintendo has surprised us with adding things into Smash Ultimate that we thought were gone, they could in theory surprise us with some patches or DLC later.

And yeah, I know the Internet would be furious over the thought of something like a National Dex DLC, but when you have 800+ of these critters to make models for and rebalance the movesets of, you need to showcase the new ones and and at least half of the older ones are redundant to the new ones or just mediocre, then I get why some hard choices had to be made. Not saying I like it, mind you, but I understand it.

Pokemon is developed by Game Freak, not Nintendo.

But lets hope their corporate culture is changing ala Polyphony Digital.

No Parasect
No Venomoth
No Victreebel
No Tentacruel
No Ariados
No Forretress
No Kingdra
No Cacturne
No Aggron
No Masquerain
No Dustox
No Relicanth
No Klefki
No Palosand
No Fossils

So many of my favourites have been cut.

No Venusaur
No Meganium
No Typhlosion
No Sceptile
No Empoleon
No Serperior
No Delphox

But yeah, let's have the most overhyped and overrated starter of all time.

And without mega Y to make it useful to me. I bet it can learn Earth Power now as well. The one move that would perfect a Y build which you couldn't do when you can make it a Y.

In other words, Pokemon games aren't as intriguing anymore as they were back then. I think I have the same feeling, too. In this case, I would cling to the older titles because they're fun to play as well once I'm disappointed with the latest one.

I maintain that the franchise has been on a downward spiral since Black/White.
Black/White only used half the map if I remember. It took Black/White 2 to use it all. 6 more days until I get a Shield.
