Pokémon Games Discussion Thread (Gotta Discuss 'Em All!)

To be fair, the technical requirements for the "Pokemon Ultimate" that everyone wants would likely require far more development resources than Game Freak can commit to. Also, putting all of them in one game would remove any reason to buy a new game later.

To be less fair, saying "put all your pokeys in this app and wish really hard that you can use them in the distant future before we end support for said app" is absolutely silly. If Game Freak had said they were doing a soft reboot of the series to take advantage of new mechanics that were introduced previously and maybe to tailor it more to people new to the games, it'd feel a lot less tone deaf on their part.

I have also read that exp share is basically permanently on now; all Pokemon in a party now receive experience and there is no option to turn it off.

Uh... hand holding much? Might as well bring back Alola's max revives for taking two consecutive steps.

The exp share is always on. Pokemon gain more exp if they participate in the battle and the amount varies with the level. While, it would be nice if it was option. It's really not that bad. Plus, you can access the PC from pretty much anywhere, so you can swap out Pokemon you don't want to get over leveled.

Prepped for this week with a new hardware purchase. :D

Also, theoretically I love the idea of a limited Pokedex (despite my whole team literally being ripped from the game), if it forces people to utilise new pokemon and different ones than they’d usually resort to. It’s a huge shock (not unlike a certain GT Sport) to remove legacy content but longer term this may help GF focus on more elements that matter.

I've never understood the dislike of exp share. Only the Pokémon doing the fight get the full exp. The others get a lower proportion and never level up as quick as the Pokémon that does the battling.

Do people really want to grind each team member individually?

Git. Is there a cure for turning brilliant Envy green off?

It's too easy to get seriously overlevelled with the exp share, especially since XY and ORAS.

It isn't necessarily about grinding each individual team member but using each team member in a battle has a more organic experience growth. If the NPCs have 3-4 Pokemon, it's not unreasonable to use 2-3 of your own. Otherwise you might as well only use your starter, certainly for the first half of a game, because their stats are just better and everyone else will grow without you actually using them; if you started with a Torchic in ORAS with exp share on from the start you could easily get to Norman, the fifth badge, having never used any other Pokemon even if you were up against Team Aqua.

As with a lot of unpopular decisions by game developers, it's taking away the option to turn it off that is the problem. If people want to use it, sure, I have used it at times of course I have, but let people have the choice to play the game their way. You're taking away a gameplay option that has existed for over 20 years.

I thought the SW/SH Switch Lite looked great in renders but wow

This is something I am definitely okay with. Catching a new Pokemon and then realizing I have to go schlepping aaaaaall the way back to town to put it in the team and start using it is something that won't be missed.

Oh dear. They've removed a bunch of moves from the game, most are Z moves, but some of them are useful. Additionally it looks like there is no GTS either.

...this is bad.

Looks like they've done a lot of scrimping there. But it won't be found out nor confirmed without actually playing it first. Only less than five days remain before its release to the stores.

A lot of this is confirmed. There's a few people out there that have been streaming the game early, and the game has been dumped in its entirety.

Then that only suggests that it isn't worth buying for its price. And obviously, the future reception and reviews of the game won't be that good.

Have seen it coming for some time now, but Pokemon has finally hit the wall. What a desecration this is.
It is what happens when you have to make a new game every year due to linking to movies and TV shows and your team isn't big enough to get it done on a home console.

Using Gen VI models in a Gen VIII game on superior hardware is the Pokemon equivalent of using GT3's Suzuki Alto Works in GT5.

Game Freak has had its PD moment.

>Deleting half of the established universe ostensibly to focus and make the game better
>The game is terrible anyway

That reason alone isn't exactly what makes the current gen Pokemon sucks, though. I couldn't imagine the devs redo the models all over again for hundreds of Pokemons. Plus the established model that they copied isn't exactly terrible like GT3 era Alto Works you mentioned.

With that being said, the removal of more than half of the mons while (lyingly) telling that its for better models and animations (then backtrack and says that its for "competitive") seals the deal for most people.

And then the list of problems goes on and on.

And did you know that you can't set the sound settings unless you obtain a certain item from an NPC? I'm not even kidding.

Now, awaiting a Crowbcat video.

Having any kind of basic setting behind an unlockable is downright ILLEGAL in the gaming development world. WTF were they thinking?

IGN: The best Pokémon game I've ever played, and I've played them all"

9.3

Now, I can't judge that much considering I haven't played the game, but considering how many issues have been documented...really? The best Pokémon game?

Gamexplain also gives it a "liked" rating.

Same outlet and reviewer that bashed Little Town Hero by giving "avoid" rating, Game Freaks actual pet project.

I can't believe people are actually giving the game good reviews and saying "hopefully they make something even better next time" in the same video. We should not have to wait for the next game in order to get a quality product.

So Gamefreak rushes the development of two games this year and they both turn out to be colossal messes. It's unreal.

Reused models, awful animations, poor textures, barren areas, the list goes on. Pokémon Battle Revolution looks better than Sw/Sh and that was a Wii game from 2006, and it was trash.

Learn from Polyphony Digital. If you remove most of your content, the crap that's left better be the most polished thing I've seen this side of someone's waxed bald head. It wasn't, so I'm done.

A good time to remind everyone that they reviewed ORAS - which, for my money, was the last truly great main series game - a 7.8 for "Too much water".
