I haven't suggested any road cars because to me this game is about the race cars or race versions of road cars and I am pretty sure they will have added in some of the latest hyper cars and track day cars. It would definitely improve the game if the road cars were available with a set of liveries with race numbers on - at the moment if I choose to race in a road car - it's like being in a track day, not a race because the cars have no numbers.
I've tried to suggest as few cars as possible, focussing first on expanding the number of cars in specific classes which currently only have a small number as this has been a common complaint amongst players. I've also tried to ensure that any suggestions are significantly different from cars currently in the game whether from configuration and sound or shape. I assumed that the game developers are constrained by licensing issues and looked for some work rounds to the problem. Finally I looked at the race record, number produced (likelihood of different liveries), longevity of use and the historical significance of any suggestions.
I am assuming that for license reasons PC2 is restricted to classic Lotus and also cannot have any direct Formula One competitors to the Lotus 49 and 72. The 1970 Lotus 70 Formula 5000 / Formula A would be ideal to compete with both those cars, the 5 litre V8 having a deep bass rumble to contrast nicely with the scream of the 3 litre cars. F5000 and F1 used to race together in non-championship races such as the Brands hatch "Race of Champions" and the premier domestic championships of the USA, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa used to run to F5000 rules.
Above - red number 4 is chassis 1 of 9 and was raced in period by Mario Andretti and tested by Emerson Fittipaldi. Engine was fuel injected Boss 302 Ford (currently on carbs). Number 12 raced by Wintersteen in 1975 with injected 5 litre Chevrolet.
For me the most successful car in PC1 in terms of driving feel on default settings for car and wheel is the Group A BMW E30 M3. There are only 3 cars currently in the Group A category. I thought long and hard about possible competition from the period - by the end of their development the Sierra Cosworth and BMW M3 were dominant, filling virtually all the grid slots. But what about the Holden Commodore 5.0 V8 which raced in the BTCC and the ETCC also the Nissan GTS-R which raced in the ETCC and Australia against the Sierra?
The addition of these two cars would add some variety to the current Group A field in terms of shape, size, sound and configuration.
The Aston Martin DBR1/300 is one of the most enjoyable cars in PC1 - not too fast, but with interesting and challenging road manners - in fact I love it so much that I am currently running a championship for it, but the problem is that it is just one car. I looked at the entry lists and results for Le Mans and came up with this two class field to go with the Aston. Note - I have tried to select cars as rivals which combine longevity of use with different looks and characteristics so among the four fastest cars in the group we have three engine configurations - straight 6, straight 8 and V12 and three braking systems - discs (Jaguar and Aston), drums (Ferrari) and drums with air (Mercedes used a large air brake to shed speed before applying their drums, which would look spectacular in the game). We also have radically different looks with the Jaguar having an asymmetrically mounted sharks fin behind the driver, the Mercedes having a large airbrake and an offset air intake, the Ferrari having a pontoon style front and four megaphone tipped exhausts exiting the rear.
Above - The Cunningham Team won the GT category in 1960 with the number 3 Rochester fuel injected 4.6 litre Corvette - amazingly because of the low value of race cars in those days, after the race the cars were shipped back to the USA stripped of race parts and sold as low mileage second hand road cars.
Group 5 - currently we have just two "turbo monsters" - I propose adding the Group 5 Lancia Beta Monte Carlo.
I also propose adding the Ford Capri, BMW Batmobile, De Tomaso Pantera and Porsche 911 Carrera RSR - the new multi-class option in PC2 should enable these cars to race together with the Group 5 cars and Group 4 car (BMW M1). The BMW Batmobile would be added in Group 5 spec and the Capri in its top (Cologne) spec with 470bhp 3.4 litre V6 Ford Cosworth GAA engine with the Pantera being in Group 4 (wide arch) spec. The Chevrolet Corvette C3 L88 7 litre would also be added as this was a fixture at Le Mans for many years in a range of great liveries from the red of Scuderia Flipinetti to the stars and stripes of the Greenwood Team. Finally in this group - the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 which enjoyed longevity and great success at Le Mans coming 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th overall in 1972.
Above - this selection gives players the option of Porsche 917 v its natural competitor the Ferrari 512 in the S5.0 class (plus also the option of the Lola T70 MK3B) OR Matra v Ferrari in the 3 litre prototype class.
The Sauber C9 is on its own in PC1 so would be joined by the Jaguar XJR9.
The Lotus 40 is in a class of one on PC1 - designed before the Group 7 sports car rules were drafted for Can Am and European Interserie so I have suggested that it be partnered with its main competitors from 1965. NB the 40 was probably the worst of these cars - works driver Richie Ginther describing it as like the Lotus 30, but with 10 more mistakes!
I presume that licensing issues relating to "Can Am" are avoided by selecting cars from 1965 before the Canadian American Challenge Series was formed.
Above Lola T70 Spyders - John Surtees won the inaugural Can Am title in 1966 driving a Lola T70 Chevrolet. Below as it was designed to comply with an earlier ruleset than Group 7 the McLaren M1A had to carry a spare tyre - the only place with room was between the steering wheel and screen. The number 5 car was driven by Elvis Presley in 1966 during the making of his film "Spinout". The M1A was normally fitted with the 4.5 litre Oldsmobile or slightly larger Chevrolet engines.
Above Chevrolet powered Chaparral 2A featured many air vents and zoomie style exhausts - presumably in an attempt to reduce heat build up under the body.
Finally I understand that PC2 will bring Rallycross which I am very much looking forward to - the experience would be even better if they included a couple of classic rallycross cars from the golden era when the banned "Group B" rally cars were used for British and European Rallycross - I have many happy memories of seeing fire breathing, whistling and chirping four wheel drive monsters at the Brands Hatch and Lydden Hill rallycross tracks including the following two cars.
Top picture the Will Gollop twin turbo Metro 6R4 eventually produced 870bhp at the peak of its development while the Pat Doran Ford RS200 peaked at 930bhp - can you imagine driving these cars in the game?
I hope you like these suggestions I have tried to focus on making as few suggestions as possible, concentrating on quality rather than quantity and looking first at the categories already in the game which need strengthening.
It would have been easy to have suggested lots of classic saloon cars, but I have avoided these as I am not sure how the cars will feel in the new game - I have concentrated on cars in power and weight categories which currently work well in PC1. Also I would like more GT4 and GT3 cars, but many suggestions for these have already been made.
Late Addition / PS - It would be nice to get more Trans Am race series cars in the game, but again there might be licensing problems. 1970 would be the best year to pick as it was the last year with significant factory support and the widest range of manufacturers - these included Plymouth (Barracuda), Chevrolet (Camaro), Ford (Mustang), Dodge (Challenger) and AMC (Javelin).
Below why I want the Ford Capri (Cologne) with GAA engine in the game!
