So there I was minding my own business watching yet another Hot Version episode on the Tube of You. Then on came this insert about Keiichi Tsuchiya and his amazing AE86. You know, everything that that car is, and that makes that car great was not created in a day ...or a year. It evolved over decade! Every year the dude would improve the car by just that 10% ...the 10% that onlookers who see the car from year to year struggle to notice. Over decades those 10% hits became huge and yes, soon the car was double as good as it ever was when he got it originally. But every 10% was gained with effort and sometimes tears but this relationship between man and machine continued year after year until the man got his 1:04 car at Tsukuba. But it is not over yet - the man still has plans. Listening to him and watching the sparkle in his eye as he talks about the car, you very much get the feeling that for as long as Keiichi Tsuchiya has his AE86, everything is alright in his world.

I was deeply inspired and immediately decided my '73 Beetle and '97 Z3 were now complete and that I was going to go out and look for the machine that would be by my side for the next 20 or more years. This was to be the one that I will drive last before giving up driving and retiring to some sunny location with no tracks or attractive roads nearby. Unfortunately my country does not have the AE86 and so I had to look elsewhere. This is what I bought:

It is a 1983 Alfa Romeo GTV6 2.5 and the smile on my face could not be bigger!

As you can see from the area around the badges, it needs some restorative work. I am taking it in for fresh paint all around in its current silver. Next will be some interior work. Then the suspension ...I am hoping for an adjustable damper system with shortened harder springs. My template is the following:

I have given myself 2 years for the initial restorative work and mild mods ...given that I really will have to search hard for items like the similar but lower 3.0 front bumper (as pictured above). The only things on that red GTV6 that I will not copy is the color coding of the black trim on the front and rear bumper, as well as the color coding of the trim on the body. It looks good but is a little too modern a touch for my liking. I want the thing to keep looking Vintage! Oh ..and those Recaro seats ..no thanks to those on my car ...I am hoping for vintage racing buckets. One way or the other, if this thing can match the vision in my head, or even the red car above, well, then things are about to be real good around here ...:D
You have no idea how unbelievably jealous I am right now.

Hi again guys. I just finished cleaning up the Z3 and I wanted to ask for some advice. The gap at the rear between the outer edge of the rear fender and the wheel is huge in my eyes ..

I do not necessarily want it flush, but I want it to resemble the front at the very least:

What is the recommended method? Use an appropriately sized spacer? Or get new wheels with a greater offset at the rear? I do not like the idea of the spacers as it seems to me you are adding more weight in the rear ...in a RWD car that already likes to slide . And the new wheels ...well, I would happily avoid putting more money into this car and would rather put it in that GTV6. But I like the idea of the potential greater grip that larger offset rears might bring. What do you guys think? Would the spacers at the rear give more grip for less cost?

Washed it up yesterday and took it out for my first real drive. Man that 2.5 motor ...it is so hard to believe that we are talking 1983 here. And the double plate clutch ...sheesh, this car will make a proper driver and man out me yet!

The owner re-upholstered the seats at some point. It is one thing I do not have to worry about for the next 20 years ...

I cleaned my car today.
What is the preferred method of posting pix these days?
I'm sure there's an easy way that I have no clue about. They're on the iPad I'm posting this from, help anyone?

Thanx

Here is my second project car which will become my daily driver when im 17 and can legally drive
it is a 1970 reliant scimitar se5 and mine is apparently a 'special' one with chrome trim and a different dash
it is 1 of about 20 special cars built from 1970
it has a 3ltr ford Essex v6,a 4 speed with overdrive and rear wheel drive

lastly, when I get round to painting it starsky and hutch or race car?

Looking to buy one of these myself. I wouldn't want to daily one though, insurance will most likely be eye watering to begin with (as you'll have no NCB), as will the fuel bills.

You could easily git 10mm spacers in there, maybe even 15mm. Check OEM offsets and you wheel offset and how much gap there is between the fender and the tire/wheel. It seems the correct low offset is used for the front but not low enough in the rear. Spacers should fix that right up, make sure to get hubcentric ones with extended bolts. Spacers add very little weight and it is all at the wheel hub so don't worrry about that. A lower offset/spacers will not give you much more grip, I'd recommend wider wheels/tires and stickier tires. The spacers will make it look very nice though, rally like those wheels on the car.

Thanks motortrend. I hate to say it but I will have to go with the wider wheels/tires and stickier tyres. The spacer idea just does not sit too well with me. I have decided to leave the GTV6 stock for at least a year as it is a great car. It only needs a minor paint touch-up so I am going to save a lot of money there. I will put a bit into the Z3. I will post pics when it is done. I suspect the E46 M3 CSL Wheels which are Narrow/Wides will solve my problem and will look nicer ...

I figured it was time to post some new pictures of the car again - during last Sundays Forza Horizon 2 in real life ;)

Yes very stable and with the 570rwhp n/a LS7 it is also very fast.

I have removed the carbon Gurney flap off the wing as it added just enough extra down force to make the nose a little twitchy. Aero is all a balancing act.

I had opened the front radiator intake area by a 1/2 inch to allow extra cooling - that allowed more air to flow over the front under tray slightly offsetting the air flow under it - add that the to the new Gurney flap and balance was upset.

Those photos where taken on the outbound leg - halfway through the day I removed the Gurney flap with some fishing line.

Hey guys - new member. I drive a 2012 Mazdaspeed3, fully bolted and I swapped out the factory K04 for a GTX2867r. Currently tuning with a mix of 93 octane and e85 at 24psi - pushing close to 340 whp. My goal is 380s.

1st turbo pic is the K04, 2nd is the GTX.
