That’s a rather unfair comparison, both SMS and Kunos are independent developers with limited funds while PD are part of Sony. Game development is getting more and more complex, time consuming and expensive with each generation, and smaller developers are actually relying on DLC income nowadays. It's funny how the "season pass" mentality has affected all of us.
Don't get me wrong, I have PC2 + season pass and I have AC + season pass + remaining DLCs that weren't included in the season pass.
BUT, recently GTS re-opened my eyes that we don't need to do that to get good content, or we shouldn't do that at all actually. But we've been spoiled and manipulated to think otherwise.
For my PS4 I paid:
-35$ for AC+SP when it was on sale. I then paid 9+9 for the latest 2 DLC packs. That's 53$ in total.
-60$ for base PC2 + 25$ for its SP. That's 85$ in total.
-28$ for GTS when it was on sale.
GTS has got like maybe 10 updates since launch?! Got tons of bugs fixed; added like maybe 5 new real tracks and other virtual tracks? added TONS of new cars, lots of single player content, ALL FOR FREE.
==> I know, some would argue that the game was pretty weak on content and that those should have been in the game in the first place, but that's not totally also true. They could have charged for some tracks or cars at least, but they didn't.
==> And some would argue that it's not a real full sim (but who is actually entitled to verify that?!), but it still has the BEST online multiplayer racing and the BEST automatic matchmaking system, the best scapes and livery editor (if not the only livery editor), great single player content in my opinion (driving lessons anyday over racing against AI), and the BEST graphics. It has lots of stuff going for it.
Yes I don't play GTS as much as I play PC2 or AC, but I think it has affected me in a good way and made me rethink some of my past decisions and consider better future ones.
Polyphony Digital in comparison has seemingly unlimited funding, plus it’s a system seller/halo game for Sony. They can justify handing out content for free, as the end goal is to have a strong brand and sell Playstations.
