I'd say the heftiness of the penalty is more to do with the fact that he blogs about secularism. Had he walked into a mosque (unless it's in Chechnya), a synagogue or a non-Orthodox church, I'd assume he wouldn't be subjected to nearly as harsh a sentence.

I know they try to restoring religious things that eroded from Soviet Union. But this is ridiculous.
