How about a bit of history... (I'm going to really date myself here)
(Circa 1996)
Car: 1991 VW Golf II GTI Bought new in 1991 (my first 'new' car purchase). This car was driven up and down the East Coast, from Quebec Canada to the Florida Keys, criss-crossed the country to California and back, from the southern rim of the Grand Canyon to frigid, sub zero F* upstate NY winters to insane 120*F Palm Springs summers, even down into Mexico. I had it shipped when I moved back to Switzerland in 1996 and drove all throughout western Europe, Belgium, France, Holland, Germany, Italy, Austria, into the entrance of the Nurburgring (twice) but never driven ON the track (just bad timing), it even sat outside the gates of Monza during the 1996 Italian Grand Prix. The car looks very basic in this picture but while living in California I had upgraded to Corrado discs, calipers, master cylinder, changed the cams, cylinder head, exhaust, Spax suspension, Neuspeed sway bars, bushings, etc. blah, blah, blah. All the things one could do to a Golf II GTI. By the time The Fast and the Furious came out, I had already been there, done that. LOL The car was finally stolen from a locked parking lot at work in Irvington NJ in the summer of 1998 and found 2 days later in Newark, completely stripped out. I was just as gutted as the car. The bums even took my Momo steering wheel. But at that point, the car had about 130,000 miles on it and it was getting a bit tired and it was almost 8 years old. This was actually my 2nd GTI, the first being a used 1987 16V. Time to move on.
(circa 1999)
Car: 1998 Audi A4 2.8M Quattro. This is the car that replaced the GTI. It was my first "expensive" car purchase. I loved the thing. And I felt like I was moving up in the world. The tuner days were behind me. Or so I thought. I even had the 'sport' seats--a special order item and I waited 3 months for the car BTO. I did my first autocross and TSD rally in the car. And it was great for the first 3 years but at the 65K mark it suffered some serious engine problems which cost me thousands of dollars to repair and the Audi dealer and Audi NA just sat there and shrugged even though it was only a few thousand miles out of warranty. I dumped it soon after. I simply didn't trust it anymore.
(circa 2003)
Car: 2000 Mazda MX-5. I leased this car for 3 & 1/2 years. I always liked Miatas and my wife and I rented one on a trip out to California about a year before this. On a whim, I stopped in at a used car lot, in Oct of 2001. Just shortly after the events of 9/11 they were desperate to make deals, convertible or otherwise, and I got this car for something crazy like $169/month with nothing down. I'm pretty well traveled and in the summer of 2003 my wife and I took a 10 day road trip through New England, no particular destination--just winding our way through the back roads of Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, etc., top down almost the entire way, stopping whenever and where ever we felt, from Acadia National Park to Lime Rock Park--one of the best vacations I ever took. On one particular night, up in the White Mountains, I was just cruising down some back roads, not driving particularly fast, but I was the only car on the road and the Miata just seemed to be flowing from apex to apex in a sublime and mesmerizing way. The smell of pine trees was just floating in the air and the stars were out and shining so brightly it was like you could reach up and burn your finger tips on them. It's a memory that will stay with me forever. As will this car. I would have bought it when the lease was up but we were on our way to starting a family.
(circa 2003)
Car: 2002 Mini Cooper S. I traded in the Audi for this car. NO regrets. I put down an early deposit and had it on order for almost 6 months and it was one of the first lot of Cooper S delivered in the North East. I know I wasn't THE first but probably one of the first few hundred to own one in the US. I drove this car for almost 9 years and 135,000 miles, maybe a bit longer than I wanted but we were in the middle of a recession. Lucky for me, the car was actually very reliable. Go figure. At least for the first 100,000 miles. After that it was a series of ongoing problems: bad water pump here, leaking radiator there, ac compressor there, although nothing really major. And still on the original clutch. I did my first track day (in the US) with this car back in 2003. If I think back and close my eyes, I can still hear the engine wind out and the supercharger wind up. And it still brings a smile to my face. I think this body style looks better than anything Mini has done since. In a way I kind of regret selling it but it was my daily transportation and I started to worry that something serious would eventually happen and I didn't want to pump big money into it. And of all the ridiculous things, my door hinges were starting to rust. I had NEVER had a car with rust on it. Well, actually I did, the 1976 Volvo 244 DL I had in College in 1989. That thing was a total rust bucket. But the Mini was well looked after, waxed and garaged. Outrageous. Time to go.
(Circa 2012)
Car: 2011 Mazdaspeed 3. As we crawled out of the recession, I realized I needed to replace the Mini with something more reliable. I went to test drive a lot of cars. At this point, my daily commute was almost 100 miles round trip and after looking at and test driving almost everything from a BMW 1 series to a Honda Civic Si I realized that (a) I just didn't want to spend a lot of money on a car that would likely have 100,000 miles in about 4 years and (b) I really just didn't like a lot of what I went to test drive. Especially coming out of the Mini, (a curse) everything was too big, or too heavy or too complex or too soft. I settled on the MS3. It had gobs of power. Over 300 hp when I was done with it. And the engine was so torquey. On the highway at 60 mph or more, you didn't even have to downshift out of 6th gear. You hit the gas. There was about .5 of second of turbo lag and then *wooooosh*. And it was pretty much faster than 95% of the cars on the road. Tons of mid range. But after 5,500 rpm it ran out of breath. And the torque steer was like a Bo-flex work out. It was competent. And fun. But I never really loved the car.
These weren't all my cars but it's a nice little walk back through time.
