Today at Queensland Raceway, racing driver and son of F1 driver Guy Edwards died whist being a passenger in a Porsche.

Edwards, 26, who was living in Monaco, was the passenger in a Porsche when it hit a wall at Willowbank's Queensland Raceway.

The Porsche driver is the son of F1 race car driver Guy Edwards and recently coached drivers on the film set of Rush. He also played his father in some scenes, including the climactic scene in which he saved German Niki Lauda in a fiery crash.

On October 8, Edwards told his Twitter fans he would soon be arriving in Brisbane for two days of coaching. ``Time to hit Queensland Raceway today, should be fun, hope there aren't too many kangaroos like at Bathurst!'' he wrote on October 12.

On his Facebook page he wrote: ``First time to Aus, have heard great thing so looking forward to my two days there!''

Edwards said he was due to leave Australia today.

Queensland Raceway chief executive John Tetley confirmed Edwards, a passenger in the car, had died in the crash.

Earlier, it was reported the 20-year-old driver's family watched as his car slammed into a wall and burst into flames, killing the passenger, at a Willowbank raceway.

The driver was critically injured after his Porsche crashed into a wall and caught fire at the Queensland Raceway, near Ipswich, this morning.

The male passenger, aged 26, died in the crash. The driver's family was reportedly in the grandstand at the time and watched the crash.

This isn't the sort of news I wanted to wake up to. It's even worse that he wasn't driving at the time...

Motorsports is a tough sport to love sometimes.

It's not been a good week or so for motorsport :guilty:

Sean Edwards was certainly in the 'ones to watch' category of up and coming drivers.

Man, another tragedy :(, why is this keep happening ...

The Porsche must have hit the wall at very high speed, it crumpled so bad, half of the front gone ... every race cars should have autonomous fire extinguisher that operates when there's fire in the fuel system, electrical or engine system.

RIP. Was it a personal or drive car?
The article says the drivers car but, another says a green and white Porsche. May explain why there were no extinguisher.

It's a company car that gives joyride at the track :

It's green and black Porsche, not sure of how much it was modified, it seems to be a race prepped car or a track day car at least.

Shocked to hear that this morning. :(

It would be nice if he could still take the title.

Sad to see this, he won the Nurburgring 24 this year too.

I also remember something.

Back in 1981, Guy Edwards and Emilio de Villota co-drove this Lola that year.
It's ironic both lost a child within a week of each other this year.

Such tragic news and completely unexpected.. He was easily one of my current favourite drivers.. Such a shame. RIP :(

I honestly don't feel like doing anything now.. I didn't know Sean at all, but when somebody dies way too young, especially while doing something they love is heartbreaking.. Poor guy. On a positive note I hope the driver pulls through alright, last we heard he was in critical condition..

I saw that on Jalopnik and that blew my mind but not in a good way. It's insane to think that two drivers who co-drove the same car 32 years ago could both lose a child in the space of a week due to injures from crashes in race cars. :scared: 2013 has been quite a dark year for racing in my honest opinion. R.I.P :(

That's an incredibly eerie and sad coincidence. My condolences to both parents.

I guess this part of why we love our fellow drivers so much. In this tough and crazy world of motorsport, they can be taken in the blink of an eye.

This year alone has been pretty tormenting.

Read the Chris Harris article linked above ... I'm so sad now .... a bright future ahead ... now it's nothing but a memory, RIP ....
